"Apprentice him to" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ kể con nghe nhé Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

'Apprentice one to' = cho học việc, học nghề.

Ví dụ
They require their prospective teachers to spend at a least a year mastering the craft of teaching before getting licensed, and then typically apprentice them to a master teacher for a year after they've been hired for their first job.

“I apprenticed myself to great black singers, famous and not, and started trying to figure out what the techniques were, what this was all about, without, as a friend of mine said, ‘singing in blackface.’ The trick is not to imitate black dialect. There’s something else going on, and the people who’ve figured this out you can kind of count on one hand, as far as white singers crossing over.”

The show’s subtitle, “The Slave of Duty” gives a good hint to the social conventions being satirized (châm biếm, chế nhạo). At a young age, Frederic was apprenticed to a band of pirates — mistakenly. As his longtime nursemaid (cô bảo mẫu) confesses, her instructions were to apprentice him to a “pilot,” who leads ships into harbor, rather than a marauding troop (toán cướp), to serve his term to his 21st birthday.

"Have bats in your belfry" nghĩa là gì?

Đúng là dị giống nhau mới chơi được với nhau. Photo by Ekaterina Novitskaya on Unsplash

"Have bats in one's belfry" = có con dơi trong tháp chuông -> (ý kiến, suy nghĩ) gàn, dở hơi. Dơi thường bay loạn xạ trong bóng tối, khó để đoán được đường bay, liên tưởng tới những suy nghĩ bay trong đầu chúng ta.

Ví dụ
They smile, indulging (nuông chiều) their kooky (kỳ lạ) friends, and I can't help imagining they are thinking: “These two have bats in the belfry; someone simply dropped it and didn't pick it up!"

China who wouldn’t admit that it had an outbreak (bùng phát) for over two weeks now is telling people that it has stopped the spread of COVID-19 and, that the US planted (gieo rắc) the virus in China because, that’s how the US operates. They sound like they have bats in the belfry.

By now, Messi had made it clear: he ain't entertaining (mua vui) any tomfoolery (hành động ngớ ngẩn) from anyone. Not certainly from Ramos. He may have bats in his belfry but the Barcelona ace was exasperated (cáu tiết) enough, and he made it crystal clear when he was subject to another nasty foul (pha phạm lỗi khó chịu) by the Spaniard as Messi got completely consumed (phá hủy) by rage (cơn thịnh nộ).

"Diligence is the mother of good luck" nghĩa là gì?

Làm việc chăm chỉ sẽ được thăng chức thôi Photo by Loe Moshkovska from Pexels

'Diligence is the mother of good luck' = làm việc chăm chỉ sẽ nhận lại kết quả tốt, thành công và sự may mắn.

Ví dụ
If diligence is the mother of good luck, it makes sense that good karma (quy luật nhân quả) succeeds right action.

Best advice he's ever received: "A person does not become whole until he or she becomes part of something bigger than him or herself, and diligence is the mother of good luck. One must find their passion and go all in, and persistence (kiên trì) is key to all success."

“Diligence is the mother of good luck”: no successful entrepreneur should ever start a new venture without carrying out his ground work. With the assistance of competent professionals in the field, the potential buyer will be in a position to embark on the desired course with the peace of mind that the undertaking is a sound one and that no stone was left unturned (tìm mọi khả năng) in anticipation of the deal.

"Be at bat" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Chris Chow on Unsplash

"(Be) at bat" (từ lóng) nghĩa là trao đổi vị trí, cơ hội/giữ một vị trí quan trọng (đánh bóng chày). Từ "bat" là cái gậy bóng chày, "batter" là người đập bóng (một vị trí quan trọng).

Ví dụ
We got some wicked injuries (chấn thương nguy hiểm) when we would be at bat and hit the ball, only to trip and fall when we started running. I guess you could say we learned as we went along! Usually we have real baseballs.

What you really need to do, though, is stay in the game by watching and looking forward to your next at-bat. You might not be in the lineup (đội hình) that day, but you have to keep alert (cảnh giác) by knowing the count and being ready should you be called upon.

