"Not take all day" nghĩa là gì?

All for one and one for all. Photo by Margarida CSilva

"Not take all day" = Không mất cả ngày đâu -> Chỉ việc không mất quá nhiều thời gian để làm, thường là thể hiện thái độ tức giận với ai đó khi nhờ họ làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
“It's something we can do as a team and enjoy each other's company and not take all day,” he said.

Races are not good enough to get the people to stay tuned for all afternoon. A race should not take all day to run.

It will likely not take all day to choose them, Ferguson said, so the rest of the day will likely be used to begin presenting evidence.

"Twist the lion's tail" nghĩa là gì?

Trông ta dễ dãi lắm à? Photo by Tina Nord from Pexels

"Twist the lion's tail" = quấn đuôi sư tử -> khiêu khích, khích bác đối thủ. Ban đầu sử dụng để khiêu khích Anh Quốc (quốc huy nước này có hình con sư tử).

Ví dụ
At my big meetings I nearly always got in something about England, and I thought it very significant that my protests against twisting the lion’s tail were invariably (luôn luôn) greeted with a storm of applause (tràng vỗ tay).

Last July, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani threatened that if Trump expanded sanctions (lệnh trừng phạt) on Iranian oil he would retaliate (trả đũa) by closing the Strait of Hormuz to foreign ships. He told a group of ambassadors (đại sứ), “Mr. Trump! Do not twist the lion’s tail because you will regret.”

Given Great Britain’s tacit support (ngầm ủng hộ) for the Confederacy (Liên minh) and American hopes that Canada would become the next territory (lãnh thổ) to be absorbed as the country continued to fulfill its Manifest Destiny, President Andrew Johnson was more than willing to let the Irish Republican Army twist the tail of the British lion.

"Twist the knife" nghĩa là gì?

Tình nguyện bị đâm. Photo by Bia Sousa from Pexels

"Twist the knife (in the wound) = xoáy dao vào vết thương-> làm trầm trọng thêm vấn đề, đổ thêm dầu vào lửa, khiến người "bị đâm" đã đau càng đau thêm.

Ví dụ
If there was one player Hearts did not want to twist the knife in these desperate (tuyệt vọng) times, it was Marvin Bartley.

Officially retired (nghỉ hưu) and living off the grid (không thuộc sự giám sát) when we re-join him in Jamaica, not only has Bond seemingly been betrayed (phản bội) by his former lover Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld is back to twist the knife.

The show seems to want to twist the knife in Trump’s wounded ego but it ends up bolstering (củng cổ) his anti-Nato stance (lập trường) by presenting its members as smarmy elitist punks (tần lớp du côn nịnh hót). It’s not the worst cold open of the season, but it may be the most misguided.'

"Lot of give-and-take" nghĩa là gì?

Khi các cô các thím tám chuyện. Photo by Gradikaa Aggi

"Lot of give-and-take" = Nhiều sự cho và nhận -> Chỉ sự tương tác giữa hai bên, sự bàn bạc và thỏa thuận của hai bên; sự có qua có lại với nhau; nhiều sự đàm phán và thương lượng.

Ví dụ
There's a lot of give-and-take on both sides, and that's the way you can kind of come to grips (nắm chặt) with the situation you're in and move forward.”.

It's a lot of give and take, a lot of give and take, and I'm very patient with it.” Joseph's thinking: The home-design plans eventually will get there.

While codeshare (chuyến bay liên danh) leads to ease of travel for consumers. There is a lot of give and take for airlines during the negotiations stage which deals with commercials (thương mại), how the revenue is divided amongst the two carriers – the one booking the ticket and one operating it. A lot of effort goes into handling nitty-gritties (thực chất của vấn đề) like how many seats can be sold across classes by whom and so on. With Vistara – relative a newer airline looking to build its base, it typically would have been easier to tie up with Vistara over Air India.

"It would take an act of Congress to" nghĩa là gì?

Cường quốc số 1 thế giới. Photo by  Joshua Sukoff

"It would take an act of Congress to (do something)" = Có Quốc hội bắt tay hành động mới làm được -> Một việc vô cùng khó khăn đạt được và phải yêu cầu sự nổ lực và kiên nhẫn rất nhiều; chỉ điều có khả năng không thể làm được.

Ví dụ
The survivors want to take insurance companies to court in the U.S. to recover the money, but it would take an act of Congress to allow it.

It would take an act of Congress to require the CMS to recognize genetic counselors as healthcare providers (việc hỗ trợ chăm sóc sức khỏe). And the issue is gaining traction (sự kéo).

Khawam told him it would take an act of Congress to change the rule -- so they went to work, setting up meetings with members of Congress to try to get one of them to introduce legislation (hiến pháp) to challenge Feres.

