"Bear the sight of" nghĩa là gì?

Chẳng muốn nhìn tới!. Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

"Bear the sight of so/sth" -> nghĩa là chấp nhận, chịu đựng ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
When Masih was asked to identify the bodies, he said that he could not bear the sight of his wife's decomposed (phân hủy) body.

Xiao said that one time her kitten caught a cold and lost its appetite (thèm ăn). Unable to bear the sight of her kitten looking so uncomfortable she took it to the vet for an examination and to get some medicine.

The municipal (thành phố, đô thị, thị xã) government of Ishinomaki decided in March 2016 to preserve the school. But opinions are divided among residents, with some bereaved families saying they cannot bear the sight of the building.

The savage (người tàn bạo dã man), deformed (bị biến dạng) beast that lives within us cannot bear the sight of itself. Our reflexive (phản thân) hatred of the monster within us keeps us locked into an intensely (mãnh liệt) intimate (mật thiết) relationship with Trump.

"Bear testimony to" nghĩa là gì?

"Bear testimony to sth" -> nghĩa là cung cấp bằng chứng, là minh chứng của...

Ví dụ
Her family said she is fun to be with and is a good listener, while her many friends, both old and new, bear testimony to her loyalty and joy in living.

Up until today our rural areas, in particular, bear testimony to the legacy of skewed and unequal development and the weighty task that lies ahead of us.

Tributes from all over the world bear testimony to the deep sense of grief that has overtaken India and the nations. Mahatma Gandhi is dead. In the homage paid to him by a sorrowing nation.

"ln Morocco, I am in a good position to bear testimony to the active, personal commitment of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who set up the Foundation which I am honored to chair and which deals with climate and environmental issues," underlined the Princess.

"When least expected" nghĩa là gì?

"When least expected" -> nghĩa là khi không ngờ tới, ít cảnh giác nhất.

Ví dụ
We've been hammering (nện búa) this point home forever. The problem is you're fighting the invisible man. It just gets you when least expected, and we're seeing that in everything. It's an unfortunate thing.

One takeaway from 2020 is that rainy days can come when least expected. Setting aside the remaining $6 million in a reserve for transit service provides a fiscally-responsible buffer for unanticipated (không đoán trước được) events, such as lower-than-projected revenues in the early years of the new STBD measure as the region recovers from COVID-19. Seattle will continue to set aside funds throughout the life of the program to build a strategic reserve.

His deaths have always been lowkey (không quá xúc động), in that they happen when least expected and are superseded (thế chỗ) by the plot, only for the next movie to reveal that he’d faked his death all along. This MO allows him to slip by unnoticed.

Women who love shoes, particularly high heels, know the value of cobblers (thợ chữa giày). The heels tend to come off in the middle of streets, when least expected. It is the cobblers around Hotel Ambassadeur area, Banda Street and the bottom parts of Nairobi who come to the rescue of these women to save them from embarrassment (xấu hổ).

"Burned to a cinder" nghĩa là gì?

"Burned to a cinder" có cinder là than, xỉ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cháy rụi, cháy thành than.

Ví dụ
Most significantly, Syria’s economy is in tatters (tan vỡ), torn apart by a decade of unaffordable conflict, shredded (xé nát) by rife corruption and burned to a cinder by financial collapse next-door in Lebanon.

Now, it is certainly true that justifications (bào chữa) of sport can sound absurd (vô lý) in times of extremity (đường cùng). A year ago it was the prime minister, as the nation burned to a cinder, prating about Australians “gathered whether it’s at the SCG or around television sets all around the country and they’ll be inspired by the great feats of our cricketers from both sides of the Tasman and I think they’ll be encouraged by the spirit shown by Australians and the way that people have gone about remembering the terrible things that other Australians are dealing with at the moment….”

Michael Crawford’s Broadway reputation (danh tiếng) was burned to a cinder; he never returned. A few in the Steinman orbit refuse to speak about it even now, worried about reprisals (trả thù) and remaining bad blood.

For library staff, there was no doubt that whatever could be salvaged (cứu vớt), should be. Around 50,000 books were burned to a cinder and lost forever—but 12 years later, a new permanent exhibition at the library examines how a further 118,000 damaged books were saved. By the beginning of this year, 95,660 of these had been restored.

...In other words, reindeer lichen (địa y) have been having plenty of sex.

Lichen are composite organisms featuring fungi (nấm) and algae (tảo). Algae provide energy via photosynthesis (quang hợp), while the fungi secure nutrients (chất dinh dưỡng) from organic matter in rocks, soil and bark (vỏ cây).

When lichen reproduce (sinh sản) sexually, neighboring lichen exchange genetic information through intertwined root-like structures. The lichen then release single-cell spores.

Dispersed (phân tán, rải rắc, gieo vãi) by wind, the spores (bào tử, mầm mống) colonize new territory, sprouting genetically distinct lichen.