The Yankees' first-round (vòng đầu) pick in the 2019 draft entered for Gary Sanchez in the eighth inning (hiệp) and nearly collected a hit on a foul ball (bóng ngoài biên) down the left-field line before grounding out to shortstop (vị trí chặn ngắn) in his only at-bat. Volpe is 18 years old and hit .215 in rookie (tân binh) ball last year, so he is likely years away from being seriously considered for the big-league roster (đội hình).

"Go to bat for (someone)" nghĩa là giúp đỡ, ủng hộ ai. Cụm từ xuất phát trong môn bóng cháy, khi ai đó đến thay vị trí của "batter" (người đập bóng) khác, đồng nghĩa với việc giúp đội của mình. "Go to the bat with someone" thì có nghĩa là thi đấu với ai.

Ví dụ
“I want to go to bat for our children, our fire service, our law enforcement (thực thi pháp luật), our EMS, our teachers, our farmers, our small businesses (doanh nghiệp), our communities (cộng đồng),” he said. “But most of all I want to give you, the taxpayer (người đóng thuế), the same voice in our county as anyone else.”

Milwaukee Brewers television announcer (phát thanh viên) Brian Anderson is going to bat for freelancers (làm việc tự do) — including on-air (phát sóng) talent Craig Coshun, Dario Melendez and Jerry Augustine — at Fox Sports Wisconsin after the network informed them they were being “released” (phát hành) during the Major League Baseball shutdown.

On Wednesday, it was reported that New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine would allow its fourth-year students to graduate early. Other medical schools (trường y) in the country should follow suit. These are students who are well trained (đào tạo bài bản), have already taken care of patients (bệnh nhân), are itching (mong muốn) to go to bat for patients and can relieve many of the pressures (áp lực) that are about to crush our hospital systems (hệ thống bệnh viện).

"Bat a thousand" nghĩa là gì?

Thật hiếm mà gặp được nữ huấn luyện viên tài giỏi như vậy. Photo by Jeffrey F Lin on Unsplash

"Bat a thousand" hoặc "be batting one thousand" nghĩa là rất thành công, hoàn hảo. Trong bóng chày, "bat a thousand" là đánh được bóng khi ở vị trí đón bóng.

Ví dụ
Even the best players do not win every game or bat a thousand. There will be disappointments (thất vọng) during the coronavirus crisis (khủng hoảng).

“Very few coaches (huấn luyện viên) in any professional sport are batting a thousand in terms of winning league championships (chức vô địch giải đấu), and she’s one of them,” Paulson said of Parlow Cone, who won the NWSL title (danh hiệu) in 2012 and left on her own volition (tự nguyện) to move back to North Carolina with her husband, John Cone.

IP Corporation utilizes (tận dụng) several workforce development strategies (chiến lược phát triển lực lượng lao động), from CCT training for employees (nhân viên) at all levels to internships (thực tập) for college students at its four factories. “We don’t bat a thousand, but we have several employees who went through our intern program and are now on our research (nghiên cứu) and development staff,” says Stephens.

"In a whirl" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Christina Morillo on Pexels

"In a whirl" = trong cơn lốc -> nghĩa là trong trạng thái bối rối, đầu óc quay cuồng.

Ví dụ
I guess my mind was in a whirl. I think, without realizing (nhận ra) it, I kind of went into bear-encounter mode. … The last thing he said was he was with the Independent Soldiers and he was just a guy who had to follow orders.

My mind was in a whirl of unknown fears, doubts (nghi ngờ), and ominous (điềm báo) signals. Images of my own dances on prestigious (có uy tín) stages of national theatres and opera houses kept flashing before my eyes. Was all this just a bad dream?

Still, he admitted that his mind was in a whirl when Vana fled Singapore and there were still questions in his mind that needed clarification (làm rõ) from the Czech. "I've got nothing against him [Vana], but unfortunately, he put me in a little bit of a bother [when he fled Singapore]," Abbas said in an interview with Yahoo! Singapore recently.

