"Look like death warmed over" nghĩa là gì?

Trông tôi vẫn đẹp trai chứ? Photo by Mikhail Rakityanskiy on Unsplash
"Look/feel like death warmed over/up" = trông ốm yếu, kiệt sức.

Ví dụ
When I was young and really WAS looking good, no one ever told me I was looking good. Now that I'm old and look like death warmed over, everyone's telling me how good I look.

The odd (kỳ lạ) couple were now separated by security guards. Jones had the same expression as before while Cairney, now in a wheelchair (xe lăn) and looking like death warmed up, stared right at me as I gave my evidence (chứng cớ).

The reason for this was simple. Kennedy looked tanned (cháy nắng), rested, and ready, in the words of one journalist, like “a bronzed warrior (chiến binh bằng đồng).” By contrast, Nixon looked like warmed-over death. His “Lazy Shave” (lười cạo râu) makeup exposed his beard growth.

My hair was in a muddy (xám xịt) brown, deep depressive funk (trầm buồn). I looked like I was back in eighth grade, minus the clear braces (niềng răng trong) and six weeks of mono. I looked like death warmed over, and there wasn’t enough magenta (đỏ sậm) lipstick in the world to hide how I was feeling inside.

"Whip her ass" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Charl Durand

"Whip her ass" = Quất roi vào mông ai nên nghĩa bóng là đánh, đập ai đó hoặc vật gì một cách dã man và quyết liệt.

Ví dụ
“I reckon (cho là, nghĩ là) she’ll whip everyone’s ass! She’s fit (khỏe), she’s smart, she’s successful,” he said. And that’s when Jonathan revealed (tiết lộ) the weird item (vật lạ) that Janine packed in her bags (gói trong túi) to bring to the island!

"I am so excited for you to whip my ass into shape (biến dạng)," says co-host (đồng tổ chức) Justin Sylvester. And he has reason to be! The workout instructor (người hướng dẫn thể hình) —who calls her time on Khloe Kardashian's transformation series "super inspiring" and credits the KUWTK star for creating "a vehicle that affects so many people on such a different level than just physical"—isn't just here for chit-chat (tán gẫu).

Post-match (sau trận đấu), JD Drake comes down and gets on the mic. First of all he gives credit where it’s due and thanks Babatunde for saving him in Detroit, but he takes issue with (tranh cãi với) the suggestion that there was fear in his eyes, but he fears no man. Because either he’s gonna whip their ass or take an ass-whipping trying and he bids (công bố, mời chào) the big man good luck trying to take the title (dành ngôi vị) from him.

"Warm the cockles of your heart" nghĩa là gì?

"Warm the cockles of one's heart" có nghĩa khiến ai đó cảm thấy hạnh phúc và ấm áp. "Cockle" là vỏ sò, tượng trưng cho phần sâu sắc nhất trong con người luôn có một vỏ bọc mà người khác khó chạm vào.

Ví dụ
When it comes to meals to warm the cockles of your heart you just can't go pasta ragout (mỳ ống ra gu).

The 'Chhapaak' actress recently posted a picture of herself and Ranveer Singh along with a cute note which will warm the cockles of your hearts.

Their presence (sự hiện diện) alone should ensure a bumper (bội thu) opening at the box office. And when your favourite people are seen on screen doing things that would warm the cockles of your heart, there’s no stopping the movie.

Does it not warm the cockles of your heart to know that Killswitch Engage and Howard Jones are still on good terms (mối quan hệ tốt ) despite parting ways (tan rã) in 2012? I mean, sure, plenty of former bandmates (thành viên) say everything is amicable (hòa thuận), but a lot of them are also totally fuck of shit.

"Stack the deck" nghĩa là gì?

"Stack the deck" nghĩa là xếp bài một cách gian lận để vụ lợi hoặc gây ra sự thiệt thòi và không công bằng cho người khác.

Ví dụ
A labour leader says unions (công đoàn) would oppose (phản đối) a change to arbitration criteria (tiêu chuẩn trọng tài, người phân xử). "This would stack the deck against workers and favour employers," Danny Légère, president of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (liên đoàn lao động), said in an interview.

One thing is for sure: Acosta definitely knows how to stack the deck in his own favor (thiên vị, sự chiếu cố). Asked about the possibility of Trump firing (sa thải) him, the secretary put on a master class in Trump toadyship (bợ đỡ, liếm gót, xu nịnh), emphasizing (nhấn mạnh) again and again how ready he was to do whatever his incredible boss required of him.

Business groups (các tập đoàn kinh doanh) have made it clear they don’t like House Bill 3427, a hidden sales tax, and want to put it a vote of the people. Worried that a vote could spell trouble (báo hiệu rắc rối) for the $1 billion a year revenue generator (sự phát sinh doanh thu), legislative Democrats (đảng Dân chủ lập pháp) got busy this week stacking the deck against the ballot (sự bỏ phiếu) effort.

