"Hail a cab" nghĩa là gì?

"Hail a cab" có hail là lời gọi, réo -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bắt xe taxi.

Ví dụ
It’s similar to what we’ve seen in Asia with the rise of apps (ứng dụng) like WeChat, where you use them to hail a cab, to buy electronics, to book a doctor’s appointment all through messaging applications.

“People are tired of janky (vui vẻ) apps for financial products,” says Kathryn Haun, the Andreessen partner who led the deal. She compared the appetite for new fintech products today to the reception that Uber received when it launched. “People didn't want to have to go call a number to hail a cab and go stand on the street corner,” Haun adds, saying there’s a similarly “hungry market” that Eco will tap.

Prince Akeem and Semmi take British Airways and land at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The filming location for the scene is actually Terminal (nhà đón khách) 7, where British Airways is still located today. In the background, as they exit the terminal and hail a cab, you can see the TWA Flight Center in the background. Since Coming to America was filmed, the TWA Flight Center has been transformed into the TWA Hotel.

We were introduced briefly (ngắn gọn) when he finished. Then it was my turn on set. Ten minutes later, the director said we were done, and I headed for the elevator, where I saw Larry waiting. We made a little small talk on the way down. His stretch limo was curbside. I started to hail a cab.

"Pay the freight" nghĩa là gì?

"Pay the freight" có freight là hàng hóa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là trả tiền, thanh toán.

Ví dụ
The Bills of Lading Act is meant to protect carriers (hãng chuyên chở) against the risk that a shipper won’t pay the freight and give the carrier a remedy (phương thuốc) against the consignee.

For the past decade, asset (tài sản) values were largely better than the earnings underlying those ships. You didn’t really earn your cost of capital. And if the charterers (thuê tàu) weren’t willing to pay the freight rates to justify the asset values, Wall Street wasn’t going to give that valuation either.

That leaves an easy intersection (giao nhau) of a player whom Tampa probably shouldn’t franchise, one who is good enough to make an impact for a bad team, and the team that can afford to pay the freight to move Barrett across the state.

“I think anybody executing trades would be smart to get clarity (rõ ràng) in advance that the player wouldn’t opt out,” Cashman said. “No one would want to pay the freight under those types of circumstances.”

Thật cường tráng

các nhà khảo cổ người anh không nhịn được cười khi tìm thấy cối xay 2.000 năm tuổi chạm khắc con CU lớn... :D
-----
...The team have been examining artefacts (đồ tạo tác) that were unearthed (khai quật) on Britain’s biggest roads. It is fair to say they could not believe it when they found a 2,000-year-old millstone (cối xay) decorated (được trang trí) with an enhanced penis (dương vật).

Steve Sherlock, Highways England’s Archaeology (khảo cổ học) Lead for the A14, said: “The phallus (tượng dương vật (để tôn thờ, biểu tượng cho sức sinh sản của thiên nhiên)) was seen as an important image of strength and virility (tính cường dương; khả năng có con; tính hùng dũng, kiên cường) in the Roman world."

He told Cambridgeshire Live that Roman fighters (chiến binh la mã) would often wear good-luck charms (bùa may mắn) engraved (khắc, trổ, chạm) with penises before entering battle (trước khi vào trận đấu).

This is the latest in a series of bizarre discoveries found by archaeologists working on Highways England’s £1.5 billion A14 upgrade project in Cambridgeshire which started in November 2016 and was completed in March 2020.

Experts were then invited to investigate the ancient relics (thánh tích cổ xưa) found during the work on the road between Cambridge and Huntingdon. More than 300 querns (cối xay) - a type of stone tool - and millstones were recovered during the project.

Hòa bình ơi, ing lần ơi

tạm ngưng thương chiến giữa mỹ và uk đồng nghĩa với rượu whisky rẻ hơn cho người dân mỹ... ;)
-----
The United States has agreed to suspend (đình chỉ; hoãn; tạm thời ngưng; treo giò) tariffs (thuế quan) on UK products including Scotch whisky and cashmere (khăn len casơmia) as both sides work to resolve (giải quyết) a long-running dispute (tranh cãi) over Boeing and Airbus subsidies (trợ cấp).