"It takes two to make a quarrel" nghĩa là gì?

Nhường nhịn nhau mà sống cho khỏe. Photo by Thomas Kinto

"It takes two to make a quarrel" = Phải do lỗi hai người mới có vụ cãi nhau chứ -> Một cuộc cãi lộn không thể chỉ do lỗi một người, nếu người kia không có lỗi sao lại phải cãi nhau.

Ví dụ
It takes two to make a quarrel. “Saudia Arabia hasn't taken one refugee (người tị nạn) from Syria explaining “there could be a terrorist (kẻ khủng bố) among them”.

Radhakrishnan’s biographer (người viết tiểu sử) and son, Gopal, tells us that when Stalin did meet Nehru’s ambassador (đại sứ), he found his slim, tall visitor advising him to explore the possibility of détente (tình trạng bớt căng thẳng). On Stalin’s saying he could not do that by himself, the ambassador said it takes two to make a quarrel but one can stop it.

Written by Radain Shah and directed by Aabis Raza, Bewafa seems to tread (bước đi, giẫm lên) on a dicey subject (thứ nguy hiểm). It shows that it takes two to make a quarrel. It questions our definitions of loyalty and cheating, and how men always look outside their homes for solace (lời an ủi), rather than working on relationships at home. We were disappointed to see yet another middle class girl shown as a cunning and a heartless social climber, but let’s hope that the story unfolds (bộc lộ, bày tỏ) better than our expectations.

"It takes getting used to" nghĩa là gì?

Cô ấy đã quá quen với lối sống sang chảnh. Photo by Artsy Vibes

"It takes getting used to" = Cần thời gian để quen với/thích nghi với ai/điều gì; ban đầu thì không thích thú lắm nhưng sau một khoảng thời gian thì cũng không còn nhàm chán nữa.

Ví dụ
"These guys, it takes getting used to, it's a rhythm thing. "Early on it's going to be challenging and then once you get used to it it becomes OK.

While it takes getting used to, it comes with the role. “You need to watch the players in case anyone has a delayed injury or a concussion (sự chấn động).

“The field is wider, longer, the downs are different and there's more players on the field. It's a different game up here and it takes getting used to.

But I don't think it would be any more difficult to any other language. It takes getting used to and dedication (sự cống hiến). And practice, practice, practice!

"It takes a thief to catch a thief" nghĩa là gì?

Hacker bí ẩn. Photo by  W A T A R I

"It takes a thief to catch a thief" = Dùng trộm bắt trộm -> Người mà hay phạm pháp hoặc rất giỏi trong việc gây chuyện thì rất giỏi phát hiện hoặc bắt người có kỹ năng/làm điều tương tự như mình.

Ví dụ
“It takes a thief to catch a thief.” Despite being hundreds of years old, this idiom holds perfectly true for that most modern of thieves, the cybercriminal (tội phạm công nghệ cao). With adversaries (đối thủ, kẻ địch) consistently evolving their tools and techniques to overcome defensive solutions, foiling (ngăn cản) their attacks requires ethical hackers who are able to think in the same way and spot the same potential attack pathways.

Hiring ethical hackers to be part of a company's security staff is an approach several tech giants (gã khổng lồ công nghệ) -- including Apple, Google and Microsoft -- have adopted to help them build robust (cường tráng) protections against other, unfriendly hackers. The idea is that it takes a thief to catch a thief. This new approach provides a way for the hospital to use internal employees to identify issues with the network and other areas of the IT systems and fix them before they result in a breach (sự vi phạm).

That’s a perception abetted (xúi làm bậy) by the regulation military fatigues (sự mệt nhọc) worn by Asan, one of a mini-army of game rangers employed by a local conservancy (sự bảo vệ) — and a former poacher himself, qualified for the position by the old “it takes a thief to catch a thief” rationale. He’s also the cousin of “X,” who runs a small-time poaching racket without getting any blood on his own hands, instead delegating the actual hunting to his assistant Lukas. “I don’t like killing,” says “X,” a point he repeats as a kind of moral alibi (chứng cứ ngoại phạm).

"Take a shufti" nghĩa là gì?

Cảm giác bị ai đó theo dõi. Photo by  Allef Vinicius

"Take a shufti (someone or something)" = Nhìn hoặc liếc vào ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Talking to the farm owner, I discovered they have a pretty steady stream of visitors asking for permission to hop over the gate and take a shufti.

When you first take a shufti at the P6, you'll find that the 3.5mm socket (lỗ, ổ cắm điện) is filled with a little tool to prise (cậy lên) open the SIM and Mcro SD ports.

