"Rack my brain" nghĩa là gì?

Thành ngữ 'rack one’s brain' có động từ to rack có nghĩa là làm ai đó/cái gì chịu đau đớn, giày vò. Còn brain có nghĩa là bộ óc. Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là nặn óc để cố nhớ một chuyện gì hay để giải quyết một vấn đề gì.
Ví dụ
“Just yesterday I was talking to a guest before a radio interview who told me about an organization. Now I’d like to contact them but the name has escaped me. Ever since yesterday I’ve been racking my brain (nghĩ nát óc), but I still can’t remember the name of the company that my guest mentioned.”
“When my brother Michael went to pick up his girlfriend, there was a note on the door. She wrote that she didn’t want to see him anymore. How could their relationship be over? He’s been racking his brain (nặn óc) trying to recall everything he’s done and said lately. Whatever happened, he deserves some kind of explanation.”
