"Try as I may" nghĩa là gì?

Mệt quá rồi nên nghỉ. Photo by Anastasiia Tarasova on Unsplash

"Try as I may" -> nghĩa là đã cố hết sức rồi, nỗ lực lắm rồi.

Ví dụ
Another memorable (đáng nhớ) incident occurred when I was about 5 years old and I was visiting their house. I needed to go to the bathroom. Somehow, try as I may, I could not get the doorknob (tay nắm cửa) to turn so that I could get out.

It’s been six months since these launched and try as I may, I still can’t fall in love with them. The main offender is the fact that their audio constantly cuts out in such extreme ways that they’re virtually (gần như) unusable.

Try as I may though I couldn't find any recipes (công thức) for such an idea, so I got brave this year and made my own.  My whole house was toasty-warm by the time I finished this tasty syrup.

Try as I may, for the life of me,Ii dont understand how so many of these pedos make it to an arrest unscathed (vô sự). Were it my kid, the offender would be *praying* the cops got him first...bc i'd be grabbing my keys and discussing it in person waaay before 911 even entered my mind.

“Hell of a mess” nghĩa là gì?

“Hell of a mess” = địa ngục rắc rối -> nghĩa là hoàn cảnh, tình huống vô cùng tồi tệ, hỗn độn.

Ví dụ
Lagos is a major city in Nigeria where the Avengers, and Wanda specifically, left a hell of a mess that the entire MCU wrestled with for years.

Nine years later, there is very little of that. The UN seems powerless, and civilians are once again suffering. Some 350,000 have been displaced inside the country. Tens of thousands risk dangerous sea crossings into Europe, where they are barely tolerated if they make it at all. Libya's civil war continues, spiralling into an international free-for-all. "It's one hell of a mess," said Ahmed Dahmani, a 30 year-old engineer from Tripoli.

Don't let the title fool you. Hell in this book isn't some far flung, war-torn or disease-ravaged country. (Although they do make appearances.) It's not the struggles of setting up your own business or even the deflation (sự giải lạm phát) that comes from being one of the most significant players on the international stage, complete with security detail and airplane, to now getting pulled aside for a bag check at airport security. It's not about the "hell of a mess" aspects of life.

“Mess of pottage” nghĩa là gì?

“Mess of pottage” = món súp thịt hầm (dựa theo câu chuyện trong Kinh Thánh nói về Ê-sau vì quá đói mà đã bán quyền trưởng nam của mình cho người em trai là Gia-cốp chỉ để đổi lấy món súp này) -> nghĩa là (dại dột) bán thứ có giá trị lâu dài lấy cái ít giá trị hơn.

Ví dụ
Besides, the individual concerned would be devaluing himself in the eyes of all irrevocably (không thể hủy bỏ, thay thế) and revealing himself to be a person who would be willing to compromise his moral integrity for petty worldly gain or a ‘mess of pottage’. This happens all the while in Lankan public life. Some of those who have wielded and are wielding immense power in Sri Lanka leave very much to be desired from these standards.

“Men lose their birthrights (quyền thừa kế, đặc quyền dành cho con đầu) for a mess of pottage,” lamented Llewellyn about his pastoral community as he watched slag heaps from the mine flow down and eventually cover their precious, green valley and their very homes. Coal mining was their only income, and it eventually destroyed all they loved.

“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice. Ye are a factious (có tính chất gây bè phái) crew, and enemies to all good government. Ye are a pack of mercenary (hám lợi) wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money. Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you?

“Make a mess of” nghĩa là gì?

We know it's tempting to eat lunch at your desk when you're busy or approaching a deadline, but this is asking to make a mess of your office chair. It also promotes wellbeing and productivity to step away from your screen and/or desk and have a proper break from concentrating on your work.

“When we choose to avoid a situation, or take an off-ramp or make a mess of something, it effects how we are seen and how we view ourselves,” he says. “If you manage through that last 8% it means you don’t burn up energy in anxiety, you’re managing intentions, and you stay in relationship with those who are you having the tough conversation.”

Sure you can use a three hundred dollar hot knife to cut rigid foam. For most weekend warriors, however, those tools cost too much. Most power saws just make a mess of the foam and are usually overkill. Some types of foam let you score and break it with a utility knife. Still, one of the easiest ways to cut the stuff is with a handsaw. With the quick push-pull of the saw, you can easily make straight or even curved cuts. Best of all, you really minimize the mess.

“Mess face up” nghĩa là gì?

“Mess (one’s) face up” -> nghĩa (lóng) là đấm vào mặt ai.

“And we don’t want her to mess her face up.’ But sometimes you just have to listen to your heart, and my heart was saying that I need to do more, I’m not happy with this. Life is short. I can’t just do a job I’m not happy with. I’m happy that I made the choice to branch out and take a bit of a risk.”

