"Go into hock" nghĩa là gì?

Avery Evans on Unsplash

"Go into hock" -> nghĩa là rơi vào hoàn cảnh nợ nần.

Ví dụ
Tacklife is this crazy company that produces gear in a large number of do-it-yourself and power tool categories (danh mục). You would be excused for thinking that an off-brand like this makes a lot of junk, but you’d be wrong. Products like this P16 150 Watt Portable Battery are solid performers and won’t force you to go into hock to pick one up.

The cost overruns (vượt quá) etc. of the F35 is ridiculous, why should Canada go into hock for buying aircraft from the USA. The F-35 has not flown anywhere near the amount of hours the Gripen has.

“I tell you not to overextend (mở rộng) yourself, to rebuild—you go into hock for more,” he says, as Mike becomes increasingly frustrated. Knish lets his first two sentences sit in the air for a second to make sure that Mike fully feels their weight.

Atwood always made sure to do her due diligence (siêng năng) when it came to prioritizing her own spending, too. “I hate being in debt,” she says. “I always pay my credit card on time. I will go without rather than go into debt. I don’t go into hock over things I can’t pay for.”

"Hock a loogie" nghĩa là gì?

Annie Spratt on Unsplash

"Hock a loogie" -> nghĩa là ho và khạc đờm.

Ví dụ
For example, the other day someone told me they were gonna “hock a loogie” and I was quite concerned (quan tâm) as to what that meant.” Finally, I asked him how he likes American culture, and if he had any expectations before coming to the states.

“Cha-nuh-kaa,” is incorrect – there’s no cha-cha involved in Hanukkah. When pronouncing the holiday correctly, it should almost be like (pardon my French here) you’re trying to hock a loogie with a guttural (âm yết hầu), throaty “ch” sound.

Think that’s hyperbole (ngoa dụ)? Go try it this weekend. See what happens when you get in an altercation (cãi nhau) and hock a loogie. I’m sure MPD will understand.

The nut then attempted to hock a loogie at the victim (nạn nhân), but managed to hit another man instead, according to Lequidre, who said the hapless (rủi ro) bystander’s girlfriend had to talk him down from fighting the creep.

"Match wits with him" nghĩa là gì?

Rất kịch tính. Vlad Sargu on Unsplash

"Match wits with one" có match là thi đấu, wit là trí thông minh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đấu trí.

Ví dụ
The Slovenia international is a lynchpin presence within Diego Simeone's side and the Argentine superstar says it is a pleasure (vinh dự) to match wits with him.

In this latest batch (đợt), Taz stars in his first full-length Looney Tunes Cartoons short when he takes on Bugs Bunny in a Roman coliseum (đấu trường). If Bugs makes it out of the arena, there will be plenty of foes waiting to match wits with him including Elmer Fudd, a leprechaun and Cecil Turtle.

In a twist of fate, [she] ended up quarantining (cách ly) with Owen and T.K. during the pandemic, rekindling (thắp lại) a secret romance with Owen while she was at it... Gwyn is the only woman in Owen’s life who’s ever been able to match wits with him.

The player who has won the most matches at the end of two rounds advances (tiến tới) to the big-money Super Match, when he or she selects one of the six celebrities (nguời nổi tiếng) to match wits with them and where they can potentially win up to $25,000.

"Veg-out" nghĩa là gì?

"Veg-out" = làm cho hả, trút ra hết -> nghĩa là thư giãn, tận hưởng.

Ví dụ
Located in the tranquil Gated Bay Point Community, a small inlet to allow boats to pass by on its way out to sea seems incredibly relaxing. Of course, there's a pool and ample room outside for Meyers and Elle to veg out and play fetch with their dog, Koko.

Spend the night relishing the creature comforts of a home away from home at The Woods Farm of Jervis Bay. The cottage accommodation is ideal for families, with three bedrooms in each of the eight houses, plus a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge with a TV and Foxtel so you can really veg out on your last night in paradise. Oh, and there are plenty of farm animals around too!

