"Ever and anon" nghĩa là gì?

Xưa đến nay vẫn một nghề. Photo by Vignesh Moorthy on Unsplash

"Ever and anon" -> nghĩa là xưa và nay.

Ví dụ
Ever and anon, a rifle or musket (súng hỏa mai) would fall clattering (loảng xoảng) on the stony pike, as the man who carried it collapsed and sank in a quivering heap in the midst of the roadway.

Ever and anon the procession (đoàn diễu hành) would stop, and somebody (‘mourner’) would emit (tỏa ra) a nerve shattering howl and turn a somersault (nhào lộn) amid the frantic applause. And then the procession would continue.

"A vast (to lớn) flame, fierce (dữ dội) and strong, fragments of which were ever and anon borne away by the wind with the smoke. "Below this flame, below the dark balustrade (lan can) with its glowing trefoils (hình cỏ ba lá), two spouts, terminating in gargoyles, vomited sheets of fiery rain, whose silvery streams shone out distinctly against the gloom of the lowers part of the cathedral front."

I experienced a strange tumultuous (dữ dội) excitement that was pleasurable, ever and anon, mingled (lẫn vào) with a vague sense of fear and disgust. […] I was conscious of a love growing into adoration, and also of abhorrence (ghê tởm).

"Be bulging at the seams" nghĩa là gì?

"Be bulging at the seams" = phồng ra tại đường phân giới -> nghĩa (lóng) là rất đông đúc, tấp nập.

Ví dụ
WHEN an African ranger goes on night patrol (tuần tra), they never travel light. Martin Kinyua's backpack is bulging at the seams, and when I attempt to lift the load myself, I can barely raise it from the ground.

As everyone prepares for back to school — or back to homeschool — this crossed my mind. What is the 2020 backpack going to look like? And why do I think it will be bulging at the seams? I notice the stores, both online and in-person, have all the usual sales. What are the students going to need? What won’t they need? Should parents be prepared for one set of supplies for the first part of the school session and then another after Christmas if the situation changes?

Currently, because of certain storage issues, the burden falls on hospitals. And supplies are limited. “They’re already stressed taking care of patients and really bulging at the seams with patients,” Dr. Pontzer said. Improving the supply chain is another hurdle — whether it’s vaccines, testing supplies or personal protective equipment. “The PPE is better now than it was in the springtime, so that has ramped up and there has been help,” Dr. Pontzer said. Convincing people to wear masks is another daunting task. The president can mandate them in federal buildings, but other policies are up to the states and communities.

"Be bone dry" -> nghĩa là rất khô, khô rang.

Ví dụ
“If anyone has any superlatives (bậc nhất, xuất sắc) that haven’t been used yet, you know how to get in touch with me,” said Jim Nantz, the Super Bowl play-by-play announcer for CBS. “My reservoir (hồ chứa) is bone dry.”

“It’s that combination of dry air,” said Dan Gregoria, a National Weather Service meteorologist (nhà khí tượng học) in San Diego. “It’s going to be bone dry and then when you combine that with the strong winds if there’s any fire starts they can easily get out of control in this critical fire weather environment.

Jeanette Schreiber lives along the Little Wekiva River and would paddle it regularly. For the past several months she hasn’t even been able to drop her canoe in the water from the dock of her property. The river is bone dry. “Obviously we don’t have any more fish or otters,” Schreiber said, standing in what looks like a hiking trail, but is the dry Little Wekiva River. Water use to flow by her property. If anything, water is encroaching her property and not where the path of the river is supposed to be.

"Moral low ground" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy sống như vậy. Photo by Breanna Louise on Unsplash

"Moral low ground" -> nghĩa là lập trường hoặc quan điểm trái với đạo lý, không đáng tin khi so sánh với các lập trường, quan điểm khác.

Ví dụ
“Andrew Mlangeni is being praised (khen ngợi) by all for his integrity (chính trực), the fact that he was honest and didn’t steal from his people. That tells you a lot about the moral low ground in SA today. Shouldn’t it be normal to be honest and not steal from your people?” he said.

