"Feel your age" nghĩa là gì?

"Feel one's age" -> nghĩa là nhận ra ngày càng già đi và ít năng lượng hơn.

Ví dụ
If you ask the former World No. 14, he'll tell you he doesn't feel his age.

Rachel, who has run the front of house all those years, is also starting to feel her age.

The Australian actor-and-singer insisted he doesn't feel his age and he's loved the challenge of learning a new skill.

It sounds like you are suffering from a major depression. You are in your 50s and deserve to feel your age, not like you’re in your 70s or 80s. This is understandable, particularly during this pandemic, and it’s time to get professional help — not only for yourself but for the sake of your wife and daughter.

Chỉ có ở Texas

cưỡi bò đến trường trong ngày cuối cùng của năm học... :D
There are just some things you’d probably only expect to see in Texas and a teenage girl riding a cow to school most likely would be one of them.

Kayden Bayer, a 17-year-old junior at Buna High School, and her friend Autumn Burt, planned to ride their horses (ngựa) to school Friday morning to celebrate (kỷ niệm, đón chào) the last day of school.

But Bayer decided she wanted to switch things up so she saddled up her 3-year-old Black Angus heifer, “Velvet,” and rode the 600 pound cow (bò) to school.

...Teens will be teens (trẻ con vẫn là trẻ con), of course, and in at least one photo both Bayer and Burt can be seen using their phones as they ride across a field (cánh đồng) near the school.

Thật quá quắt

con trai dán đồ của bố lên trần nhà, bốn ngày ko tìm thấy đâu :)
It might be one of the most infuriating (làm điên tiết, chọc điên tiết) things in the world when you can’t find what you’re looking for. Why does the remote control (điều khiển từ xa) have such a penchant (xu hướng) for disappearing (biến mất)? (is someone working on a ‘find my remote’ app yet or what?)

Usually, though, we find the elusive (hay lảng tránh)) device wedged behind the sofa cushions, hidden underneath it, or randomly in the bathroom or next to the kettle. One place we might not look, however, is the ceiling (trần nhà).

Understandably, one unfortunate dad didn’t think to look up after four days of constantly losing his stuff.

Reddit poster SeamanTheSailor shared images of some of the items he glued (dính băng keo), including glasses, a phone case, a shoe, and the one to end all the games – the remote.

"Thoughts and prayers" nghĩa là gì?

"Thoughts and prayers" = suy nghĩ và cầu nguyện -> nghĩa là cố an ủi ai vừa trải qua nỗi đau mất mát.

Ví dụ
Stella Parton took to Twitter to express her gratitude for the thoughts and prayers pouring in after the loss of her brother.

The loss of lives in a fire accident at the Serum Institute (Viện Huyết thanh) of India in Pune is distressing. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. I wish speedy recovery of the injured.

In a tweet posted Sunday, the Tommies baseball program said it was "shocked and saddened to hear of (Kelly’s) sudden passing," adding "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family & friends during this difficult time."

LMU’s own President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., managed to offer a call to unity and thoughts and prayers in his statement: "We pray for national unity, an end to violence, & reaffirm our common humanity. As educators in the Jesuit & Marymount traditions, we reconcile (hoà giải) our differences with courage (dũng cảm) & mutual respect. I have faith in our shared democratic values and believe peace & justice will prevail."

"Jaws of Life" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Hush Naidoo on Unsplash

"Jaws of Life" -> nghĩa là dụng cụ đẩy thủy lực để cứu nguời mắc kẹt trong ô tô hoặc dưới các mảnh vỡ; nghĩa khác (hài hước) là khi ai cần thoát ra khỏi tình huống gì.

Ví dụ
A Volkswagen Passat was seen with a smashed (nghiền nát) back window and debris (mảnh vỡ) on it. Hyannis firefighters had to extricate (gỡ) the driver using the Jaws of Life. He did not appear seriously injured but was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation (đánh giá).

She said they tried everything to get him unstuck but eventually had to call the "pawfessionals" at the Columbia Fire Department. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life, rescuing Peanut, which made for a happy ending for Peanut and his new pals.