That said, your boss isn’t wrong to think there’s some value in finding ways for your team to connect informally. There is value in that. The problem is the way he’s doing it — like making people feel obligated to show up and not noticing that you’re being excluded from much of the conversation. Implying that you can’t possibly have anything else you’d like to do with that time is particularly obnoxious (rất khó chịu, ghê tởm). As you point out, just because you’re stuck at home doesn’t mean you don’t have other demands on your time, and even if you didn’t, you’re still entitled to decide you’d rather veg out on your own than have to be “on” for a work call.

"A shot in the locker" nghĩa là gì?

Jan Laugesen on Unsplash

"A shot in the locker" = phát bắn trong phòng thay đồ -> nghĩa là cơ hội cuối cùng để làm, đạt được điều gì.

Ví dụ
Wouldn't be surprised if he has more, let's say treatment (điều trị) like he did last week. He took a shot in the locker room and came back and then played. He should be fine going forward. But yes, unlike that X-ray machine, I can actually tell you, they were cracked (nứt).

But there was one last shot in the locker. Just before Bush Sr handed over to Bill Clinton, he met Yeltsin to sign the Start II treaty, which Scowcroft had done so much to devise (di sản). It specified the elimination of all MIRV land-based missiles within a decade. These accumulated (ước lượng) moves to reduce nuclear instability will probably be Scowcroft’s most enduring legacy.

It may be that they think Peter is 55 (years old) and Michael is 45 and this is the one last shot in the locker for Peter but there is still time for Michael.

"You’re a keeper" nghĩa là gì?

"You’re a keeper" -> nghĩa là người rất được ưu ái, có bản tính tốt đẹp.

Ví dụ
"You're a keeper," she said. Good move, me! Zoey and I went to her sister Cappy's boyfriend's apartment and spent the night there.

If you’re a “sports fish,” a man is going to toss you back into the sea (dump you), but if you’re a “keeper,” he’s going to…eat you, I mean, marry you. His analogy doesn’t work perfectly, but his description of women does.

Think fast, what comes to mind when I say “Valentine’s Day”? For the fellas, it’s probably having to live off 2-minute noodles and tacos until the first post-V-Day payday. But hear me out, there are plenty of ways to prove you’re a keeper for cheaper - seriously! Nothing says “I love you” (and my budget) like a romantic picnic in your lounge room. Don’t have the luxury of a kid-free house? Dump the kids with nan and go have some sunset seltzers with your ‘S.O’ by the beach. And if you don’t have time to pack a basket, just grab dinner to-go from your fave local restaurant.

"So, sue me!" nghĩa là gì?

loly galina on Unsplash

"So, sue me!" = có giỏi thì kiện đi -> nghĩa là câu thách khi bị chỉ ra sai lầm.

Ví dụ
So yes, I’m guilty of the occasional listicle or silly alliteration (lặp lại) to remember things. But they work, so sue me. Building influence marketing campaigns, in my experience and practice, boils down to six steps.

The man found a magic lamp. A genie (thần đèn) popped from it and offered the man three wishes. The man’s first wish was that there would be no lawyers. “That’s it, you’re done,” said the genie. The man protested (phản đối) that he had two wishes coming. The genie replied, “So sue me.”

I know this sounds like I’m a satyromaniac or a crazy sexaholic, but I’m 51, and this is what I want if I’m going to invest the rest of my life in a marriage (hôn nhân). I don’t have the luxury of time and youth like you, Luke, but I can actually afford what I want in my old age, and I can demand it, so sue me!

I just learned that Fat Bear Week is a thing, and now Fat Bear Week is the only sport I care about. I’m not trying to say that the NFL, NBA, MLB et al don’t matter, it’s just more that they don’t have fat bears competing (tham gia) — so sue me.

"X ray eyes" nghĩa là gì?

"X ray eyes" = ánh mắt tia X -> nghĩa là có thể nhìn thấu, biết rõ nội tình vấn đề gì, thường dùng trong câu hỏi “have you got x-ray eyes”; 'có con mắt thứ 3 à?'.

Ví dụ
The dealer pulls a pair of kings and Austin loses. The lesson here is to hit on 5, and unless you have a pair of X-Ray eyes, never hit on hard 17.