The refusal of the government to rescue migrant (nhập cư) boats adrift in the Maltese search-and-rescue zone is deeply disturbing and its justification for occupying the moral low ground unconvincing. Is absorption (thu hút) with the coronavirus truly a compelling enough reason to shelve Malta’s international obligation to save lives?

African states and Australian aborigines (thổ dân) have been equally vocal in claiming their artistic and religious heritage (di sản). Some have been successful as there’s a growing conscience among ex-colonial powers that they occupy the moral low ground on these issues.

This is one issue where both sides of the political divide wallow (đầm mình) in the moral low ground. There are currently no plans for tougher sentences for possession of cocaine. Why would there be?

"Be below full strength" -> nghĩa là không đạt sức mạnh, khả năng cao nhất.

Ví dụ
“In other words, local authority food teams went into the pandemic already 20 percent below full strength. These already stretched resources have been further depleted since.”

The suspension (treo giò, đình chỉ) of Steve Smith and David Warner means the Aussies will be below full strength this summer and India, sensing a chance for their first Test series win in Australia, have decided the variable of a pink-ball game would give the hosts an advantage.

Young injured his wrist on Saturday but was able to practice while wearing a "mini brace" on Sunday. He's struggled with his shot recently (25.0 field goal percentage over the past two games) and will likely remain below full strength on Monday night. In the event that Young is downgraded, the Hawks' offense will lean more on Cam Reddish, John Collins, and Kevin Huerter.

"The late unpleasantness" nghĩa là gì?

"The late unpleasantness" = vụ hiểu nhầm gần đây -> nghĩa là bất kỳ cuộc chiến nào gần đây (thường nói về cuộc Nội chiến Mỹ); nghĩa (mở rộng) là bất kỳ sự kiện, giai đoạn gây tranh cãi, chia rẽ nào.

Ví dụ
It's not like you can tell by the weather around here. And, by the way, your fall wardrobe may very well be hiding some nasty (ghê gớm) surprises about exactly how much you've fleshed out during the late unpleasantness.

The Lady Caroline Sula, Martinez’s sometime lover and absolute equal in the military-genius business, also survived the late unpleasantness with distinction (phân biệt), though necessarily with a somewhat lower profile, not only because she ran a ragtag (người nghèo) urban-guerrilla/assassination organization, but because she is not actually the semi-disgraced aristocrat (quý tộc) she is supposed to be but an imposter (kẻ giả mạo) with long-concealed criminal connections.

I spoke with Bill Clabough, executive (quản trị) director of Foothills. He was somewhat diffident about my enthusiasm for East Tennessee’s Union leaning. Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State, but the reference is to either the Mexican War or the War of 1812, not the Late Unpleasantness.

"I served as ambassador đại sứ quán) to France for our young, youthful government and got them to come over and help us with the late unpleasantness with the British empire (đế chế). And I worked on this little document called the Constitution," said William E. Baker-Palenik, who portrays Benjamin Franklin, one of America's founding fathers.

Her husband and co-editor, Joseph, tried to temper her activities. "Mrs. Bass, one of these days you are going to get me killed," he would often say. "Mr. Bass," she'd reply, "it will be in a good cause."

Art auctions are a fun and exciting way to start or grow a collection. Two forthcoming events are in good causes too. The SCOOP Art Auction is raising funds to build a maternity clinic in Syria. One hundred works by leading artists are on view at the Powerscourt Townhouse and Copperhouse Gallery, with the auction on April 28th.

Finnish children learn to take responsibility and manage risks at very young ages, in school and out. Following local customs, William’s 7-year-old son learned to walk to school by himself, across six street crossings and two busy main roads. One day, on a forest path, William came upon a delighted Finnish father applauding his 6-year-old daughter as she scrambled up a tall tree—to a height that would have petrified (làm tê liệt, sững sờ) many parents around the world. “If she falls and breaks her arm, it will be in a good cause. She will have learned something,” the father said nonchalantly (sơ suất, thờ ơ).

"Got stood up" nghĩa là gì?

"Got stood up" = bị cho đứng -> nghĩa là đi đến một cuộc hẹn nhưng người kia không tới; cho leo cây.

