“Status quo bias” nghĩa là gì?

“Status quo bias” = định kiến nguyên trạng -> nghĩa là xu hướng muốn giữ nguyên trạng (mọi thứ như cũ, lựa chọn điều quen thuộc hơn là điều xa lạ (dù có thể có lợi hơn)).

Ví dụ
The challenge is not only the work itself but the difficulty of overcoming inertia and status quo bias, to move consumer behaviour, corporates, or sectors in the direction we wish to go.

Another mistake leaders make is to gravitate to the status quo (sometimes called status quo bias). There is typically more effort required to make change than to continue on the current path. But innovation (sự đổi mới) and acceleration (sự tăng tốc) rarely happen without shifts.

Status-quo bias, this is really just a summary of the previous points. But I cannot possibly emphasize (nhấn mạnh) enough what a mistake it is to privilege (đặc ân) the status-quo in a pandemic (đại dịch). It’s just nuts. Quietly maintaining the status quo in a pandemic kills thousands upon thousands of people, and indirectly harms millions more.

“Regret-aversion bias” nghĩa là gì?

“Regret-aversion bias” = định kiến hối tiếc -> nghĩa là sợ đưa ra quyết định sai lầm (khi ngẫm lại); (ví dụ) sợ không đầu tư vào bất động sản tốt, hoặc mua nhầm tài sản xấu.

Ví dụ
Regret Aversion Bias – Under this, investors are reluctant (lưỡng lự) to sell or lose the investments to avoid confronting (đối đầu) the fact that they have made poor investment decisions.

Most clients will appreciate the DCA's lower risk. All investors are prone to regret aversion and loss aversion biases, or, respectively, the tendency to avoid action out of fear it will turn out badly and to feel losses more strongly than gains. Indeed, the potential for losses is on average twice as powerful a motivator (người thúc đẩy) as the potential for gains.

Sometimes referred to ‘analysis-paralysis’, many investors avoid taking any decision at all for fear of making the wrong decision. Rather than live with the regret of following a particular course of action, some investors err on the side of doing nothing at all. ‘Regret-aversion’ bias, whether an error of omission (bỏ sót) or commission, and ‘herd bias’ often go hand-in-hand where an investor chooses to follow the crowd rather than live with the regret of not doing so.

"Dead set against" = chống lại tới chết -> nghĩa là cực kỳ phản đối; quyết tâm không thực hiện.

Ví dụ
My parents are dead set against me moving to New York to become a singer so I'm trying to get noticed on YouTube.

My wife was dead set against hiring a cleaner once a week but now she wants her to come twice a week to help with the laundry and ironing.

The airlines support testing international travelers, viewing that as a way to eliminate other border barriers and quarantine requirements. However, they are dead-set against testing travelers within the United States, calling it costly and impractical.

Still, the scale of the pandemic aid already in train helps explain why Biden faces a tricky road toward finding a Senate majority for the next bill, even among Republicans who are not dead set against stimulus (kích thích kinh tế) spending conceptually.

"Wave the bloody shirt" nghĩa là gì?

Châm lửa. Photo by Maan Limburg on Unsplash

"Wave the bloody shirt" = vẫy chiếc áo đẫm máu -> nghĩa là cổ vũ cho bạo lực, hận thù. Cụm từ phổ biến trong cuộc Nội chiến Hoa Kỳ.

Ví dụ
Far into the future, Democrats (Đảng Dân chủ) will be able to wave the “bloody shirt” of insurrection at virtually every Republican (Đảng Cộng hòa).

We’ve never cared much for those who wave the bloody shirt and insist that those who’ve never been teachers shouldn’t be making policy.

A lot of people in our country are waving the bloody shirt right now, but I just can't support acts of violence, however justified they may be.

This is an unstable man who is headed to potentially a historic defeat. And I think he's going to wave the bloody shirt and try to scare white voters, and I think they're going to do everything they can to suppress (đàn áp) nonwhite votes.

"Bloody but unbowed" = đổ máu nhưng không cúi đầu -> nghĩa là quyết chí, kiên gan bất chấp căng thẳng hay khó khăn, trở ngại.