"Give it a whirl" nghĩa là gì?

Thử một lần cho biết. Photo by: Icons8 Team on Unsplash

"Give it a whirl" -> nghĩa là thử làm việc gì lần đầu.

Ví dụ
Taylor said he didn't take it that seriously at first, quipping that he could barely handle six or seven performers who might show up to perform at an open mic, let alone the whole internet. But after some coaxing (dỗ ngọt) from his girlfriend, Tara Ambrosine, he decided to give it a whirl.

"We were going to Los Angeles for my son's college graduation (tốt nghiệp) and we were looking for things to do. We saw it pop up, free tickets to The Price Is Right, so we figured let's give it a whirl," said Johnson City resident and star of the show Graham MacDonald.

We decided to give it a whirl to see what happens, and the response was overwhelming (choáng ngợp), so we decided to continue on as long as we can with it.

"Stark raving mad" nghĩa là gì?

Đây là tôi mỗi khi nhận lương Photo by Bruno Thethe from Pexels

'Stark raving mad' = điên khùng, mất kiểm soát, đặc biệt dùng khi nói về sự tức giận hoặc thích thú.

Ví dụ
I have some suggestions to keep the children happy and the child in you from going stark raving mad.

A good friend, who also lives alone, says she’ll go stark raving mad if this lasts long because she absolutely must get out. Many people are in a similar state of mind. The mere thought of being forced to stay in makes them slightly crazy.

Americans are now suffering from something far worse than COVID-19. ‘Corona-chosis,’ a mental disorder of epic proportions, is a clear and present danger to our economy and our way of life. This new, collective insanity is wrecking businesses and putting millions of Americans out of work. It is a far greater threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness than any virus or disease could ever be. It must be stopped before it drives all of us stark raving mad.

"Gay as a three-dollar bill" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Chrysostomos Galathris from Pexels

"(As) gay/queer as a three-dollar bill" = đồng tính/ kỳ quặc như tờ hóa đơn 3 đô -> miệt thị người nào đồng tính, đồng bóng, tính cách kỳ lạ.

Ví dụ
That and a trip to New York, where she got to see a bunch of coffee shops that were “queer as a three-dollar bill,” convinced (thuyết phục) her at age 18 to join several of her friends in a move to the Big Apple.

He can no longer answer for himself, but what we DO know is that he never married, his didn't have children, and he leaves behind a longtime male companion (người bầu bạn). And in terms of persona (nhân cách) he was just as queer as a three dollar bill. There's nothing demeaning (hạ thấp mình) about saying that we was, for all intents (ý định) and purposes (mục đích), GAY.

With Sutton, he recalls (nhớ lại), it was pure magic: "We just knew how to take care of each other onstage (trên sân khấu) in a way that I didn't think I would see again…" But he is seeing it again. "It's totally different, but I'm having it. And the reason I know is — I am gay as a three-dollar bill, but I am hot for Sutton Foster, and I am really hot for Sara Bareilles."

"Not a Chinaman's chance" nghĩa là gì?

Sự kỳ thị, phân biệt chủng tộc chưa bao giờ biến mất. Photo by Megan Markham from Pexels

"Not a Chinaman's chance" = không có cơ hội cho người Trung Quốc -> viễn cảnh vô vọng, hoàn toàn không có cơ hội. Cụm từ phân biệt chủng tộc này có từ những năm 1800, khi người Trung Quốc nhập cư sang làm việc với mức lương cực thấp, thuế cao, bị cấm làm chứng trước tòa, vấp phải sự phân biệt đối xử...

Ví dụ
"If we were driving to the store and it was 10 minutes to closing time, but we were 20 minutes away from the store, he’d just look at me and say, ‘Oh, Eric, we have a Chinaman’s chance of getting there on time,’” said Liu.

