"Vice ring" nghĩa là gì?

Lewis Parsons on Unsplash

"Vice ring" có vice là trụy lạc, đồi bại, ring là nhóm con buôn, bọn gián điệp, ổ cướp... -> từ này nghĩa là ổ, nhóm tội phạm.

Ví dụ
The former detective never stood trial but the allegations (luận cứ) emerged when Nokes, the daughter of two respected solicitors (luật sư), stood trial more than three years ago. It was claimed Nokes, a keen horsewoman, set up a vice ring with Williams while working as a part-time escort.

In a separate case, Nik Ezanee said a 27-year-old foreign woman believed to be a victim of exploitation (mại dâm) by a vice ring was rescued by police opposite a four-star hotel here at 8pm on Monday.

He said acting on information obtained from an online application that offered sexual services police arrested a 49-year-old man whose role was to ferry women for clients of the vice ring.

His vice ring involved at least 22 prostitutes (gái mại dâm), 11 of whom were below the age of 18 at the time of the offences. Two girls were just 15. He also had commercial sex with the underage (dưới 18 tuổi) females before prostituting them, reasoning that they had to get used to the "whole feel" of dealing with customers, and he would give pointers and feedback.

"Meet head-on" nghĩa là gì?

Đối đầu với tình yêu :)) Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

"Meet head-on" -> nghĩa là đối đầu hay trực tiếp giải quyết việc gì.

Ví dụ
I share the Commissioner’s (đại biểu) view that the service is now built on solid (chắc chắn) foundations and that we have a model of practice in place that will enable us to meet head on the challenges that lie ahead.

Before she and Ryan meet head-on, Alice does her own digging (nghiên cứu) into the mystery of her erased memory and connection with Ocean. Them hitting it off was a problem, she finds, but the real kerfuffle (ồn ào) was an unforeseen love triangle including Safiyah. Her fondness (yêu mến) of Alice was why she trained the lost girl to be so dangerous in the first place.

Extremism (chủ nghĩa cực đoan) also presents a complex and unique challenge to the DOD, which the department must meet head-on working to permanently stamp out (dập tắt) extremism in the ranks.

What the NBA and GM Adam Silver have strived to achieve this year is consistency (tính kiên định). The NBA All-Star night was another hurdle (rào chắn) to overcome, and one they were determined to meet head on. Ultimately, they delivered.

Có lợi thì làm thôi

giải phóng nô lệ -> hệ thống tự do, chủ nghĩa tự do -> đổi mới sáng tạo trên quy mô lớn, kinh tế phát triển...
trích dẫn hôm nay… is a “little squib” (her description) that Deirdre McCloskey left recently in the Times (London) Respond portal and shared with me by e-mail:

Both Senator [Tom] Cotton [R-AR] and the 1619 Project have the economic history wrong. (Ironically, the erroneous economic premise they share was exactly that asserted in 1850 by Southern apologists: “we” all need slaves (nô lệ).)

Admittedly their claim that slavery was “a necessary evil upon which the union was built” echoes Lincoln’s noble sentiment in his Second Inaugural Address–that the bondsman’s labor 1619-1865 was what piled up US wealth. But it is false. If it were true, the numerous slave societies of olden times, such as Rome in 30 BCE or Norway in 700 CE, would have long ago experienced the Great Enrichment, of 3,000 percent per person for the poorest in Britain and Japan and many other non-slave places 1800 to the present. Likewise, by now Canada, say, with no slaves or much of any connection with slavery, would have remained very poor. Switzerland. New Zealand. Botswana.