We were bloody but unbowed after the board rejected our first proposal—we just resolved to make a better pitch next time.

"I won't turn my back on you now that you're struggling," Cher tweeted. "Your head is bloodied but unbowed," she added.

Train number two took me to Paris Gare du Nord, where I had a brief wrestle with a ticket machine before emerging victorious, bloody but unbowed, with a métro ticket.

The Portsmouth Christian Academy boys basketball team left its gym Monday night, bloodied but unbowed. The piece of gauze (miếng gạc) protruding from one of Bryson Lund’s nostrils in the second half was the most visible evidence of the physical skirmish.

"My bloody oath" nghĩa là gì?

"My bloody oath" = lời thề đẫm máu của tôi -> nghĩa là chắc chắn rồi, hẳn nhiên; nghĩa khác là thán từ thể hiện cảm xúc mãnh liệt, nhiệt tình hay phấn khích.

Does he deserve the Noble Prize? My bloody oath! He’s the only bona-fide (chân chính) genius pop music has ever produced.

"I still work but my bloody oath, struth, I’ll be retiring!." The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased her winning ticket.

I wanted to say: "My bloody oath, I have. I decided how I would vote months ago and I neither need, nor want, to listen to any more campaign bull". I can now focus on more productive matters and keep my fingers crossed that Australia votes for equality, fairness and a sustainable future.

"Take an oath" nghĩa là gì?

"Take an oath" có oath là lời thề -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tuyên thệ.

Ví dụ
The bedrock (nền tảng) principle of our justice system is that people take an oath to tell the truth.

Other federal (thuộc liên bang) officials are required to take an oath as well, though Congress (Quốc hội), not the constitution (hiến pháp), specifies the words.

You know to take an oath is a special thing. To take an oath in front of your friends and family is even more special. Especially knowing how incredible this district is. It’s really neat to be a voice in Washington.

You have to trust the medical community and the incredibly brilliant people who worked night and day to come up with the vaccine as quickly as possible. I understand it’s not an easy decision but doctors take an oath to do right by their patients so I believe they wouldn’t put out a product that they didn’t believe was safe.

"Salt an account" nghĩa là gì?

"Salt an account" có account là số tiền phải trả cho hàng hóa, dịch vụ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là thêm mắm dặm muối, tính giá cao nhất cho các món hàng.

Ví dụ
The low profit framework forces investors to think of ways to salt an account, because if the profit is thin and the market is weak, it is dangerous, the business is ineffective for the businesses themselves.

When submitting projects to the Department of Construction, developers of commercial housing projects often declare low selling prices, but until mobilizing capital to sell houses in the future, they will salt an account the houses.

In many cases, the seller and the buyer have reached an agreement on the price, but when the stake is closed (chốt cọc), the owner no longer sells. They want to salt an account, even though we find that the transaction is close to the market price.

"On the cusp" = trên đỉnh -> nghĩa là ở giai đoạn hoặc tình huống sắp có sự thay đổi.

Ví dụ

We’re on the cusp of a driving revolution. Not only could this tech unlock vast opportunities for the UK economy and jobs market, it could significantly improve the safety and efficiency of how we travel over the coming decades.

This seems a mite (phần nhỏ) premature about a party that represents roughly half the country, and is on the cusp of a majority in the House, tied 50-50 in the Senate, and in control of the governorships in 27 states and both the governorship and state legislature in 22 of those.

"Salt the mine" nghĩa là gi?

"Salt the mine" có salt là rắc thêm muối -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đổ thêm quặng (từ nơi khác) vào mỏ để trông có vẻ lời lãi.

Ví dụ
It turned out that they'd salted the old abandoned mine with low-grade gold deposits to convince us to buy, then skipped town with the money.

Neil Brown, employed by a large Eastern syndicate, is sent west to examine and perhaps purchase a silver mine owned by Fred Harvey. Harvey is advised of the easterner's coming and determines to "salt" the mine to insure the sale.

One way to lure more of those dollars to Milwaukee is to salt the mine. Major companies in Milwaukee could take the lead in forming what is commonly called a "fund of funds," a vehicle for pooling capital and investing in emerging firms.

