"Relieve her feelings" nghĩa là gì?

"Relieve (one's) feelings" = làm dịu cảm xúc -> nghĩa là làm hay nói điều gì để trút bỏ tức giận, thất vọng.

Ví dụ
Whenever anxiety takes hold of me, I go out for a walk along the canal to relieve my feelings.

You may feel compelled to relieve your feelings of frustration by spanking your toddler, but it won't make you feel better, and it will teach them that violence is an acceptable solution to problems.

Keira Bell, was a patient at Tavistock and was prescribed (khám kê đơn) puberty (dậy thì) blockers aged 16 and testosterone a year later before undergoing a double mastectomy (phẫu thuật cắt bỏ ngực) at 20. She is clear that her underlying mental health problems were not addressed and that the treatment did not relieve her feelings of dysphoria (tình trạng cảm thấy khó chịu, không sung sướng).

"Shirk (one's) duty" có shirk là né tránh, duty là bổn phận, nhiệm vụ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là trốn tránh, bỏ bê nghĩa vụ, trách nhiệm.

Ví dụ
Instead, the Vice President chose to shirk his duty to preserve our democracy, and Congress was left with no choice but to impeach the 45th President once again.

Haunted (ám ảnh) by the memory of a rescue gone wrong, former pararescue (vận động viên nhảy dù) Orion Starr has no desire to join Hamilton Jones’s elite rescue team. But he also can’t shirk his duty when the call comes in to rescue three lost climbers on Denali in Alaska.

Give yourself time to grieve (đau buồn). After the passing of a loved one, there are often many arrangements to be made and others mourners (người đi đưa tang) to be supported and cared for. While no man wants to shirk his duty, it is important to allow time for yourself to grieve as well.

"Close as an oyster" nghĩa là gì?

Tommaso Cantelli on Unsplash

"Close as an oyster" = kín đáo như hàu -> nghĩa là người biết giữ bí mật.

Ví dụ
A lot of trouble has been caused by memoirs (hồi ký). Indiscreet (vô ý) revelations, that sort of thing. People who have been close as an oyster all their lives seem positively to relish (hứng thú) causing trouble when they themselves shall be comfortably dead.

Unexpectedly, Al puts Robin back on Tui's case, moreover, Johnno is forced to make a sad disclosure (phơi bày) as Jude is facing imminent death, while at the same time, the cryptic Jamie is as close as an oyster.

It would have been a waste of time, for my assistant could be as close as an oyster when he chose. Furthermore (hơn nữa), he had a dread of Court Martial, and I verily believe that if some of his foraging (tìm tòi) exploits had leaked out, he would have spent many long and weary years in military prisons.

"Go the whole hog" nghĩa là gì?

"Go the whole hog" -> nghĩa là làm việc gì triệt để, hoàn toàn, dứt điểm.

Ví dụ
Scott Morrison was gracious (tử tế) in defeat at the footy on Saturday but he didn’t go the whole hog when Eels players started egging him on.

"We wanted the people of Penarth to enjoy viewing the outside of the property (khu đất) as much as us and that's why we decided to go the whole hog. "When we had tough times (and there were many of them) we knew one day it would be a beautiful family space for us to fill, enjoy, and create wonderful memories."

“To his credit, the Treasurer said ‘no’ to the request by the member for Goldstein for an inquiry. But he needs to go the whole hog and rule this out,” he added.

After the deer damaged neighbours’ land, he admitted falsely claiming to nearby farmers that he was having the creatures rounded up (bắt giữ). A separate matter involving wild boars (lợn lòi) was even probed by the police though Mr S isn’t clear if they needed to go the whole hog.

"As quick as a dog can lick a dish" = nhanh như con chó liếm cái đĩa -> nghĩa là rất nhanh chóng.

Ví dụ
To them I say, " I'd bet my bottom dollar that you will love this book." I am sure that they will learn the expressions given in this book as quick as a dog can lick a dish because the author clearly explained the definitions for each expression and provided example sentences that show how theses expressions are used.

Truffle (nấm cục) and mushroom risotto, All about that seabass, Salmon ahoy, Black quinoa kale and roasted sweet potato, Grilled steak with chargrilled artichokes (a ti sô), Sweet potato fries with sriracha mayo are all the dishes that we ordered. Every single dish was yummy, delicious, fresh, tasty and we finished our dinner as quick as a dog can lick a dish.