What “built”” the US and every other country now prosperous was not stealing from poor people, or for that matter piling up routine investment, but massive innovation—cheap steel, electricity, vaccines, the modern university, mobility of labor and capital, the internal combustion engine, sewage treatment, artificial fertilizer, radio, radar, free trade, jet planes, the green revolution, containerization, computers, and above all the shamefully delayed but in the end thoroughly achieved liberation of slaves, poor men, women, colonial peoples, immigrants, free Blacks, gays. Under what Adam Smith called “the obvious and simple system of natural liberty”—in a word, liberalism– -people were permitted for the first time to have a go. It was their new liberty to innovate, not slavery or forced investment, that made billions rich, and will make the entire world rich. Or it will do so unless the 1619 Project and Senator Cotton, populists of left or right, with their Just-So understandings of history, kill it.

...When police discovered Geneus had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, he was taken out of the car and officers noticed a backpack (ba lô) on the front floorboard of the car.

Inside the backpack were a scale and two large bags of a white and brown substance.

Geneus said the items were "sugar and a bag of corn starch to bake a cake".

Police said both substances tested positive (dương tính) for ecstasy ((cảm xúc hay trạng thái) cực kỳ sung sướng hay hạnh phúc; xuất thần; nhập định) or molly and had a combined weight of 299.5 grams.

While at the jail, Geneus dropped a clear bag with a white powdered substance, that tested positive for meth.

Geneus was charged with trafficking (buôn lậu) phenethylamines.

"What in Sam Hill?" nghĩa là gì?

When mom isn't home. Mick Haupt on Unsplash

"What in Sam Hill?" có Sam Hill là địa ngục -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cái quái gì vậy? Cái quái gì đang diễn ra vậy?

Ví dụ
The drill sergeants knew something was up, but they could never figure (luận ra) it out. They’d circle (bao vây) him like wolves, sniffing (đánh hơi) at him and looking for a weakness, trying to find out just what in Sam Hill he was up to so they could punish him for it.

What in Sam Hill is going on between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks? After helping guide the team to the playoffs (again) last season, the quarterback — who’s easily a top-3 player in the league — reportedly isn’t too happy with the direction (hướng) the team’s going in. And while the initial (ban đầu) rumors were that Wilson was upset with the Seahawks’ decision to fire offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer this NFL offseason, it seems like tension runs much deeper than that.

At the end of the day, the stimulus (kích cầu) checks are on their way. There are plenty of resources keep you updated, and a bevy (nhóm) of useful articles to find out just what in Sam Hill is going on in the personal finance realm.

So what in Sam Hill happened 47 years ago? That, it turns out, was 1973. That March, a State Department history records, the Group of 10 inked an arrangement wherein six European countries “tied their currencies together and jointly floated against the U.S. dollar.”

"Yuk it up" nghĩa là gì?

Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

"Yuk it up" -> nghĩa là cư xử ngớ ngẩn, ngây ngô, đùa cợt.

Ví dụ
Because the way Nebraska -- yes, last-place Nebraska -- was dunking on the court and dancing on the sidelines, scoring at will and embarrassing Rutgers in every way imaginable, this game deserved that yuk-it-up treatment.

Robin Williams was one of our greatest comedic (hài kịch) actors, but “Patch Adams” was easily one of his worst films. In the comedy, he played a suicidal man who becomes a medical student and questions the traditional doctor-patient interactions. He’d rather yuk it up instead.

This wasn’t an accident. CNN made a deliberate (thận trọng) programming decision to have the two bros yuk it up on the air.  No doubt it was good for ratings.  But not for the public’s perception of journalistic fairness.

"The transition was pretty smooth from hockey," said Sestito during a telephone conversation earlier this week.  "The hardest adjustment was not being around my teammates.  We used to yuk it up in the locker room pretty good.  But, I got lucky with my second career. There are 12 guys at the firehouse, and everybody breaks everybody's chops."

"The mammon of unrighteousness" nghĩa là gì?

Christine Roy on Unsplash

"The mammon of unrighteousness" có mammon là tiền tài, unrighteousness là trái đạo đức -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tiền bạc, của cải có được qua việc làm trái phép, bất chính.