"Kill the clock" nghĩa là gì?

"Kill the clock" = diệt đồng hồ -> nghĩa là chiến thuật lui về bảo vệ sân nhà khi đã ghi được bàn thắng, chiến thuật câu giờ.

Ví dụ
After that, the Browns spent their final timeout (giờ không tính) of the game and -- through some heroics by Henne -- eventually were able to kill the clock for the win.

It stayed that way through regulation (sắp đặt) and, though the B’s were able to kill off a Grzelcyk hooking penalty taken with 1:24 left in regulation, they couldn’t get it to the shootout again. With the seconds ticking off the clock in OT, Charlie Coyle went to pin Severson up against the boards to kill the clock, but Severson made a nice backhand feed to a wide-open Sharangovic for the clean breakaway and goal.

However, it was sad to see Ryan Day lose his grip on the game in the second quarter. Getting the ball when OSU was down 18 points with a 1 minute, 43 seconds left in the half and playing to kill the clock, for fear Alabama would score again, was unjustifiable (vô lý).

Officials called for a review with 3 seconds left, as Stafford rushed to the line to spike the ball and kill the clock, and eventually determined Golladay's catch was called correctly on the field.

Nam diễn viên lừng danh Christopher Plummer qua đời ở tuổi 91

shared from fb phạm vũ lửa hạ,

Christopher Plummer, diễn viên Canada lừng danh, vừa qua đời.

9 năm trước, lúc nhận giải Oscar cho Nam diễn viên phụ xuất sắc nhất, cụ cảm ơn vợ và nói bà "xứng đáng được Giải Nobel Hòa bình vì vẫn cứu rỗi tôi từng ngày trong đời tôi."

(“my long suffering (chịu đựng, chịu đau khổ) wife, Elaine, who deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for coming to my rescue (cứu rỗi) every day of my life.”)

(“... that one doesn’t stop having a sex life just because one gets old. I thank god I still have that energy (năng lượng). It would be terrible (tồi tệ, thê thảm) to be a living corpse (xác sống). I believe you’ve got to try everything.”)

For years, until he came to share the widely held opinion of his best-known film — the beloved 1965 musical “The Sound of Music,” in which he starred as the Austrian naval officer Georg von Trapp opposite Julie Andrews — as a pinnacle (cực điểm, đỉnh cao nhất) of warmhearted family entertainment, Mr. Plummer disparaged it as saccharine claptrap, famously referring to it as “S&M” or “The Sound of Mucus.”

“That sentimental stuff is the most difficult for me to play, especially because I’m trained vocally and physically for Shakespeare,” Mr. Plummer said in a People magazine interview in 1982. “To do a lousy (tồi tệ, tệ hại) part like von Trapp, you have to use every trick you know to fill the empty (trống rỗng) carcass (xác súc vật, thân súc vật đã chặt đầu moi ruột (để đem pha)) of the role. That damn movie follows me around like an albatross.”

Mr. Plummer’s résumé, which stretched over seven decades, was at least colossal (khổng lồ), if not nonpareil, encompassing acting opportunities from some of dramatic literature’s greatest works to some of commercial entertainment’s crassest exploitations. He embraced it all with uncanny (lạ kỳ, phi thường, vượt quá cái bình thường, vượt quá cái được chờ đợi) grace (thái độ), or at least professional relish (có sức lôi cuốn, vẻ hấp dẫn; điều gây hứng thú, ý vị), displaying a uniform ease in vanishing into personalities not his own — pious (ngoan đạo, sùng đạo) or menacing (hăm dọa, đe dọa), benign (lành tính) or malevolent (ác ý, ác tâm), stern (nghiêm nghị) or mellow (vui vẻ, vui tính) — and a uniform delight in delivering lines written by Elizabethan geniuses and Hollywood hacks.

Vì sao chúng ta mê mẩn The Queen's Gambit?

Nature or nurture? Do bộ óc nam và nữ có những cách xử lý khác nhau hay do một sự tự lựa chọn nào đó?

...It depicts (miêu tả) the life (cuộc sống) of an imaginary (tưởng tượng) female chess prodigy (thần đồng) named Beth Harmon, who after learning the game from the janitor (người trông nom nhà cửa (khi chủ vắng mặt)) of the orphanage (trại trẻ mồ côi) she grows up in in the 1950s, goes on to become the world's greatest player.

..."The way the boys treat (đối xử) Beth in the series is a dream (giấc mơ); sadly, the reality is not like that," Judit Polgar, a Hungarian former professional (chuyên nghiệp) chess player and the only woman to have cracked the Top 10 in the game's 15-century history, has said.