..."This will benefit a wide range of industries on both sides of the Atlantic, and allow for focused settlement negotiations (đàm phán) to ensure that our aerospace (không gian vũ trụ) industries can finally see a resolution and focus on Covid recovery and other shared goals," the two countries said in the joint statement on Thursday.

The decision to suspend the tariffs was cheered by Diageo, the UK spirits company whose products include Johnnie Walker Scotch.

"Today is a very good day for Scotch and Scotland," said Ivan Menezes, Diageo's CEO. He added that the agreement would "safeguard thousands of jobs across Scotland and the United Kingdom."

"Builder's tea" nghĩa là gì?

"Builder's tea" = trà thợ xây -> nghĩa là trà sữa pha đậm (uống trong bữa ăn sáng).

Ví dụ
"She said he loved Coronation Street and that he loved a builder's tea with a lot of sugar in it. I feel like that was guided by her for sure.".

A workman who gruffly ordered a no-nonsense cup of 'builders' tea' from a well-spoken woman over his shoulder was stunned to learn he'd been made his morning brew by the Queen.

Unilever’s chief executive, Alan Jope, said traditional tea drinkers were a dying breed, with drinkers of black tea “getting older and consuming less and starting to fall over”. He said traditional “builder’s tea” drinkers were “not into experimenting and trying new products”.

"Burst into sight" nghĩa là gì?

"Burst into sight" có burst là xuất hiện đột ngột -> cụm từ này nghĩa là xuất hiện bất ngờ.

Ví dụ
The distinctive (dễ phân biệt) creature burst into sight after infrared (hồng ngoại) cameras captured its figure about 2,000 meters above sea level in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in April 2019. With no spots on its body and unique red eyes, the wild giant panda was concluded to be an albino, hitherto the only one of its kind anywhere on earth.

There is a point where there will be no birds and then suddenly the birds burst into sight, except they have been there all along. I had that moment on the beach. A group of dunlins, dowitchers, Western sandpipers, black bellied plovers (chim choi choi) and semipalmated plovers snapped into view. I had my camera and a 300 mm long lens.

Kovarik burst into sight at the heavily-spectated bottom end of the course, some 10 seconds earlier than the watching crowd had expected, catching everyone unawares.

He has previewed (xem trước) the song for fans, and said, “I shouted the words in the first daylight and a chorus of words burst into sight. Now I know that I'm hers, for whatever it's worth, by the rule that's in the sky.”

"Everything's tickety-boo" nghĩa là gì?

"Everything's tickety-boo" -> nghĩa là mọi thứ suôn sẻ, thuận lợi.

Ví dụ
Something might have gone wrong and a review had been arranged. So far, so normal. Guildford Borough Council had shown they were well aware of the Sir Humphrey tactic of arranging a long-winded enquiry which ends up with, “Nothing here. Don’t know what all the fuss was about. Everything’s tickety-boo.”

Boyd and partner DCI Rose Leslie (the mighty Ygritte from Game Of Thrones) ask Luther a lot of questions, to which his answers are, in order, “No”, “No” and “Nope”. Before leaving, Boyd goes off the record: “Hey. You OK?” Luther’s answer? “Everything’s tickety boo. Totally disco.” When he grunts a whole sentence, it’s worth waiting for.

I lived in a bubble where it wasn’t affecting me. Much of our generation were very fuckin’ apathetic about politics, and then Blair got voted in, and we all thought ‘Fine, we’ve got a Labor government, everything’s tickety boo, everybody’s got a job and it’s not too bad and we can go raving every weekend.’

"Wind-up merchant" nghĩa là gì?

"Wind-up merchant" = người buôn gió -> nghĩa là người đưa ra bình luận gây tranh cãi.

Ví dụ
The way Te'o is, he is a bit of a wind-up merchant, he likes to try and wind people up and obviously he had a few too many as well. Things then escalated.

“Hate-reading his verdicts (lời tuyên án, phán quyết) has been a favourite pursuit of rugby-loving Irish masochists (người bạo dâm) for the past decade and a half, ever since he marked himself out as a wind-up merchant of unusual promise when he referred to Ireland as ‘the smuggest rugby nation’ back during the 2002 Six Nations”, wrote Balls.ie in November 2016.