Ví dụ
John Adams also understood the broad nature of the term, writing with concern about “universal Idolatry (sùng bái) to the Mammon of Unrighteousness.” He recognized how all tyrants, from Julius Caesar to corrupt (thối nát) governors, exploited “the mad Idolatry of the People,” which inevitably turned into “the surest Instruments of their own Servitude.”

Having long felt the inadequacy (không tương xứng) of the provisions (cung cấp) made for the poor in our houses of worship, and knowing from sad experience that many devout (chân thành) believers and humble followers of the lowly Jesus are excluded from those courts, where the rich and poor should meet together, shut out from those holy services by the mammon of unrighteousness, from that very church which declares the widow's mite to be more acceptable in the sight of the Lord than the careless offerings of those who give of their 'abundance.'

A beloved brother asked during the bible study in our church what Jesus met in Luke 16:9 “And I say unto you, make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting (vĩnh hằng).”

"A no-go area" nghĩa là gì?

"A no-go area" = nơi không nên lui tới -> nghĩa là nơi rất nguy hiểm, nhất là bị kiểm soát bởi nhóm bạo động hay đang xảy ra xung đột quân sự.

Ví dụ
Creggan was a 'no go area', soldier tells inquest into mother’s 1971 shooting.

New powers to stop Ilkley Riverside becoming a 'no go area' could see people fined up to £100 for 'tombstoning' (xây mộ).

India and Japan will also be cooperating in India’s Andaman and Nicobar chain of islands, a no-go area for any other foreign nation.

Members were shown photos of crowds at the riverside, some drinking alcohol and lighting barbecues. They also saw photos of litter-strewn riverbanks and posts on Ilkley community Facebook pages by residents who described the riverside as a "no go area" during warm weather.

"Fit to bust" nghĩa là gì?

Alessio Lin on Unsplash

"Fit to bust" = khỏe tới ngực -> nghĩa là tràn đầy năng lượng, nhiệt huyết.

Ví dụ
A recent assessment (trả giá) of our household bookshelf inventory revealed that, even after casting off armfuls (đầy) to a free library, they were fit to bust. So I gave in, and threw some money at a Kindle Paperwhite, which is about the size of an old dime-store paperback.

The most exciting thing was when three American fighter bombers (máy bay tiêm kích ném bom) flew low over the camp and started to bomb the airfield near the camp. They then flew back over the camp doing a victory roll as they passed overhead. We cheered fit to bust, much to the annoyance of the guards! This happened twice and we realised that things were coming to a head.

Because, back when there was a real war – the invariably (vẫn luôn vậy) invoked World War Two, the world’s economies were allowed to go full tilt. To put it another way, they were borrowing, yes, but they were also producing fit to bust.

But no, our equivalent (tương đồng) to Xi opted to wade in playing fit to bust to the Home audience. Is the Anglo-sphere organising for a significant throwing of the gauntlet. Gareth Porter amongst serious others is convinced the Pentagon is organising for such.

đôi nam nữ người ukraine còng tay nhau trong ngày valentine, và suốt 3 tháng sau đó, để xem có giữ được mối quan hệ ko... :)

An on-again, off-again couple in Ukraine have pledged to strengthen their relationship (củng cố mối quan hệ) by handcuffing themselves together in a three-month experiment (thử nghiệm) that has reportedly grabbed the attention of their home country.

Alexandr Kudlay and Viktoria Pustovitova bound themselves together on Valentine’s Day in an unusual attempt (nỗ lực khác thường) to work through their issues.

"There's no fear of" nghĩa là gì?

"There's no fear of sth" = chẳng việc gì phải sợ cả -> nghĩa là không có rủi ro hay bất lợi khi làm điều gì.

Ví dụ
While Koo might not directly replace Twitter, become home to nationalistic voices, where there’s no fear of being censored (kiểm duyệt).

That’s a recent tweet from Animation Director at ILM, Hal Hickey. Take note of the fact it’s a very recent post, which suggests that there’s no fear of creating comparisons to the very same thing that purportedly got Gina Carano canned.