On the gendarme, Roland climbed like a bloodhound, hot on the scent, sniffing around for the best way. He was relentless, like a dog with a bone, jumping from hold to hold, following His Master’s Voice. I kept bird-dogging him, climbing simultaneously (liên tiếp) to make sure we moved as quick as a dog can lick a dish. Fortunately, all the moves were well within our grade, so there was no need for hangdogging.

"Puppies and rainbows" = cún con và cầu vồng -> nghĩa là hoàn hảo, lý tưởng (hàm ý mỉa mai).

Ví dụ
But just like being a parent isn’t all puppies and rainbows, Pironkova’s first run to the US Open quarterfinals hasn’t been all smiles and high fives, either.

But Mr. Biden’s digital strategy wasn’t all puppies and rainbows. The campaign also joined ranks with a number of popular left-wing Facebook pages, many of which are known for putting out aggressive anti-Trump content.

"It was so exciting to work in the space of this idea of chaos magic, because creation is the most feminine act," Schaeffer explains. "So the idea is that when she breaks, when she detonates (làm nổ), what she does is create, she doesn't destroy. She's not without sin—she takes a bunch of people hostage and traumatizes them, so it's not all puppies and rainbows, but everything is about creation and making. And that felt very resonant (vang dội) to me."

"Pull out all the stops" nghĩa là gì?

Buồn luôn 😞😞😞 Photo courtesy: Markytyz

"Pull out all the stops" -> nghĩa là nỗ lực hết mình để đạt được mong muốn.

Ví dụ
Pull out all the stops and concentrate on what you want to achieve this year. Settling into a new lifestyle will encourage personal growth, new friendships and a chance to rejigger (sắp xếp lại) your resume. Change is all around you, and the work you've done will pay off.

That context made United’s return to JFK on Sunday all the more interesting. Would the carrier keep with the subdued tone that has reflected the state of the airline industry over the past year? Or would United pull out all the stops to drum up (quảng cáo rùm beng để lôi kéo khách hàng) excitement over its reentry into the fiercely competitive JFK-California market?

“That financial markets did not completely break down was primarily due to the actions of one central bank, the US Federal Reserve,” the publication stated. “Under the stewardship (cương vị quản lý) of its chairman, Jerome Powell, the Fed acted rapidly and boldly to avert a meltdown – not just in the US, but in markets across the world. The Fed pulled out all the stops in its efforts to shore up US dollar liquidity (thanh khoản). And it did so extraordinarily quickly.”

"What was your first clue?" nghĩa là gì?

"What was your first clue?" = manh mối đầu tiên là gì? -> là câu hỏi tu từ dùng để chỉ ra sự thật hiển nhiên cho một kết luận.

Ví dụ
Frank you’re a regular Sherlock Holmes! Tell me, what was your first clue? The giant “transit complex” sign in the photo? The lack of flames? Wait, wait… was it the “file photo” written in bold font?

What was your first clue? You've stated the obvious. Now what? Will the ones responsible be held accountable, or be swept under the rug and forgot about.

“We were on the 12th tee, the pin was back right. He hit a 4-iron, this high cut about a yard-and-a-half that never left the flag and stopped about 5 feet away,” O’Meara said. “Butch said, ‘Good swing.’ And I said, ‘Really? Now I know why you’re such a great teacher. What was your first clue, that he hasn’t missed a shot all day?’ We were needling each other pretty good.”

"The first of never" nghĩa là gì?

"The first of never" = ngày đầu tiên của điều chưa bao giờ xảy ra -> nghĩa là ngày mà điều chưa từng xảy ra, rất khó có khả năng xảy ra, cuối cùng lại đến.

Ví dụ
No, and I don't give a crap, BOO. The day I take instructions from the likes of you will be the first of never.

How about the first of never? Thinking has shifted from containing this new coronavirus to merely doing what we can to lessen the harm of it.

At the beginning of the year, we had only the first two quarters of CPA exam score release dates, with the second half of the year sort of TBD. And then things happened that made it seem as though CPA exam candidates might not be able to test until the first of never, but thankfully all that is slowly but surely improving. Candidates are still reporting difficulty securing their desired testing dates and locations in some instances but that’s to be expected, and I wouldn’t bank on that changing anytime soon. But hey, I was able to buy toilet paper on Amazon for the first time in three months the other day so if that’s working, maybe the rest will be figured out soon as well.

"See you in hell first" nghĩa là gì?

"See somebody in hell first" = gặp ở địa ngục trước -> nghĩa là từ chối không làm, không đồng ý điều gì.