A local dog — who rescuers have named 'Pickle' — is resting (nghỉ ngơi) comfortably after his head was stuck inside a tire rim (mâm bánh xe ô tô) for five days in Brazoria County, Texas. His rescue took a fast-acting sheriff's deputy, a dedicated team of veterinarians, firefighters and the jaws of life.  It all started Wednesday in the area near the old rodeo arena in Angleton, Texas.

It took firefighters using the Jaws of Life 35 minutes to free one of the victims (nạn nhân) trapped inside the vehicle. Both victims, he said, were wearing seatbelts. They were not immediately identified.

"Mopping-up operation" nghĩa là gì?

"Mopping-up operation" -> nghĩa là giai đoạn giải quyết các công việc còn lại trong một kế hoạch, giai đoạn dọn dẹp.

Ví dụ
"Since then it has been a mopping-up operation. We've got everything out, all the carpets (thảm), and everyone's safe. "I had the added problem of my wife being quite ill, so we had to get her out quickly.

A mopping-up operation is still underway in Machhil sector of frontier (biên giới) district of Kupwara in north Kashmir where four security personnel and three militants were killed in a gunfight on Sunday, said an official today.

After a lengthy mopping-up operation, the umpires (trọng tài) decided that play would resume after an early tea interval (giờ nghỉ), with 52 overs due to be bowled in a mammoth evening session. Abid and Masood edged towards a half-century stand, compiling the highest opening partnership by a touring team this summer in the process, but ended up falling a solitary run short.

Harold Macmillan should be with us at this hour, delivering the line “Events, my dear boy, events”, in a stylishly nonchalant (thờ ơ) drawl (lè nhè). Our leaders always expected 2020 to be a tough year, but they had just won an election fought on getting Brexit done; so they were expecting a mopping-up operation and transitional turbulence, rather than a mega-crisis which has transformed, well, everything.

"Mop the floor with you" nghĩa là gì?

Ăn mừng thôi!!! Photo by Heather Maguire on Unsplash

"Mop the floor with someone" = (cho ai) lau sàn -> nghĩa là dễ dàng hạ gục đối thủ.

Ví dụ
Coach knew that even missing a few key (chủ chốt) players, we could still mop the floor with Moffat, but he wanted to start the season with the entire team together, not fragmented (đứt đoạn).

This is simply a complete mismatch in talent and coaching. Better luck next year to the Cincinnati Bengals, but the Baltimore Ravens will have this team’s number and mop the floor with them. The defense is going to feast (ăn cỗ) and deliver a crucial win for Baltimore.

I’m a 72 year old lady who wouldn’t be afraid to call Jason Miller a deadbeat (ăn bám) dad right to his face. I think I could still mop the floor with him.

“With this Xilinx acquisition (giành được), it’s an absolute beast,” he said. “AMD and Nvidia continue to mop the floor with Intel. Intel is years behind these two companies.”

"All rights reserved" nghĩa là gì?

"All rights reserved" -> nghĩa là câu xác nhận bản quyền của các sản phẩm và cấm mọi hành vi sao chép trái phép, mọi quyền được cấp cho luật bản quyền hiện có và dành riêng cho chủ sở hữu, tác giả.

Ví dụ
I have some theories (giả thuyết) as to why there might be. The photographer may have a default “all rights reserved” and didn’t adjust (điều chỉnh) the copyright to reflect the text. Or the photographer made a later change to the copyright and didn’t update the text. Whatever, it’s unclear.

Leticia Roncero, Community Manager at Flickr, shared the platform's (nền tảng) top 25 images of 2020. Since they are all marked "all rights reserved," here's a great puppy photo from Pexels. It has 13.4 million views and is free to use under Creative Commons (CC0). You'd think of the millions of images uploaded to Flickr this year, maybe one of the best was posted under a Creative Commons license (giấy phép)?

The British Museum in London has mistakenly credited “Her Hakkı Mahfuzdur”, the Turkish term for “all rights reserved”, as Turkey’s largest producer of postcards on its recently relaunched online catalogue.