As we move into sunnier months, wide-legged trousers (quần ống rộng) offer the perfect balance between staying effortlessly (dễ dàng) cool while also feeling extremely comfortable. The best bit is that they’re cut to look elegantly laidback (thoải mái, không trịnh trọng) and purposely oversized, rather than ill-fitting and sloppy (luộm thuộm). So don’t panic (sợ hải): there’s no fear of looking like you’re wearing trousers that simply don’t fit.

"As near as dammit" nghĩa là gì?

"As near as dammit" -> nghĩa là gần như, hoàn toàn.

Ví dụ
Instead Sheffield United are condemned (lên án) to finish playing its own heartless take on Takeshi’s Castle, knowing that no matter how hard they try or whatever they do, the season is as near as dammit certain to end in relegation (chuyển xuống hạng thấp hơn).

It’s not the first time that surprise has been expressed on this site that Brian Eno regards himself as a non-musician, but he’s as near as, dammit. Here we have two excellent re-issues reminding us of what a creative giant he is, and how he has demonstrated this so many times, over the course of nearly fifty years.

But the reason I wanted to do the Extra Sessions is because I want people to have the pleasure of seeing me with my whole band doing these songs, these new songs not trimmed down (cắt bớt) versions but as near as dammit to the record as we could make them sound. This is the first time many of these songs will have been seen or heard.

A number of online websites suggest a frozen French fry-sized piece of potato (khoai tây) inserted (nhét vào) internally for 30 seconds is just the ticket (chính xác là những gì cần) for pile sufferers.

Because a raw potato is slightly acidic it apparently can relieve pain (giảm đau) and itching (ngứa) while its frozen state constricts blood vessels (làm co mạch máu) in the sensitive zone (vùng nhạy cảm).

..."The potatoes have astringent (làm se) properties and help relieve the pain and itchy sensation which usually happens with this condition, while the ice cold potato constricts the blood vessels, reduces the swelling and relieves your pain instantly."

Haemorrhoids (bệnh trĩ), or piles as they're commonly known, are swollen or bulging veins in the anus (hậu môn). They're similar to varicose (giãn tĩnh mạch) veins seen on legs but in a much more sensitive part of the body.

There are many causes (nguyên nhân) for haemorrhoids including pregnancy (mang thai) and straining (mệt mỏi, căng thẳng) during bowel movement (đi ỉa).

Long spells of sitting down (ngồi lâu), constipation (táo bón), a low fibre diet (chế độ ăn ít chất xơ) and obesity (béo phì) have also all been linked to causing piles.

"Never Eat Shredded Wheat" nghĩa là gì?

Jordan Madrid on Unsplash

"Never Eat Shredded Wheat" = đừng bao giờ ăn vụn lúa mì -> nghĩa là công thức ghi nhớ theo chiều kim đồng hồ các hướng Bắc, Đông, Nam, Tây (North, East, South, West).

Ví dụ
Never Eat Shredded Wheat. You know, the system many of us were taught as children as the best way to remember the compass (la bàn) points – right?

So because it gave us a right good laugh, and it's one of those taboo (điều cấm kỵ) subjects nobody ever seems to talk about, we thought we'd share some of our favourite Never Eat Shredded Wheat alternatives (thay thế).

As you may know, Kerr Hall is a large square building in the heart of Ryerson’s campus. Crowning the roof of Kerr Hall South, the Kerr Hall clock towers over Kerr Hall’s four wings, named after their respective cardinal (chủ yếu) directions. Every September, new students can be found mumbling (lẩm nhẩm) “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” while pointing and spinning, desperately attempting to figure out which wing of Kerr Hall they’re actually in.

Why does an updated map matter (quan trọng)? They’re in real-time showing how many bikes are at each station and how many the station can currently hold. So like in school when we learned “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” for North, East, South and West, let’s take a look.