In 2018, he used the phrase “Chinaman’s chance” to describe a piece of legislation’s (pháp luật) possibility of survival (khả năng sống sót). He’s also compared himself favorably to Kunta Kinte, an African slave (nô lệ) in the 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

Justice (công lý) released a statement the day after the incident (vụ việc) saying he did not use the word as a racial epithet (tên gọi phân biệt chủng tộc), and I believe him. Justice is given to folksy (bình dân) and occasionally culturally outdated language (ngôn ngữ lỗi thời). For example, two years ago he said there wasn’t a “Chinaman’s chance” he would support raising natural gas severance taxes (thuế khai mỏ) to fund teacher pay raises.

"Beat the living daylights out of him" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Andrew Le on Unsplash

"Beat the living daylights out of someone" = đánh bật ánh sáng ra khỏi ai -> nghĩa là đánh ai đó rất mạnh tay/tàn bạo.

Ví dụ
But when the British style icon was punched in the face he fought back. "I never flip unless someone physically hurts me," he says evenly. "When he hit me, I beat the living daylights out of him and his friends." The Miyake dress, he notes with the satisfaction (thỏa mãn) of a true fashionista (tín đồ thời trang), acted as a kind of armour: protecting him from all but the most severe (gay gắt) blows.

This man's eight-month pregnant wife used his AR-15 to save his life when two armed home invaders (xâm nhập) beat the living daylights out of him and threatened (đe dọa) their 11-year-old daughter.

The problem isn’t even with the way Smith-Schuster then stood over the concussed (hăm dọa) linebacker like the kid in school who got pushed just a little too far and snapped on the older, much larger bully, and beat the living daylights out of him.

"Rather you than me" nghĩa là gì?

"Giờ mày làm hay tao làm?" Photo by Ashkan Forouzani on Unsplash

"Rather someone than me" = có lẽ bạn (làm) tốt hơn tôi (làm) -> biểu hiện mừng vì tôi không phải làm điều đó như bạn đã làm.

Ví dụ
It is all surprisingly tender (dịu dàng) and quite compelling (hấp dẫn). Rather her than me, though, for the sanctions (lệnh trừng phạt) remain: no more than three men are permitted (được phép) to congregate (tụ tập) on my premises (cơ ngơi) at any one time.

His wife Trudie Styler pointed out the land lies close to Stonehenge and said: ‘The archaeologists (nhà khảo cổ) told us the woman was about 18 years old, and the fact she was facing north, and face down, was an indication (biểu thị) that she died in disgrace (tủi nhục).’ Rather you than me, Sting. And if you find a body, dial 999…

Micha (Albrecht Schuch), who usually works with troubled (gặp khó khăn) teenagers and whose job it is to escort (hộ tống) her to school each day, offers her three weeks of one-on-one caregiving (chăm sóc 1-1) in a remote cabin in the Lüneberg Heath. His colleagues (đồng nghiệp) flash a rather-you-than-me look. Waving them off, someone says to Benni: “Don’t kill him, OK?”

"Rank higher than" nghĩa là gì?

Người số 1 sẽ là ai đây? Photo by Joshua Golde on Unsplash

"Rank higher than (one) " = đạt thứ hạng cao hơn -> cấp bậc, vị trí cao hơn trong doanh nghiệp, chính phủ hoặc quân đội.

Ví dụ
I had Hogberg ranked higher than most, due to his ceiling as a defenseman (phòng thủ) playing in the SHL, which is regarded as one of the best leagues (giải đấu) in the world (as mentioned by Brad). He’s still only 21 years old and has been able to hold his own against profesional players (cầu thủ chuyên nghiệp) in the SHL.

These percentile-ranked (thứ hạng phần trăm) scores using both fundamental (cơ bản) and technical analysis (phân tích) give investors (nhà đầu tư) an easy way to view the attractiveness (sự hấp dẫn) of specific stocks. The scores range from 0 to 100, meaning a score of 50 represents that stock ranking higher than 50 percent of all stocks.

There are thousands of options and it can be confusing (nhầm lẫn) on what actually constitutes (tạo nên) a "great" value. Investors Observer allows you to choose from eight unique metrics (tiêu chuẩn đánh giá) to view the top industries and the best performing stocks (cổ phiếu) in that industry. A stock with a score of 71 would rank higher than 71 percent of all stocks.