It’s not uncommon to come across a document, pamphlet (sách mỏng), or other resource with the words “All Rights Reserved” stamped across the bottom. But what do these words mean exactly? What purpose do they serve? Does the author think it’s necessary to use in order to retain (giữ lại) his copyright? Is it intended to prohibit all further uses?

"More power to you!" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Wan San Yip on Unsplash

"More power to you!" -> nghĩa là lời khen hoặc bày tỏ sự ngưỡng mộ tới thành công hoặc hành động dũng cảm.

Ví dụ
As everyone is well aware, Christmas was very different this year. If it was not different for you, you are one of three things: someone who doesn’t celebrate, you are extremely lonely or you are someone who doesn’t take a global pandemic that has killed almost two million people seriously. If you are one of the first two, more power to you. There’s no shame in not celebrating (ăn mừng) and/or being lonely. But if you’re one of the latter (sau cùng), well, then, to quote Joe Biden: “come on, man.”

Yes, working from home absolutely means you don’t have to get all dressed up for the day. In fact, for the first couple weeks of this pandemic I wore basketball shorts and a t-shirt every day, and it was bliss (hạnh phúc)! If you have the luxury of not having to enable video on your laptop for your meeting, great, more power to you.

If you don’t have a Google account or Facebook account and use DuckDuckGo as your search engine, more power to you. Most of us, however, do use some of those free services that harvest (thu hoạch) our data and use it to deliver ads and sell products.

You are free to feel however you choose about the offense. If you pick optimism, great, more power to you. If you choose pessimism (tiêu cực) and worry, I understand that as well.

"His whole world was turned upside down" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jack Gisel on Unsplash

"His whole world was turned upside down" = cả thế giới đảo lộn -> nghĩa là quan điểm, hoàn cảnh hay lối sống của ai bị ảnh hưởng, thay đổi bởi điều gì (thường là tiêu cực).

Ví dụ
In mid-March, my whole world was turned upside-down as I heard the words "shelter in place" for the first time.

Jodie said: "She spent six weeks in intensive care. We saw people come and go, and we did not know if we would every get out. Our whole world was turned upside down."

The heartbroken family of a man killed by a "drug-fuelled dangerous driver" in Nottinghamshire have described how their “whole world was turned upside down” after his death.

Hailey's whole world was turned upside down. Before she got married, she was traveling the globe partying with her fashion pals, like Kendall Jenner and Gigi and Bella Hadid. Now they're all living the high life without her, while she's become a kind of desperate housewife.

"As flash as a rat with a gold tooth" nghĩa là gì?

Đơn giản mà đẹp. Photo by Christian Bolt on Unsplash

"As flash as a rat with a gold tooth" = bóng bẩy như con chuột có răng bằng vàng -> nghĩa là ăn mặc phô trương, lòe loẹt.

Ví dụ
As our family boiled in a beach car park waiting for a spot to be vacated (chỗ trống), I was surprised to learn that the places was not full, but chockers. Dressing for my first day of school, my sisters kindly informed me that being as flash as a rat with a gold tooth did not, in fact, mean that I resembled a rodent.

We cruise regularly and often. We love to mix with cruisers from other overseas (nước ngoài) countries and spruick this lucky country. It is a delight to see their facial expressions when I tell a well-dressed lady that she “looks as flash as a rat with a gold tooth”. Invariably (luôn luôn) they will ask me to repeat it, then they repeat it as they wish to recall it when they get home. Dare to be different.

There are some delightful comic scenes, not least as Harpagon transforms to impress Mariane. He is as flash as a rat with a gold tooth (or a gold lame jacket). Much of the strength of the production lies in Justin Fleming's witty new translation. He has taken a 17th-century French script and translated it into a contemporary Australian vernacular (thổ ngữ).

Looking at a photo of one Adolf Gustave Beutler, whose picture is inscribed with the words ‘wilful and obscene (khiêu dâm) exposure’, I can’t help but think of my grandmother’s beloved idiom for a well-dressed man with a sinister (đọc ác) streak: Beutler is, as many of the fellows are, as flash as a rat with a gold tooth.