Despite your initial assumptions, it's actually capable of displaying both time and date, and there's even a built-in alarm with a "light-up animation." Fancy! It's available in black with blue, green or red LEDs, and if you order soon, you'll be able to snag one for $129 / £79 / €89; procrastinators (người trì hoãn, chần chừ) will face a sticker of $149 / £91 / €103. Take a shufti in the gallery below.

"Twist your words" nghĩa là gì?

"Các vị hãy nghe kỹ và đừng xuyên tạc lời tôi nói nhé!" Photo by mentatdgt from Pexels

"Twist one's words (around)" có nghĩa là xoay chuyển (nói lại) lời nói của ai một cách sai lệch, tam sao thất bản.

Ví dụ
Clearly she's still getting dragged for her hair choice since she's sent out yet another video going off about the ordeal (thử thách) and how people are twisting her words.

In one instance, he denies a couple of print journalists a post-match (sau trận đấu) interview. The camera is a fly-on-the-wall as he bluntly (thẳng thừng) tells them that they will twist his words.

“You got some nerve! You would come in here and rob the one rich black house in Nottingham?” Milligan’s character says. “No no no, that is not what is happening here. You’re twisting my words. I give to the poor! It is a good thing that I am doing!” Tarver as Robin Hood argues.

"Twist with pain" nghĩa là gì?

"Twist with pain" có nghĩa là quằn quại đau đớn.

Ví dụ
Darcy looked uncomfortable, but her face didn't twist with pain.

He looked up to meet Denny's enraged (giận dữ) eyes and I watched Kellan's face twist with pain.

Her face twisted with pain as another violent contraction (co thắt dữ dội) shuddered (run lên) through her.

He felt his heart twist with pain, but what deepened the pain, intensified it, were the tears he could see shimmering (thấp thoáng, lung linh) in her eyes, tears he knew were going to fall at any moment.

"Twist in the wind" nghĩa là gì?

Những người trẻ sinh ra thời bình, nhưng có chắc là hòa bình? Photo by shukatron

"Twist (slowly) in the wind" = vặn mình trong gió -> bị bỏ rơi, cô lập trong những lúc gặp khó khăn, vấn đề rắc rối nào đó hoặc cảm thấy bất lực, đau đớn vì không thể giải quyết tình hình (như người bị treo cổ). "Leave (one) to twist (in the wind)" là đẩy ai vào tình thế như trên.

Ví dụ
But other players, especially young ones working their way up through the ranks, may be stifled (cản trở) by the example of Kaepernick left to twist in the wind of no-change.

Retailers (nhà bán lẻ) have few ways to insulate (cách ly) themselves against IMO 2020, experts say. Verleger sees a scenario (kịch bản) in which “retailers could twist slowly, slowly in the wind” if a significant piece of the gasoline and diesel barrel (xăng và dầu) cut is diverted to process low-sulfur (hàm lượng lưu huỳnh thấp) fuel.

Chinese students twist in the wind. They are the big losers in this theater of the absurd (phi lý)— along with democracy (dân chủ).Its enemies must be snickering (cười thầm) while they watch our ability to do what is right become ensnared (mắt kẹt) in a trap of territorial (lãnh thổ) in-fighting and political one-upsmanship (giành lợi thế chính trị).

"Heavy date" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Wiktor Karkocha on Unsplash

"Heavy date" = cuộc hẹn nặng nề -> nghĩa là cuộc hẹn quan trọng.

Ví dụ
This week, Jacqueline and Liam discuss who the eliminated girls were probably warning Colton about, Colton's overly hot and heavy date with Hannah G. and Sydney's very mature and impressive breakup with Colton.

Kaia Gerber caught kissing Pete Davidson during hot and heavy date night at music concert in NYC. She is his pride (niềm tự hào) and joy (niềm vui).

Scorpios, on the other hand, are known to drive their partners wild on an exciting and exhilarating expedition (cuộc hành trình vui vẻ). They prefer hot and heavy date nights, as opposed to Taurueans, who love to take their time and savor everything.

"Round the twist" nghĩa là gì?

Ngoài những lúc bất thường ra thì anh ấy cũng khá là bình thường. Photo by ibadatcreates from Pexels

"Round the twist" = quay quanh vòng xoáy ->(hành vi hoặc ý nghĩ) điên, dở hơi. "Go round the twist" là trở nên điên điên, khùng khùng (vì quá buồn chán).

Ví dụ
Have you ever, ever felt like this, how strange things happen are you going round the twist?

The person receiving an email very late at night or at dawn doesn’t think you are working hard. They think you may be round the twist.