"Prevention is better than cure" nghĩa là gì?

Quyết tâm chiến thắng đại dịch! Photo by Min An from Pexels

"Prevention is better than cure" = phòng bệnh hơn chữa bệnh.

Ví dụ
It was a short work trip to Kyrgyzstan. I went there for a music video. The whole world is having trouble (gặp rắc rối) with the corona virus and one should take proper precautions (biện pháp phòng ngừa đúng đắn) to avoid any issue. Prevention is better than cure.

While speaking with us, Kiran said, "I believe, prevention is better than cure. In a crisis situation (tình hình khủng hoảng) like this, it is important for everyone to follow the basic precautionary measures (biện pháp phòng ngừa cơ bản) to be safe from Coronavirus. It all starts with an individual to take a personal interest (lợi ích cá nhân) and create public awareness (nhận thức cộng động)."

But our Islam (đạo Hồi) has also preached (thuyết giáo) “Prevention is better than Cure”. If you are suffering from a disease (mắc bệnh) and not taking medicines or going to hospital for cure this is insane (điên rồ), Islam does not preach this. Islam teaches us to both put our trust in Allah and utilize (tận dụng) all the possible means (phương tiện có thể) to protect ourselves and our bodies.

"Female of the species is more deadly than the male" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng dại, chị em chúng tôi không ngán một ai. Photo by Luis Fernandes from Pexels

"Female of the species is more deadly than the male" = giống cái (của muôn loài) nguy hiểm hơn giống đực -> ở nhiều loài động vật, giống cái có độc còn giống đực thì không, tương tự, phụ nữ nguy hiểm hơn đàn ông.

Ví dụ
The female of the species is more deadly than the male, the famed author (tác giả nổi tiếng) Rudyard Kipling wrote, and that’s certainly true for the mosquito Aedes aegypti (muỗi vằn), also known as the yellow fever mosquito. Only females feast (hứng thú) on human blood, transmitting (truyền) not only yellow fever but also dengue (sốt xuất huyết) and several other diseases.

The female of the species is more deadly than the male goes the saying but too often it is women who are the victims (nạn nhân) in our world. Oppressed (bị áp bức) and treated (đối xử) as second class citizens since the dawn of time (rất lâu về trước), things are at last changing for women in the western world but elsewhere they continue to have fewer rights (quyền) and less say then men.

The female of the species is more deadly than the male. It’s a great line, familiar (quen thuộc) as a pop song in the 90s but actually nicked (đặt biệt danh) from a poem by Rudyard Kipling. Anyone who’s watched a David Attenborough documentary (phim tài liệu) will appreciate its truth when we see killer females who make their male animal or insect partners appear like big wusses (nhát cáy).

"Get into bad company" nghĩa là gì?

“Get into bad company” = Kết bạn/giao du với những người xấu.

Ví dụ
“A positive and encouraging circle of friends will ensure that a child stays positive and does not get into bad company,” said Mr. Srivastava.

A parent Nayan Naik said that in ninth many weak students fail. “If the government is really interested in the students not dropping out from school (bỏ học), then, it should adopt pass policy till tenth so that they get government jobs,” he said. He claimed that after dropping out from schools, many students get into bad company, drugs and anti-social activities (ma túy và các tệ nạn xã hội).

Let us now have a look at astrological (thuộc chiêm tinh) pointers to your child’s habit tendencies. The fiery Sun is ill-disposed off to another fiery planet Mars, makes her impulsive (bốc đồng, hấp tấp), aggressive (hung hãn), and argumentative (thích tranh cãi, hay cãi lẽ). Moon opposite Uranus makes her unconventional (trái với thông lệ), careless, unstable, having a mercurial temperament (tính khí không kiên định). Mars placed adverse to mischievous Neptune makes her self-deluding and addictive. Also, it makes her vulnerable to develop inferiority (vị trí thấp hơn, kém hơn) complex. Venus opposite Mars, and also placed adverse to Neptune makes her vulnerable to get into bad company. She may unmindfully misdirect her energies towards unproductive ends. Afflicted Neptune in the 2nd accounts for her indiscrete (không rời rạc, gắn chặt thành một khối) statements that may offend others. All the more, because she is undiplomatic (không khéo léo, không tế nhị, không có tính chất ngoại giao) and tactless (không khéo xử, không lịch thiệp) as her lagna sign Sagittarius implies.