Ví dụ
Got stood up by a Tinder date after getting tested and quarantining for two weeks? Open up to us in the form below – we can guarantee anonymity if you so desire.

Barrymore told Andy Cohen she did "terribly" when she attempted online dating, revealing, "I got stood up and I didn't match with anyone." After her friends encouraged her to give it a go, things didn't go so smoothly, with Barrymore comparing the experience to a "car wreck." When Cohen asked if she "got stood up by a celebrity," Barrymore divulged, "No, I got stood up by a guy who owned a restaurant."

Going on online dates makes things less complicated. I don’t get stood up or left outside the theatre for two hours during a torrential downpour (mưa xối xả). Watching movies together with Netflix Party and starting music sessions on Spotify changes the game; we can listen to Lana Del Ray in sync as we both contemplate (suy ngẫm) our existences to “Video Games” on our bedroom floors.

Conversely, the fourth stock on this list, Lithium Americas, is a commodity (hàng hóa, sản phẩm) play in a space that could have limited shelf-life. While lithium is looking hot to trot for the time being, the electric vehicle batteries that are pumping its prices could be due a do-over.

When asked whether he could be persuaded after fellow comic Bailey emerged victorious last year, Carr said he’d consider signing up to Strictly – but on one condition. “Well you lose weight doing it,” he said. “I want to be treated as a serious artiste (nghệ sĩ sân khấu, diễn viên chuyên nghiệp) if I do. “There’d be no mucking about. I’d be hot to trot, like Fred Astaire.”

We have no doubt that loss making companies are, in general, riskier than profitable ones. And the fact is that over the last twelve months DutaLand Berhad lost money at the earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) line. And over the same period it saw negative free cash outflow of RM23m and booked a RM28m accounting loss. Given it only has net cash of RM524.9m, the company may need to raise more capital if it doesn't reach break-even soon. Importantly, DutaLand Berhad's revenue growth is hot to trot. High growth pre-profit companies may well be risky, but they can also offer great rewards. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. We've identified 3 warning signs with DutaLand Berhad (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

Ví dụ
In addition to Covid-19, the world is also facing a reckless trade war (chiến tranh thương mại), technological supremacy war (chiến tranh ưu thế về công nghệ), ultra-nationalism (chủ nghĩa dân tộc cực đoan) and closing opportunities for open trade. Countries seem to be hell bent on fighting a trade war with no exception. Although, it is impacting everyone, all are happy to fight in the name of national interest.

While the show was renewed for a second season in July of last year, Rhys has yet to see a script for it. “The writers are behind closed doors, teasing us with things. But I would assume, unless they take a drastic turn, that now that Perry’s taken the Bar [exam], we’ll see him as the fully-fledged (chính thức, đủ tư cách) lawyer,” Rhys said. “I have no idea what direction they’re going to take it in, [but] I think they’re hell-bent on throwing curveballs (cú phát bóng).”

This is why we have division of power into three segments as provided by the Constitution. President Biden is not smart enough to come up with these executive orders by himself. He is undoubtedly being heavily influenced by advisors that seem to be hell bent on taking complete control of the government.

The Reserve Bank decided to keep rates a record lows at the monetary policy (chính sách tiền tệ) committee’s (MPC) first meeting for 2021, and this could be good news for the residential property sector.

The researchers said spacing doses by three months was "an effective strategy for reducing disease, and may be the optimal for rollout of a pandemic vaccine when supplies are limited in the short term." That is good news, especially in the United Kingdom, where the race is on to vaccinate as much of the population as possible while a new, more transmissible variant spreads.

In the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert (chuyên gia hàng đầu quốc gia về bệnh truyền nhiễm), dismissed the idea of deliberately delaying second shots, saying the U.S. will “go by the science” and data from the clinical trials. The two doses of the Pifzer and Moderna vaccines are supposed to be given three and four weeks apart. Still, the research appears to be good news in the desperate effort to arrest the spread of the virus and also suggests a way to ease vaccine shortages and get shots into more arms more quickly.

WAFF-TV reports the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office mistakenly spent $22,000 on toilet paper and another $9,000 for 450 cases of trash bags. That’s a big problem, because its entire budget for janitorial supplies for next year is only $15,000.