I hope EU citizens of Asian and African descent (gốc) will not suffer the aftermath (hậu quả) of these provocative (khiêu khích) terrorist (khủng bố) attacks. Many far-right parties (đảng cực hữu), which are the main opposition in European countries, as well as racist media outlets, are endeavoring to legitimize this fascist demand in politics and society. They even overtly salt the books to this end.

His age doesn’t stop him from ruling hearts. He has aged like fine wine and his pictures on social media are proof of it. Have a look at some of R Madhavan's photos where he slew in his salt and pepper look.

Những bác sĩ tài hoa

dùng gần 5 lít bia cứu sống bệnh nhân ngộ độc rượu...
-----
A man dying (gần chết, hấp hối) from alcohol poisoning (ngộ độc rượu) was saved (được cứu sống) after doctors (bác sĩ) in Vietnam pumped (bơm) 15 cans worth of beer into his body.

The 48-year-old, Nguyen Van Nhat, fell unconscious (bất tỉnh) and was taken to a hospital in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Tri on December 25 where doctors found that levels of methanol—a dangerous form of alcohol—in his body were more than 1,000 times over the recommended limit.

When he arrived, medical staff at the General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, led by Dr. Le Van Lam, immediately administered him with three cans of beer, equivalent to about 1 liter. Over the course of the day, doctors transfused a total of 15 cans of beer into the man's body at a rate of about one every hour. This slowed down the rate at which his liver processed the methanol, allowing doctors to save his life.

...There are two types of alcohol—ethanol and methanol—both of which produce similar effects and are toxic to the body to some degree. However, methanol—whose chemical structure (kết cấu hóa học) varies slightly from its close relative—is not processed as well by the liver and thus can be far more dangerous when it is consumed in relatively large quantities.

The alcohol in consumer drinks tends to be mostly ethanol, although beverages such as beer and wine often contain very small amounts of methanol as well because it is a natural byproduct of fermentation (sản phẩm phụ tự nhiên của quá trình lên men). Commercial spirit manufacturers take steps to remove methanol from their products using special technology (công nghệ đặc biệt). However, methanol is often found in bootleg liquor (rượu lậu, quốc lủi), as well as in gasoline, antifreeze, paints, thinners, adhesives, cleaning products and inks.

"Have my guts for garters" nghĩa là gì?

"Have (one's) guts for garters" -> nghĩa là trừng phạt, quở trách, mắng mỏ nặng nề.

Ví dụ
My parents said they'd have my guts for garters if I took the car again without permission.

You’d be damned if you nutmegged (hạ gục) him in training though. You’d have to run fast because if he caught you he’d have your guts for garters.

Some of us still cannot play the cover drive because that is where the backdoor was and, if you broke its glass panels, Mum would have ‘"your guts for garters."

"I consider him a dear friend and as such I know Elaine, his wife, would have my guts for garters if I tried to pressure Doug to stay," Ms Plibersek told reporters in Melbourne.

"Labor of love" nghĩa là gì?

"Labor of love" có labor là lao động -> cụm từ này nghĩa là công việc làm vì tình cảm chứ không vì tiền bạc; như các bạn trẻ hay nói: làm vì đam mê chứ tiền bạc gì.

Ví dụ
Other than cooking and preparing the meals, Muse handles everything from fundraising (gây quỹ) to delivering the meals every Friday to essential workers. She has also offered food to essential workers like first responders, utility workers and grocery store clerks. The Pasadena Food Hug has been her labor of love since it began in August.

The creation of this music was a labor of love. As D’Nur sees it, “Love is the only thing that’s going to carry (gánh vác) us through.”

In telling the story of how the Pike's labor of love came to be, Amy begins by saying her husband's family grew up on the adjoining (gần kề) acreage, and that they planned to build an earth-berm home on the very spot in the early 1970s, but never got around to building it.

DeSorgher said he has checked each name many times, spending hundreds of hours researching and plugging each name into ancestry.com to double-check them. DeSorgher, who is still Medfield’s town historian, said he has always loved researching (nghiên cứu), even though it is time-consuming (tốn thời gian). “It was a labor of love,” he said. “It was just a very interesting project."