"Get into an argument about" nghĩa là gì?

Bắt đầu hót líu lo. Photo by Wynand van Poortvliet

“Get into an argument about (someone or something)” = Bắt đầu cãi nhau với ai

Ví dụ
As The Daily Mail previously reported in August 2018, Alley previously appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. During one episode, she and another houseguest started to get into an argument about politics. However, just before things started to get rancorous (hay hiềm thù, đầy ác ý), Alley left the room.

Jamie is then dispatched (được sai phái, giết đi) by Prince Charles to enlist more men and support for the cause, including Lord Lovat, who is his and Jenny's grandfather. As a result of this, Jenny and Jamie get into an argument about him going to beg him for help. However, Jamie makes it up to his sister when he decides to watch over her newborn while she and Ian get some rest.

Meanwhile back in Roswell, we see Maria and Michael at the Wild Pony that Maria bartends. She spots Michael with another woman and getting into an altercation (cuộc đấu khẩu, cãi lộn) with another man, and then leads the couple outside. Michael and Maria then get into an argument about how Michael is hurting her by showing off with another woman in front of her and using the excuse that he’s not relationship material. This causes Maria to take his keys and tell him he can pick them up the next day and walk home.

"Nutty as a fruitcake" nghĩa là gì?

"Nutty as a fruitcake" hoặc "nuttier than a fruitcake" = nhiều hạt/quả như bánh trái cây -> (tính tình một người) quái gở, ngang bướng, điên khùng.

Ví dụ
It was so clear to me that Leslie was as nutty as a fruitcake. I would have been in grave neglect of my duty (sao lãng bổn phận nghiêm trọng) if I didn’t give the judge (thẩm phán) my opinion.

Jayalalithaa once cut a birthday cake shaped like Parliament (Quốc hội) revealing (tiết lộ) that anyone who didn’t take her seriously on national politics (chính trị quốc gia) was as nutty as a fruitcake.

If you thought that this season is going to be comprised (chứa đựng) of packed storylines, you’re in for a real roller coaster ride (chuyến tàu lượn siêu tốc). It is going to be nutty as a fruitcake, which will make your mind go bats in the belfry (dở hơi).

When he was virtually unopposed (gần như không phản đối) that might have seemed adventuresome (thích mạo hiểm), but now, with voters looking on, he may have to come up with a salient defense (biện pháp bảo vệ) for a flight of fancy that’s nutty as a fruitcake.

"Get into a fight" nghĩa là gì?

“Get into a fight” = Cãi nhau/đấu khẩu và đánh nhau với ai.

Ví dụ
On Dec. 7, Wagar was on the Banff Trail CTrain station platform when he got into a fight with an unknown male and pulled a knife, Drew said.

“In fact, he decided to get into a fight with Andrew Cuomo, about whether he could have ordered the ventilators (máy thông gió) on his own years ago or not,” said CNN political correspondent Gloria Borger. “Look, this is a president who is clearly worried about the economy, as everybody else is, and seems to be driven by his own instinct, as we all know, because he’s told us, more than the science.”

Recently, JBL took to Twitter and shared an interesting story from his stint (phận sự, công việc) in WWE years ago. The story featured a backstage fight between Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. Former WWE Superstar explained that both Superstars returned backstage one night, after a match, and were visibly heated. He also said that he could hear the fight, and was the only person in the locker room at the time. After John Lairinaitis separated the two, Eddie sat with JBL and admitted that it’s stupid of him to get into a fight with Angle.