“You won’t know that from just sitting at home and watching your stomach grow. Next thing, you go to get an ultrasound and your baby has passed away. We don’t have X-ray eyes unfortunately, so we can’t see the problems inside. The psychology behind that is insane because you start to think about what could be wrong with you and how you could let this happen. But we don’t have control over this condition while the child is still in the womb (tử cung, dạ con, lòng mẹ).”

“I can absolutely understand why an on-field umpire gets a good view of the catch inside the inner circle, but when it is out on the boundary, 50 metres away, there’s no way that the standing umpire can see whether Dawid Malan has caught that,” Atherton said. “So the soft signal for boundary catches is nonsense. You just send it upstairs and let the third umpire make his call. There’s no way that the standing umpire can see that: he has not got X-ray eyes from 50 yards away.” — TNS

"From the valley’s" nghĩa là gì?

"From the valley’s" = đến từ thung lũng -> nghĩa là những người đến từ nước Wales (nước có nhiều thung lũng).

Ví dụ
Because of her coronavirus infection, Selling’s lungs just weren’t able to take in enough oxygen for her and the babies, so the next day she was transferred to Community Regional Medical Center for a higher level of care. The team from the Valley’s only high risk antepartum center was standing by to help the intensive care team.

Ranking the valley’s top-25 spots figures. It might be saying a bit of something about the current state of the Diamondbacks that only two representatives from the valley’s MLB franchise make the list, and one of them isn’t even a player. The other, Madison Bumgarner, came in at #18, and is, for the most part, still a new, underperforming arrival.

The City of North Las Vegas is pleased to announce the continuation of its 11-week, online 2020 Fall Homegrown Virtual Concert Series, featuring live performances from the valley's best artists and local bands, streaming live from North Las Vegas' premiere entertainment venue, The Amp at Craig Ranch Regional Park.

"Stop faffing around" nghĩa là gì?

"Stop faffing around" -> nghĩa là đừng phí thời giờ vô ích, tập trung làm việc cần làm.

Ví dụ
We’ll see. Today’s rally — and ballot measure results in California — could be the push companies like Airbnb and DoorDash needed to stop faffing around with private filings.

We all love to faff, but being on the receiving end of a faffer can be extremely annoying. Picture the scene I mentioned above and now put yourself in the shoes of my poor boyfriend, who is standing at the door waiting for me. There is only so much he can take before he starts shouting, “Stop faffing around, we need to leave!” I rue the day I taught him that expression, but he’s not wrong. Faffing is annoying.

He argued that aircraft are the “safest place where people congregate” and he attacked Nphet claiming they “got it wrong” on care homes, meat factories and face masks. Mr Wilson also claimed: “We lost this summer due to Government policy failures”. He called on Mr Ryan to "stop faffing around" and implement the EU’s traffic light system of green, orange and red listed countries today adding: "we don't know what the delay is".

"On a whim" nghĩa là gì?

Mark Fletcher-Brown on Unsplash

"On a whim" -> nghĩa là ý chợt nảy ra, tùy hứng.

Ví dụ
The offering will still comprise (bao gồm) Luxury Escapes' tightly-curated holiday packages — but for the first time, they'll be available to take advantage of immediately and for up to seven days out from a getaway, for holidays on a whim.

But when Belz decided to spend more time at home on Kauai with her three children, she took a job interview at a local credit union (liên minh) on a whim — and found it was actually a perfect fit with her background.

Nearly 25 years ago, when Rolands Abermanis lived in New Orleans, he bought a pound of raw (thô) pumpkin seeds (hạt giống) on a whim. He stirred them with spices and baked them into what became a popular snack at parties.

As any soap fan knows, romantic pairings change on a whim, so the question of whether Nick will end up back with Leanne or give Natasha another chance is still up for debate.

"Roll her eyes" nghĩa là gì?

"Roll (one's) eyes" = đảo mắt -> nghĩa là biểu hiện của sự bực tức, khó chịu, thiếu kiên nhẫn, khinh bỉ.

Ví dụ
I just rolled my eyes as my dad told another one of his corny jokes.

Don't you roll your eyes at me, young lady! You will finish your homework this instant, or you can kiss your weekend goodbye!

