"At each other's throats" nghĩa là gì?

"At each other's throats" -> nghĩa là đang cãi nhau, giận dỗi, hằm hè với nhau.

Ví dụ
The two companies have been at each other’s throats for quite a some time now. The game originally launched in summer of 2019, but then disappeared from most online storefronts (cửa hàng) in August 2020 due to a dispute over royalties.

The film is set in the explosive 1960s in the era of the Newark riots (nổi loạn), when the African-American and Italian communities are often at each other’s throats. But among the gangsters within each group, the dangerous rivalry becomes especially lethal (chết người).

Speaking at IGN Fan Fest 2021, Snyder has revealed that, rather than being at each other's throats, Deathstroke and Batman will be working together for the greater good.

The world of Kumandra is shattered (vỡ nát). Where there was once harmony, five separate lands now stand divided and at each other’s throats. Now, with the revival of an ancient supernatural enemy, much of the world feels desolate (tàn phá); almost akin to a post-apocalyptic wasteland…

"An uphill task" nghĩa là gì?

"An uphill task" có uphill là khó khăn, vất vả -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nhiệm vụ khó khăn, đầy thách thức.

Ví dụ
The Congress is hoping to benefit from the anti-incumbency (chống đương nhiệm) factor as well as the public protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and agri laws in the upcoming round of assembly polls, but still faces an uphill task in the coming days.

Vaccination of polling officials to be an uphill task. Inoculating (tiêm chủng) around 2 lakh officials by March 31 as directed by state will overwhelm health dept; authorities (chính quyền) already struggling with vaccination of frontline (tuyến đầu) workers

With the election for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation just a few days away, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be facing an uphill task.

Given Pakistan’s local power topology, integration (hòa nhập) of economic and political conception into development seems an uphill task. However, in an era of ‘priority overload’, fundamental institutional adjustments are key for any meaningful change to begin. Aid (hỗ trợ) interventions can achieve the desired positive results when locally driven and owned at the micro level.

"Send him up the river" nghĩa là gì?

"Send (one) up the river" -> nghĩa tống cổ ai vào tù.

Ví dụ
But the scene in 1991’s Cape Fear in which De Niro’s Max Cady — an ex-convict (cựu tù nhân) hell bent on revenge against the family-man lawyer who helped send him up the river 14 years prior — rapes and mutilates (làm tổn thương) Douglas’ character, with whom Nick Nolte’s Sam Bowden has been having an affair, is the elephant in this movie’s room.

Hernandez fears that she’ll be showing up to testify (làm chứng) against him at trial, and Hernandez’s lawyers want to know if the mother of his child is about to send him up the river.

No outs at all for this guy, send him up the river, he knew what he was doing. I don’t feel sorry for him, not nary a bit.

And I think that it’s actually very timely right now, that there’s a lot of the arrogance of colonialism and the lack of respect for indigenous (bản xứ) cultures expressed in the characters in HEART OF DARKNESS, and there is a definite class divide between the people who send him up the river and the people who are trying to collect ivory out the jungle.

"Send him on an errand" nghĩa là gì?

Anh ở khắp mọi nơi. Photo by Afif Kusuma on Unsplash

"Send (one) on an errand" có errand là việc vặt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sai ai đó làm việc vặt.

Ví dụ
You may send him on an errand where he doesn’t have to bring his phone. For example, request him to do some mowing (cắt cỏ). Alternatively, you can wait on the natural times that he leaves his phone behind. A good example is when he is going swimming and leaves the phone in the house.

Dawson starts to pipe up (bất ngờ đưa ra) with an idea, but Nellie immediately shouts him down and send him on an errand for more film. I’m still Team Nellie on the “Dawson should shut up” item, but hey: if the kid can’t get the shot, maybe listen?

In “State of Independence”, the terrorists achieve a new low (high?) in tactical brazenness (trơ tráo). Nazir’s people call Brody on the very afternoon that Brody is getting ready to speak at the fund-raiser for neglected veterans and send him on an errand that, frankly, any yutz with a Chevette could probably do: get the tailor/bomb-maker and spirit him away to a safe house before the CIA can swoop him up.

“I am a mature (trưởng thành) person. They are trying to confuse me. I will judge Kulli for myself. If Chandrika is forced on me as an escort, it will be easy enough to distract him. I will send him on an errand, to get body oil for massage. ‘Wait for me at the crossroads when you return with the body oil.’

"Live like a maggot in bacon" nghĩa là gì?

"Live like a maggot in bacon" = sống như con dòi trong miếng thịt xông khói -> nghĩa là có cuộc sống an nhàn, sung túc, giàu sang.

Ví dụ
I've always been fascinated by foreign idioms; they give us a unique insight (nhìn thấu) into the culture that uses them. Did you know that in German you can say "to live like a maggot in bacon" instead of "to live the life of luxury"? Idioms can tell us a lot about what matters to a nation. They're a window to the soul.

I compiled (tuân theo) the following quiz with help from Bhalla and his book, plus friends and colleagues who have used or been confused by the following phrases, sometimes simultaneously, at home or in their travels. It's a tiny snapshot of the essential mystery and goofy poetry of the world. Good luck and, as the Germans say for some reason, may you live like a maggot in bacon.

Well, if you are in Germany just tell people you are going to live like a maggot in bacon. Of course, you might want to brave the German equivalent of the saying. If you say it in English people may just think you are strange.

Ai yêu bác Cu-ô-mô bằng các em Niu Óoc

thống đốc Andrew Cuomo của bang new york muốn thơm một em gái ở đám cưới hồi tháng 9/2019, bị chụp ảnh lại và tố cáo 'quấy rối tình dục'...

The governor (thống đốc) was working the room after toasting the newlyweds (tân lang tân nương), and when he came upon (gặp mặt) Ms. Ruch, now 33, she thanked him for his kind words about her friends. But what happened next instantly unsettled her: Mr. Cuomo put his hand (đặt tay) on Ms. Ruch’s bare lower back (lưng trần), she said in an interview on Monday.

When she removed his hand with her own, Ms. Ruch recalled, the governor remarked that she seemed “aggressive” (gây hấn, hùng hổ) and placed his hands on her cheeks. He asked if he could kiss (hôn) her, loudly enough for a friend standing nearby to hear. Ms. Ruch was bewildered (bối rối, hoang mang, lúng túng, ngơ ngác) by the entreaty (khẩn nài, xin), she said, and pulled away as the governor drew closer.

“I was so confused (bối rối) and shocked and embarrassed (xấu hổ),” said Ms. Ruch, whose recollection (nhớ lại, hồi tưởng lại) was corroborated (làm chứng, chứng thực) by the friend, contemporaneous (tồn tại hoặc xảy ra cùng một lúc; cùng thời) text messages (tin nhắn) and photographs from the event. “I turned my head away and didn’t have words in that moment.”