Beth's character has many similarities with the late American grandmaster, and former world champion (vô địch thế giới), Bobby Fischer. Often described as one of the best players of all time, Fischer was also known for controversial comments he made including this one from 1963: "Women are terrible chess players ... I guess they're just not so smart (thông minh)."

His is not an isolated case. Garry Kasparov, a Russian chess grandmaster and former world champion who participated in the making of Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, also made misogynistic (thù ghét đàn bà) comments in the past but later reneged them having been beaten in competition by Polgar in 2002.

Although Polgar is the highest-ranking female player of all time, it is likely that others with similar potential preceded her but had their achievements (thành tựu) falling into oblivion (rơi vào quên lãng).

Like Maria Teresa Mora Iturralde, a Cuban woman who, in 1922 at the age of 20, defeated all-male rivals to become Cuban chess master and Ibero-American champion. She is the only person to have ever received lessons from José Raul Capablanca, the world champion from 1921 and 1927, and described as one of the greatest players of all time.

-----
In 1954, computer scientist (nhà khoa học máy tính) and brilliant mathematician (nhà toán học xuất chúng) Alan Turing died after biting into an apple laced with cyanide—a real-life version of Snow White and the poison apple (quả táo tẩm độc).

It’s long been assumed (cho là) that it was suicide (tự tử), perhaps because he was frustrated (tuyệt vọng) and overwhelmed (lẫn lộn cảm xúc) by the chemical castration (thiến hóa học) the British government forced upon him after he admitted (thừa nhận, thú nhận) to having a sexual relationship (quan hệ tình dục) with a man, which was against the law at the time. Recently, some have speculated that Turing’s death-by-apple wasn’t necessarily intentional (cố tình, có chủ tâm). He was known to be careless (sơ suất, lơ đễnh, cẩu thả) with his experiments (thí nghiệm), and accidentally inhaling cyanide or accidentally placing an apple in a cyanide puddle wouldn't have been outside of the realm of possibilities. Still another theory is that British Security Services considered Turing a high security risk (rủi ro cao về an ninh) because he was gay, and may have sabotaged him rather than risk that Turing would spill (làm lộ, tiết lộ) government secrets (bí mật chính phủ) or defect (đào tẩu) and work for the enemy.

Whatever happened, the fact remains that a half-eaten apple (quả táo cắn dở) was found by Turing’s bedside...

"Dead drop" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by henry perks on Unsplash

"Dead drop" = hộp thư chết -> nghĩa là (tình báo) nơi bí mật để hai người gửi và nhận tài liệu mà không cần phải giáp mặt.

Ví dụ
Once you have found all three Typhon logs (khúc gỗ), Tannis will inform you that she has uncovered the location of the dead drop. Bear in mind that even if you go to the location of the dead drop, you won't be able to access it until you have picked up all three logs first.

Run all the way down here towards the red light at the end, but be careful not to fall down the hole in the floor at the end. The dead drop is in the big container against the wall. Pop it open to score yourself a nice selection of high tier (hạng) weapons.

The MSS instructed an agent – a double agent (điệp viên hai mang) working for the FBI, as it turns out – to dead-drop SD cards full of classified (bí mật) data at various hotels. (“Dead drop” is spy-speak for techniques to pass information or items between two individuals using a secret location, so they never meet, to thereby keep the lid on the operation.)

When spies (điệp viên) need to make sure their colleagues get a package or a signal without anyone else knowing, they leave a dead drop in a specific location and trust that another spy—ideally the one they need to communicate with—will retrieve (lấy lại) the package.

"The still, small voice" nghĩa là gì?

"The still, small voice" = giọng nói nhỏ, yên lặng -> nghĩa là lương tâm của con người, nhất là khi định làm việc xấu.

Ví dụ
We’ve been so caught up in the happenings of the coronavirus, the election, the aftermath (hậu quả) of that, and I think it’s time for each of us to get away from all the noise long enough to hear the still, small voice of God again.

On usual days, I avoid boarding (sử dụng) commercial vehicles, the ones Nigerians call danfo, for this same reason. This Timi is too timid (rụt rè). I’d rather hop on an okada to my workplace than have the still small voice to contend (đấu tranh) with. I’d also prefer one-on-one evangelism with my motorcyclist – and even at that, it’d take extra courage – than preach to a host of people in a danfo.

People find it difficult to listen because they are overwhelmed (choáng ngợp) by the input coming to us from all directions — social media, the television, the constant barrage (chướng ngại vật) of news. All of these things make it difficult for people to focus on the root of all listening: the still, small voice that wells up (phun ra) from within.

We are putting out a call. Let’s honor his memory and use his day to heal (cứu chữa) this nation.  Let’s fast and fall silent, listening for the still small voice of that which remains great within us.  Let’s gather and walk, in every city and town, silently. Let’s reflect on our own transgressions (phạm tội) before our passions push this nation, and our democracy, over the edge.