In the Augusta County case, deputies were called to a home on Mill Creek Lane in Stuarts Draft on Nov. 1, 2018, where they found the woman injured. Wexler, still at the scene, was caught with a 12-inch miniature (thu nhỏ, bức tiểu họa) baseball bat that he slipped up his coat sleeve. Blood was discovered on the bat and Wexler's clothing. He was also found with a knife that wasn't used in the attack. The victim was a throat cancer survivor who had a tracheotomy (phẫu thuật mở khí quản). "He said he wanted to close my throat, and said he wanted to mess my face up," the victim said in a statement to authorities. She was hit three times in the face with the bat.

Many soldiers lost the number of their mess in the fight, and Eren was eaten at the end of the volume, which made fans think that the protagonist (vai chính) had already died.

The forces have surrounded the hills where warriors drove some cows adding that they will be got. He, however, could not confirm whether some warriors lost the number of their mess or injured, saying it was too early to tell since the forces are still on the ground hunting for the warriors.

During the summers, people usually tend to wear Jesus boots as they don’t warm them up like shoes and socks. There are multiple types of sandals and people can buy them in different styles and designs. People are advised to see whether the sandals provide good support for their feet and they should properly try them before purchasing.

"Out of whack" nghĩa là gì?

"Out of whack" -> nghĩa là không còn hoạt động tốt, không ổn định, trong trạng thái hỗn loạn.

Ví dụ
These numbers are severely out of whack with general attitudes in other European countries. On Tuesday, the consulting (cố vấn) firm Kekst CNC reported soaring vaccine acceptance (chấp nhận) rates, with 73% of Germans and 76% of Swedes being up for the jab.

I'm sure that there was some high stress for that first event because obviously if that doesn't run smoothly (mượt mà, êm đẹp) it would've really thrown everything out of whack," Morris said. "The ladies did a fantastic job. You know they were kind of guinea pigs which is unfortunate but it definitely went over well.  It went over smoothly."

Pirates pitching coach Oscar Marin and bullpen coach Justin Meccage challenged Brubaker to work on his consistency (kiên định), repeat his delivery and stay in line. Shelton said Brubaker “got rotational” at times last season, something that was evident when he was out of whack.

For instance, the relationship between loan-to-value (LTV) and debt service coverage (mức độ bao phủ) is “kind of out of whack,” Steven Schmidt, national director and production manager for seniors housing at Freddie Mac, said Wednesday during a Leadership Huddle webcast from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC).

Ví dụ

The Senate Housing Committee and chair, Senator Barbara Blackmon, met with MHC Thursday to discuss the program rollout, talk about ways to prevent double-dipping, and encourage the agency to use the majority of the funds before September 30, or lose them.

"The goal is to pass that bill within the next two weeks and at that point, restaurant owners would be applying for these grants, they are not allowed to double-dip...in other words, it will work with the PPP program, if they got PPP help, they have to show that they needed additional help so that there wasn't a double benefit," King said.

"At one go" nghĩa là gì?

"At one go" -> nghĩa là tất cả cùng lúc, trong lần thử đầu tiên.

Ví dụ
The LG Dishwasher (máy rửa bát) with the 14-place setting feature lets you clean various (đa dạng) kinds of utensils (dụng cụ) at one go. So now host can do get together with as many people at one go and save their time and water.

BJP State president Bandi Sanjay, on Tuesday, alleged that the State government has been acting irresponsibly (thiếu trách nhiệm) while private educational institutes were harassing students to pay their yearly fees at one go.

OPEC+ isn't going to remove the production caps all at one go, so that should help ease (làm dịu) the market into the idea that they will do so slowly and in tandem (ngồi sau) with the improving global outlook; although surely high prices do also matter.

There is an interesting change in the design of the bar. The KitKat fingers have been divided (chia ra) into cubes. The consumer can now have the full bar at one go or break it into the smaller cubes.

-----
Wednesday’s flight (chuyến bay) of the Sudanese Tarco airline (hãng hàng không) bound for Qatar’s capital (thủ đô), Doha, was proceeding in a totally routine manner – that is, until a most unlikely and unwelcome passenger (vị khách không được chào đón) caused the mid-air emergency (tình huống khẩn cấp trên không trung).

Having departed from Khartoum International Airport, the plane (máy bay) was in the air for roughly half-an-hour when an unregistered passenger was spotted inside the pilot’s cabin. The passenger in question was a ferocious (dữ tợn, hung ác, dã man, tàn bạo) cat.

The feline (giống mèo; giả dối, nham hiểm, thâm hiểm) clearly wasn’t a big fan of flying, as it acted aggressively and attacked the crew (phi hành đoàn, thủy thủ đoàn). Apparently, after all attempts to restrain the furry hijacker (kẻ cướp máy bay nhiều lông) failed, the pilot (phi công, cơ trưởng) made a decision to turn the plane around and return to the Sudanese capital.

Information revealed that the aircraft had spent a night stationed at a hangar (nhà chứa máy bay) at the Khartoum airport ahead of the flight. This suggested that the cat likely sneaked (lẻn vào, trốn, lén) aboard during cleaning or an engineering review (kiểm tra kỹ thuật/động cơ) and hid inside the cabin and fell asleep.