The highly-respected immunologist (nhà nghiên cứu miễn dịch) looked to roll his eyes and suppress laughter as Trump lashed out at (chửi mắng như tát nước vào mặt) the State Department, describing them as the 'Deep State department'.

"Feel no pain" nghĩa là gì?

"Feel no pain" = không thấy đau -> nghĩa là say rượu, bia.

Ví dụ
He drank the whole thing, and he's feeling no pain.

Jonathan took me on a tour of the local pubs, and pretty soon I was feeling no pain.

After attending the year-end party, I felt no pain so I decided to leave my car and ask my friends to take it home.

"Not give houseroom" nghĩa là gì?

"Not give sb/sth houseroom" -> nghĩa là không muốn chứa ai/cái gì trong nhà.

Ví dụ
Some leaders should not be given house room in any western alliance (liên minh).

Personally, I feel that some of the paintings that people pay so much for are absolute rubbish. You know, I wouldn't give them house room.

While I admire his confidence in his own writing, by not giving criticisms houseroom, he's actually depriving himself of a valuable insight into how to refine his work.

"All my worldly gear" nghĩa là gì?

Đàn bò là tất cả tài sản của gia đình ông. Photo by Huseyin Kaya on Unsplash

"All one's worldly gear" có gear là đồ dùng, đồ đạc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tất cả của cải của ai.

Ví dụ
To pay off the bank's debt, Lee Byung-chul was forced to sell all his worldly gear, including land, the mill and the transport company he had built up over the years.

The custodian (người trông coi) of the temple said that this is an old story, happening very tragically for people in a village. Life is in peace, suddenly there are 12 bandits coming to destroy the house and take all their worldly gear.

The reservoirs (hồ chứa) of irrigation water (nước thủy lợi) and hydroelectricity (thuỷ điện) simultaneously spill over, making the downstream like a big water bag, filling the whole area. The water rose up to the roof, the water turned the road into a river, it swept away all our worldly gear: crops, buffaloes, cows, pigs and chickens.

"Redress the balance" nghĩa là gì?

Jon Flobrant on Unsplash

"Redress the balance" có redess là sửa lại -> cụm từ này nghĩa là khôi phục thế cân bằng.

Ví dụ
And that is what we must do. We need a cultural and social change in attitudes to redress the balance and that is what I believe all politicians must now work together to achieve (đạt được).

This budget presented an opportunity to start to redress the balance and councils will rightly be hugely disappointed by it and concerned at how this affects (ảnh hưởng) the recovery of communities, especially ones like ours hard hit by the worst effects of the pandemic.

The Central Banking Awards were set up to redress the balance – to highlight (nhấn mạnh) the outstanding performance and achievements of individuals and organizations within the central banking community.

Today had a very different feel. Today was the first day that the America's Cup could be won. Today was the chance for the Italians to redress the balance after a day in which they had lost two races after winning the starts and maintaining their advantage for the first few legs. Today was the day that Emirates Team New Zealand could take another step towards winning the Cup.

"Midlife crisis" nghĩa là gì?

Jon Tyson on Unsplash

"Midlife crisis" -> nghĩa là tình trạng lo lắng tuổi trung niên, khủng hoảng tuổi trung niên.

Ví dụ
Boris Johnson says he entered politics (chính trị) due to the "beginnings of a midlife crisis" in his mid-thirties. The prime minister, 56, said he chose to be an MP because he wanted to "contribute more".

Something’s changed in me. My lightness of being has gone. I think I’ve lost my zing (sức sống). Maybe I’m having a midlife-crisis: a belated (đến muộn) one, seven-twelfths through my life.

And though I couldn’t hide the thing from my neighbours, I’ve taken pains to explain to passersby (người qua đường) that this rounded hump (đống) of silver metal is very much not a midlife-crisis thing. Far from it. It’s a COVID thing — a recreational diversion financed with a year’s worth of cancelled boardgame junkets and ski vacations.

According to a national survey conducted in the United States, about one in four of the participants reported experiencing (trải qua) a midlife crisis. Often, the crisis is triggered by life-changing events like divorce, job loss, loss of a loved one, or relocation.