Fans of a certain age will be able to recall that starting XI with ease. They were the greatest. Pique at that time was a young defender with a thirst for knowledge, learning every game how to defend alongside one of the greats, no-nonsense Carles Puyol. Like him or not, Busquets was the best holding midfield player in the word. He was the one who broke up opposition counter attacks with clever fouls, he was the aggressor, the wind-up merchant, the man to perfectly compliment Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Even that is undermining how good a footballer Busquets was. There has never been a better midfield trio in world football.

"Wind your neck in" nghĩa là gì?

"Wind your neck in" = rụt cổ lại -> nghĩa là nhắc ai đó nên im lặng, đừng lớn tiếng về việc không liên quan tới mình hoặc không giúp ý cho vấn đề.

Ví dụ
Chris Evans, 54, was disgusted when his co-star Vassos Alexander, 46, revealed he had received abusive messages because he was called to have his coronavirus vaccination. The radio DJ told trolls to "wind their neck in" and "stop listening" to his show in defence of his co-star, who admitted he felt bad for being called despite his age.

"Vassos is doing nothing wrong, because this is what's happening in certain areas and districts, everyone who has needed to receive the vaccine first has received it and they simply cascade (chảy như thác) down the demographic and obviously where Vassos lives, they're way ahead of the other places!" He then snapped: "Get back in your box, wind your neck in - what's the matter with you guys?!"

Channel 4 host Steph McGovern, 37, blasted her co-star and podcast producer, Geoff, during a recent episode of Not Bad For A Monday, after she bluntly asked him to "wind his neck in" as he took over by interviewing their colleague Claire. The former BBC Breakfast presenter found herself branding her co-host a "k**b", after he supposedly asked too many questions.

"See the sights" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Raygar He on Unsplash

"See the sights" -> nghĩa là đến thăm những địa điểm đáng chú ý, thường là những nơi hút khách du lịch.

Ví dụ
So based on how much you walk, you'll get to virtually (gần như) walk through the app and see the sights of the trail. These are lovely little write-ups and photos giving you a window to a world far away. You can also see other walkers on the trail as well as upcoming milestones.

The Captain provides a fascinating and entertaining commentary (bài tường thuật) aboard this Coast Guard inspected vessel. Cruising the smooth waters of the Elizabeth River you will see the sights of one of the world’s busiest sea ports including the world’s largest naval (hải quân) base, home of the Atlantic Fleet (hạm đội): Destroyers, Guided Missile Cruisers, Submarines, Aircraft Carriers and more.

My parents periodically (định kỳ) had out of state friends visit us, and of course, we always took them to see the sights in Atlanta. In the late 1960s and 70s the sights included the Varsity, a trip to the airport to watch planes take off and land, and we would have been considered poor hosts if we did not take guests down to Tenth and Fourteenth Streets to gawk (trố mắt) at the hippies.

The weather forecast calls for a warm trend starting next week. Before then, maybe take a trip to see the sights around you. Perhaps it's time for a trip to Niagara Falls!

"What would Jesus do" nghĩa là gì?

"What would Jesus do" = Jesus sẽ làm gì -> nghĩa là câu nhắc nhở hãy làm những gì chúa sẽ làm (trong trường hợp đó).

Ví dụ
One student turned the tables on the school’s administrators response to the lighting of the Y, asking a variation of the famed “what would Jesus do” question.

In all these Lenten plans, I want the whole journey of Lent to be guided by St. Joseph. I am not suggesting using my Lent to do a long study (nghiên cứu) about St. Joseph and lose the Paschal preparation character of Lent. Rather, St. Joseph leads us to his Son; he will bring us Christ. Along the lines of that popular slogan, “W.W.J.D.” (What would Jesus do?), I want to know what “SJ” would do.

What kind of attention should we give? How about real friendship with no strings attached. What would Jesus do? is still a good question to ask ourselves.

Still, why is a column (mục) about “faith and values” speaking about politics? Well, to quote another bumper sticker, “What would Jesus do?” Jesus certainly spoke politically in words and actions.