"Have a vested interest" nghĩa là gì?

"Have a vested interest" có vested là (thuộc) quyền sở hữu bất di bất dịch -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quyền lợi bất di bất dịch.

Ví dụ
"I think she is right up to the top level, obviously I have a vested interest in that and punters probably have a bit of a different view. "I feel she is a genuine Group 1 winner in waiting so we will get our chance and she's going the right way."

The entire drone (thiết bị bay không người lái) ecosystem should benefit from the FAA's rule, including drone manufacturers, who have a vested interest in ensuring that their products are not used for illegal purposes; law-abiding drone operators, who will be able to fly their drones over certain crowds and at night; and law enforcement personnel, who will obtain important information from leading counter-drone technologies about drones and operators involved in dangerous or hostile incidents.

If you have structured your contract to make money based on the bid-ask spread … you have a vested interest and economic interest in bringing unsophisticated (đơn giản) customers to the market makers, right? Because that’s how you make more money.

Other businesses outside the medical waste sector also have a vested interest in those elective surgeries returning to full volume — hospitals lost $20 billion from suspending (tạm hoãn) elective surgeries over three months while the U.S. dealt with the beginning of the pandemic.

"Draw a long bow" nghĩa là gì?

Ủa mũi tên đâu rồi? Photo courtesy: Walter Hammerwold

"Draw a long bow" = kéo cung dài -> nghĩa là thổi phồng, cường điệu, nói quá, thường dùng trong chính trị.

Ví dụ
Now it would be drawing a longbow to say Labor started haemorrhaging (mất mát, thất thoát) seats solely because of the speed limits. There is a whole list of things that led to their eventual downfall (sụp đổ).

I’d argue that you don't need to draw a long bow to see that it was the brand's attempt at countering the whole SUV thing, in its own very Germanic way. Audi is a brand that sees itself selling automobiles packed with dynamism (thuyết động lực học) – cars with great driving prowess (kỹ năng).

It might be easy to draw a long bow to the production’s contemporary political valence. Particularly in its theme of toppling of power for past sins – almost indelible ink (mực không tẩy được) in today’s press – as Lord Chiltern treads murky water (đứng nước). Threatened by the exposure of his misdoings, he attempts to exorcise (xua đuổi) his past by quelling (dập tắt) the blackmailing by unscrupulous (cẩu thả) Mrs Chevely.

"Dance with the devil" nghĩa là gì?

Nhảy nào! Photo courtesy: bernard levine

"Dance with the devil" = nhảy múa với quỷ dữ -> nghĩa là tham gia vào hành vi mạo hiểm, liều lĩnh, có thể trái đạo đức.

Ví dụ
Antonio Campos has no room for fluff (làm không thành công) or forgettable movies. He's willing to dance with the devil because he knows, deep down, we will always watch.

"I’ve danced with the devil many times, but now I may have to change my name to ‘Lucky,’" said Blankenship, after escaping the flames tearing through his home.

Social media, for example, has had a big impact, but regulators, the public and its creators have been (perhaps wilfully) blind to its pernicious impacts on democracy and pluralistic (thuyết đa nguyên) debate. Growing understanding of the negatives may leave many in culture not wanting to dance with the devil of social media. And yet for many segments of the population, social media has become the only realistic means of engaging them in new forms of culture, leisure and entertainment. So, dance with the devil we all must, but in a way that doesn’t conflict with our values and contributes to some broadly Reithian principles regarding the growth of human knowledge and mutual understanding.

"Check your privilege" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

"Check your privilege" có priviledge là đặc quyền, đặc ân, = 'xem lại đặc quyền của mình đi' -> cụm từ này ý nói nhắc nhở ai đó có cuộc sống thoải mái, 'số hưởng, 'sinh ra ở vạch đích' như nào để thấu hiểu và thông cảm với hoàn cảnh khó khăn (cảnh ngộ khốn khổ) của người khác.

Ví dụ
One worker wrote: “There’s no such thing as unconscious bias?! Are you joking? Please do your research before just making such statements. Check your privilege.” Another employee wrote: “People are struggling with serious mental health issues and having our leadership tell us to shut up and pull ourselves up by our bootstraps is heartbreaking.”

Within the space of a single episode, Ginny goes from never so much as kissing to having unprotected sex; plot (cốt truyện) devices like a “sophomore sleepover” feel like a relic (thánh tích) from the John Hughes era, but they’re populated with queer romances and flirty zingers like “check your privilege.”

C is for "check your privilege," D is for "defund the police." They are not the standard (tiêu chuẩn) ABCs, but they are for socially conscious households, one author said.

We need some originality (độc đáo) in our woke politics to start shaming nepotistic privilege. When woke millennials say ‘check your privilege’, they don’t include nepotism because American news sites haven’t yet written about it yet.