"Housewarming party" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alasdair Elmes on Unsplash
"Housewarming party" = tiệc mừng tân gia.

Ví dụ
A housewarming party in Texas ends with a man fatally (chết người) shooting his sister and wounding (làm thương) three others before killing himself.

Music Legend Rick James' daughter Ty James reportedly brought property (nhà) for $2 million and had a housewarming party that upset her new neighbors.

Artists (nghệ sỹ), media personalities and socialites attended the Sheebah Karungi housewarming party that kicked off (bắt đầu) at 4:00 pm. Among them was Ykee Benda, Winnie Nwagi, Iryn Namubiru, Vinka, Kabako, Leila Kayondo, comedian (diễn viên hài) Salvador and his wife.

At a friend’s housewarming party, I picked up a cast-iron pan (chảo gang) from the top of his refrigerator (tủ lạnh). Being shorter than said fridge, I could not see that the cast-iron pan was filled to the brim (đầy miệng) with oil. I ended up spilling it all over myself and his floor.

"Square your shoulders" nghĩa là gì?

Can đảm lên nào. Photo by Kristopher Roller

"Square your shoulders" = Làm cho vai mình ngang, kênh ngang vai lên nên câu này có nghĩa là chuẩn bị sẵn sàng để đương đầu và đối mặt với những khó khăn hay thách thức và thể hiện được sự can đảm và ý chí của mình.

Ví dụ
When it comes to skiing (trượt tuyết) on a mountain, think of your upper and lower body as separate. Keep squaring your shoulders and facing down the hill, and engage your core (tiến hành mục đích).

It’s also important to note (lưu ý, ghi chú) that Patriarchy (chế độ gia trưởng) Chicken isn’t about anger. Of course, you can put your head down, square your shoulders, glower (trừng mắt nhìn), and power through. But in my opinion, the best way to play the game is cheerfully. Smile! Make eye contact! But never, ever give way.

It is time to call out the purveyors (người cung ứng/cung cấp hàng hóa) of contempt (sự không tuân theo) and profiteers (kẻ trục lợi) of hate who regularly shrug their shoulders (nhún vai) with a “it's not my problem” attitude. It is also time to call on citizens (công dân) to no longer join the slouching-shoulder (vai thõng xuống) crowd who are increasingly OK with a culture of contempt. Government is not, cannot and should not be big enough to solve these issues. We must square our shoulders and do it together.

"Beyond the call of duty" = Vượt trội hơn cả tiếng gọi của trách nhiệm nghĩa là vượt hơn ngoài mong đợi cho công việc, vị trí và vai trò của ai đó đang đảm nhận.

Ví dụ
"Once again we have received an overwhelming number (con số quả tải) of nominations (người ra ứng cử) across the 13 categories (phân loại) and it has been humbling to read the ways in which so many Islanders go above and beyond the call of duty to help others".

Representatives (những người đại biểu) from Harlequins, Sale Sharks and Wasps have been singled out (được lựa chọn ra) for going above and beyond the call of duty by being shortlisted (đưa vào danh sách ngắn hơn) for a prestigious gong (huy chương danh giá) at the Premiership Rugby Parliamentary Community Awards.

Going beyond the call of duty and showing utmost sincerity (vô cùng chân thật) towards performing his duties (trước việc thực hiện trách nhiệm của anh ta), a cop (cảnh sát, mật thám) in Bengaluru covered an open manhole (lỗ cống) without waiting for the civic authorities (chính quyền địa phương, khu vực) to do their job. The police constable (đốc hiệu, nguyên soái) also received laurels (vinh dự, ving quang, vòng nguyệt quế) from his seniors (lãnh đạo cấp cao) for his presence of mind (sự nhanh trí của anh ta) and averting (ngăn chặn) a possible accident.

"A piece of the pie" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Loup on Unsplash

"A piece of the pie" = "A slice of the pie" = một mẩu của chiếc bánh -> ý chỉ một phần chia trong một khoản, một điều gì đó. Cụm này thường được dùng phổ biến trong kinh doanh.

Ví dụ
Their piece of the pie could in reality be as much as 55% when all is accounted for.

The Asia-Pacific will possess (sở hữu) for more piece of the pie in following years, particularly in China, additionally (thêm nữa) quickly developing India and Southeast Asia districts.

The report says that smoke from these businesses accounts for three per cent of the fine particle (hạt) pollution in the city, a comparatively (tương đối) low piece of the pie compared to transport and industry players.

As mentioned earlier, the reason why The Office is leaving Netflix in 2021 is because NBC will debut its own streaming service, which is currently unnamed, in early 2020. Like many other content creators (nhà sáng tạo nội dung) out there, NBC sees the potential (tiềm năng) in unleashing (ra mắt) its own streaming service, much like CBS All Access, and the network wants a piece of the pie.