County commissioners have negotiated a bill of more than $30,000 down by about half, but there’s another problem: Storing an extra two years’ worth of toilet paper.

While the Sheriff’s Department isn’t commenting, Commission Chairman James Hutcheson says workers realized (nhận ra, phát hiện ra) the mistake when a notice came in from the vendor (người bán).

“Be for the high jump” -> nghĩa là bị trừng trị, trừng phạt nghiêm khắc.

Thinking back to my own childhood in the 1970s, and having a glance through my own book library and video collection, there are several works that might be for the high jump.

He told a tech conference in north London on Wednesday: "I hadn't quite understood the full extent of this. "But if you look at the UK and look at how we trade in goods, we are particularly reliant (đáng tin cậy, tín nhiệm) on the Dover-Calais crossing. "And that is one of the reasons why we have wanted to make sure we have a specific and very proximate relationship (quan hệ gần gũi) with the EU, to ensure frictionless (không có ma xát) trade at the border." Mr Raab had joked at the start he was "terrified" of attending the conference because his wife works in tech marketing and "if I get anything wrong I am for the high jump when I get home".

There was a time when the Welsh Rugby Union outdid (giỏi hơn, vượt) both. Long before their kangaroo courts imposed life sentences on those who dared to consider offers from Rugby League, they subjected losing captains to draconian (hà khắc, tàn bạo) punishment. The Welsh had played 21 matches and chosen a different skipper for every one in the six years before Harry Bowcott took his turn, against England at the Arms Park in 1930. By all accounts, the butcher’s boy from Cardiff had a pretty decent match. "The captain was the first to be kicked out," he told me some years before his death in 2004 at the age of 97. "It didn’t seem to matter whether you’d had a good match. After losing to England, I knew I’d be for the high jump."

My old CSC jersey may have been the fatal attention but are things really that bad? “Be done to a turn” nghĩa là gì?

“Be done to a turn” = làm một lần là xong -> nghĩa là làm xong, hoàn thành đúng với thời gian mong muốn.

Ví dụ
The recipe uses 7- to 8-inch metal or bamboo skewers; if you have the latter, soak them in water before you begin meal prep. Here’s why you need them: The chunks of fish cook more evenly, and the glaze will be done to a turn on all sides. (We tested the salmon pieces strewn on a pan; trust us!) They look nice on skewers as well, and portions are kind of automatic — which may or may not discourage your dining pals from spearing an extra piece or two.

I thought about all these things the two times I saw this season’s marvelous Stratford production of Waiting For Godot. (Which, by the way, I am very sorry not to have reviewed until now, though it seems to have sold very well without any help from me.) It is hard for me to imagine a better treatment of the play. Jennifer Tarver is one of my favorite directors, and Beckett is right smack in the middle of her wheelhouse. Tom Rooney and Stephen Ouimette are perfectly paired as Vladimir and Estragon, Rooney all long limbs in too-short pants and jacket, Ouimette’s face turned into the mask of a sad clown to match his baggy pants and unlaced boots. Every vaudeville (kịch vui, chương trình tạp kỹ) trick is done to a turn, even the hat-swapping bit in the second act.

It was Woolf who said, “One cannot think well, love well or sleep well if one has not dined well,” which seems like a call for a riotous shindig (cãi lộn om sòm) or at least a slap-up meal (perhaps made with a copy of Orlando in one hand). The mealtimes in her novels are sure to leave anyone with an appetite whetted for more than just her words; you could almost use To the Lighthouse as your recipe for boeuf en daube, such is the detail. (“The beef, the bayleaf, and the wine – all must be done to a turn. To keep it waiting was out of the question.”) This is a woman whose life was studded with anecdotes (chuyện vặt, giai thoại) about food: she was a keen pickler, once baked her own wedding ring into a cake and had a friendly rivalry (ganh đua, thù địch) with her sister over their bread-making skills. Not surprisingly, her (fraught) relationship with her cook was rich and complex enough to fill an entire biography.