Ví dụ
KW "It ain't going to happen. I'll see you in hell first!"
Man: "Keith hold on a minute before you have a heart attack." KW "I ain't going to have a heart attack but I ain't gonna have these b**** lying on me."

McKellar told his senior colleague he would accompany him to the White House so that Shields could thank both Wilson and Tumulty. To McKellar’s utter astonishment, Shields barked he would “see them in Hell first.” McKellar sadly recalled, “From that time on he fought the President and the President’s League of Nations, just as the President had predicted…” McKellar confessed, “I was tremendously embarrassed.”

"Not if I see you first" nghĩa là gì?

"Not if I see you first" = không, nếu tôi thấy bạn trước -> nghĩa là sẽ tránh mặt, cố tình không nói chuyện nếu tình cờ thấy bạn trước. Cách đáp lại hài hước cho câu tạm biệt "see you later," "see you soon," hẹn gặp lại...

Ví dụ
“I’m like, ‘Oh my god! Holy crap! David Bowie just told me to fuck off!’” Grohl recalled. “So I emailed back — and I hadn’t seen him since his birthday party at Madison Square Garden — I said, ‘Well, I guess I’ll see you in another 15 years.’ And he goes, ‘Not if I see you first.’”

"Hello dear, I'm Agnes, you're neighbor to the right." - "Not if I see you first, hon." In the first episode, Agatha disguised as Agnes comes over to greet Wanda and Vision as the new neighbors in town. After Wanda returns Agatha to her Agnes persona, she says she'll see Wanda again in her typical cheery, neighborly way.

Probably not. Whenever a Marvel character ends an interaction with “I’ll be seeing you,” it’s a promise that’s typically kept. At the end of WandaVision, Wanda traps the powerful Agatha Harkness in her sitcomish Agnes form, leaving her in Westview. Agatha feels like too strong a character to leave behind forever, and it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see her as soon as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, would it? After all, her follow-up to Wanda’s line feels important too: “Not if I see you first.”

Merry, a former Queen’s Royal College student, ended the day with a score of 71. Ben Martin is on his heels with 73 and top national player Chris Richards Snr is third after ending day one with 76. Hannah Keating (2019-present; .759 [22-7])… Like Whitten, Keating too had a phenomenal freshman campaign as the pair achieved AVCA Top Flight Status, going 17-5 from the top spot. In fact, in her two seasons at Morehead State, Keating has exclusively appeared in the first flight, accruing a 22-7 career record. She also helped set program single-season records for wins by a freshman, individual, and pairing in 2019. In a shortened 2020 campaign, she and partner Trinity Miller collected five victories from the primary flight, establishing Keating as the winningest player from the first flight in program history. With 22 victories, she ranks third in career victories for an individual at Morehead State.

Ví dụ
While Hanwha Q-Cells' patent infringement (sự vi phạm, xâm phạm rõ ràng) suit was largely thrown out in the USA, the judges at the Düsseldorf district court ruled in the first instance in favor of the South Korean photovoltaic manufacturer (nhà sản xuất quang điện có lớp chặn). Jinko Solar, REC and Longi Solar appealed the judgment. Longi said, at the beginning of the year, that the appeal hearing is scheduled for April 22, 2021. Hanwha Q-Cells has now also confirmed that the appeal will probably take place in April, before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

"Anyone experiencing health issues from the Romano's pizza factory fire in Hillsborough should contact their general practice team for advice, in the first instance," Dr Pink says. Up to 11 fire crews made up of about 50 firefighters have been battling the blaze since and a fire investigator has been sent to the site. No one appears to have been inside the building when the fire broke out and there are no reports of injuries.

Taylors is also a member of the prestigious (có uy tín) First Families of Wine group which also includes Tyrrell’s Wine, Henschke Wines and Brown Brothers. It is a loose collective of 10 family-owned companies with long histories of several generations of family ownership. Mr Taylor late last year described the sudden and hefty tariffs (thuế nặng) on wine as “outrageous”. Taylors Wines was one of those hit with the highest provisional tariff, a whopping 212 per cent in the first instance. “It was quite a shock. It was really outrageous,” (thái quá, tàn bạo) he said at the time.

"Hindside first" -> nghĩa là đi lùi.

Ví dụ
"We all need to continue working together to make sure that doesn't happen because nobody wants to go hindside first.

The current thinking is to try to make it as real as possible and then come hindside first to make it simpler to find the right mechanics.

“Coronavirus still poses a threat to public health, and the last thing we want now is to move hindside first or face an increase in infections which restricts us further.