He was compos mentis, absolutely fine in that sense, but we weren’t prepared to play with ten men for that long. Hopefully though he should be fine for the game at the weekend.”

Whether or not the show could go no without him is still undetermined, however, Lord Sugar did express his views on this just last year where he called himself ‘irreplaceable’. ‘I’ve often had thoughts of when am I going to give it up, Next season will be the 16th. I think I would max out at 20 years, a 20-year ceremony,’ he told journalist Laura Harding. ‘I think enough is enough then, I would be 77 and I might not be compos mentis by then, you never know.’

he also claimed that the students have only resumed on their own volition without being officially asked to resume whereas they were officially asked to resume and this was announced in various media of mass communication, the danger of the cognitive dissonance (bất hòa về nhận thức, kinh nghiệm) presently displayed by the Rector is that it may metamorphose (biến hình, biến hóa) to cognitive derailment (sự trật bánh) which may be inimical (thù địch, độc hại) to the interest of the institution as effective management of an institution of higher learning requires a pretty sound mind for the boss to be compos mentis.

Prof Devi Sridhar of Edinburgh University, says it was assumed the virus could not be contained and instead had to be managed. Section 318 of the CrPC prescribes the procedure where the accused does not understand the proceedings. It says that if the accused, though not of unsound mind, cannot be made to understand the proceedings, the trial court may proceed with the inquiry or trial and if it results in a conviction, the proceedings shall be forwarded to the High Court with a report of the circumstances of the case. The High Court then passes thereon (do đó) such an order as it thinks fit.

The most glaring example of the social context in mental disease was the Soviet Union declaring dissidents (phản đối, chống đối) to be suffering from psychiatric disorders (rối loạn tâm thần). Perhaps the Soviet doctors, given their belief in the Communist system really believed such people must be of unsound mind. The fact that you can argue this, even if the reality was they were just excuses for torture, shows how subjective the definition of mental disease can be. There are no bacteria, growths, or lesions (thương tổn) to point to for a diagnosis, only the opinion of the professional within the standards established by the profession.

But even with its artsy culture and hipster vibes, you can only imagine how weirded out people in Footscray would have been on their way to work this morning.

Arguably nature's least beautiful (xấu nhất) animals, naked mole rats (chuột dũi trụi lông) speak in dialects (phương ngữ) local to their own colonies and are hostile to outsiders.

Naked mole rats are "really highly unusual in that they're the most social rodent (bộ gặm nhấm) that we know of," Gary Lewin, senior author and professor in neurobiology at Germany's Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC), told CNN.

The furless (trụi lông) rodents can live in colonies of up to 300 members, and though there is only one breeding female per colony, "every animal in the colony has a role: Some are soldiers, some are workers, and they cooperate," he said. "It's always been a mystery (điều khó hiểu, kỳ bí) how they can be so organized."

Found in arid parts of East Africa, naked mole rats weigh around 2.8 ounces and have a body measuring up to 3.5 inches and a tail that can reach 2 inches.

Some mole rats even band together to assassinate (ám sát) their queen (nữ hoàng).

Oscar Wilde once said that “people know the price of everything and the value of nothing”. For Diario Sport, this sums up (kết luận) the reaction to Lionel Messi‘s recently leaked (rò gỉ) Barcelona contract.

In the midst of the greatest pandemic in a hundred years, when IT underinvestment (đầu tư thiếu) and antiquated (cổ xưa) infrastructure has been exposed, we unfortunately continue to hear from some that the solution is to starve investment. This same cynical (người hay nhạo báng) crowd always seems to know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

“There are a lot of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing,” the art collector Stefan Edlis remarks in Nathaniel Kahn’s new documentary. The words, unattributed (không được đổ cho) in the film and the source of its title, come from “Lady Windermere’s Fan” by Oscar Wilde, where they supply the definition of a cynic.

About halfway through The Price of Everything, director Nathaniel Kahn’s new documentary about the vicissitudes (thăng trầm) of the contemporary art market, mega-collector Stefan Edlis gives the filmmaker his title: “There’s a lot of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing,” quips Edlis in his thick Austrian accent, summing up the dichotomy (lưỡng phân) at the heart of Kahn’s project.