Want to go Round the Twist? Clifftop property right next to the show's iconic lighthouse (ngọn hải đăng mang tính biểu tượng) is up for sale for the first time in a century.

But being a volunteer (tình nguyện) doesn’t just lift Mary Jane’s spirits (tinh thần); it also gives her much-needed purpose. “It really does help me get out the door and be involved with people … If I were stuck at home and not engaged (tham gia) with anything, I would go round the twist,” she laughs.

"Twist into" nghĩa là gì?

Bộ điều chỉnh không thể thiếu trong phòng thu. Photo by David Bartus from Pexels

"Twist (something) into something" = xoắn lại, cuộn lại, làm thay đổi, biến dạng từ A thành B.

Ví dụ
And indeed, is there any president whose activities a clever lawyer/politician (luật sư/chính trị gia) couldn’t twist into such grounds? And, if the first round didn’t work, they’d find others.

Abbey Road Saturator can add subtle harmonic enhancement (tăng cường độ hài hòa), to powerful distortion effects (hiệu ứng biến đổi) that twist the original instrument (âm thanh gốc) into an entirely new effect.

These knobs (nút bấm) help you set up the right sound for the band. It also has a blend knob, that is suitable to add that extra notch (nấc) or twist into the sound. You have the choice of going all out or just use it to boost (tăng cường) the sound.

The M340i isn't just a numbers car, though. On the street, the adaptive dampers (giảm chấn) provide a smooth ride over the open road yet can firm up nicely when the pavement (mặt đường lát) begins to twist into the shape of a rattlesnake (rắn chuông).

"Twist up" nghĩa là gì?

Cuộn lên ăn mới đúng kiểu nha. Photo by Lisa Fotios from Pexels

"Twist up" = xoắn trôn ốc, cuộn lên thành hình trôn ốc (khói); cuộn (mảnh giấy) thành hình trôn ốc.

Ví dụ
In all but the lightest winds, the vang (dây thừng căng 2 bên) usually is set so the boom (sào căng buồm) is parallel (song song) to the deck with 5–10° of twist up the leech (cạnh buồm, mép buồm).

However, if I close my eyes and try to repeatedly twist up and to the right top quadrant (góc 1/4), followed by twisting down and to the left bottom quadrant – now that gets difficult and can quickly lead to a fall.

Twist up the flavor of these meatballs by changing just a few ingredients (thành phần): To give them an italian flair (tinh tế), add some chopped fresh basil (húng quế) and freshly grated parmesan cheese (loại phô mai sợi).

Hardware developers take great pains to see how players hold and use the controller (bộ điều khiển). This is the reason it never made any sense to me that a developer would create a control scheme that forced players to twist up their hands like pretzels (bánh quy xoắn).

"Do a takeoff on" nghĩa là gì?

Chẳng phải là Xuân Diệu anh cũng biết làm thơ. Photo by  Brad Neathery

"Do a takeoff on (someone or something)" = Nhái lại, bắt chước lại ai/cái gì một cách hài hước hoặc châm biếm.

Ví dụ
“I was raised in the ’40s and early ’50s going to movies with my grandmother. It was a given when we got the show I would want to do a takeoff on Double Indemnity, or The Postman Always Rings Twice.”

Yeah. We always talked about a musical episode. My pitch was always that we would do a takeoff on THE PRODUCERS, and Penguin and Nygma would put on a Broadway show in Gotham City, but that was [for] Season 6.

Somewhat recently, then, there was the famous incident (đoạn, tình tiết) of a pirate broadcaster (một buổi phát thanh không được phép chính thức) breaking into the Channel 11 and WGN airwaves, with a guy in a Max Headroom mask. I proposed that we do a takeoff on that: that I was a former disgruntled (bực tức, bất bình) employee (ahem) who breaks into the airwaves every week and shows a movie.

A spokesman confirmed that he has been in talks to join the Catholic Diocese of Clifton, although he is unlikely to take Holy Orders.

Cohen spent the following two years giving concerts to pay off his creditors, being forbidden (bị ngăn cấm) to take Holy Orders until this was achieved.

Many families like Hopakuli’s saw sending their sons to the monastery (tu viện) as a continuation of the tradition of sending the youngest son to take holy orders. “One of the characters in my film told me that the quality of life was so much better at the monastery as opposed to his home,” Kang noted. “This is a very common situation.”

"Bring up-to-date" nghĩa là gì?

"Bring something/someone up-to-date" -> nghĩa là cập nhật, hiện đại hóa.

It is this diagonal that the brand Copa and ASM have decided to bring up to date, re-issuing a collector’s vintage jersey (áo len jersey) with this effigy (hình nổi), with the famous initials (tên viết tắt) of RMC in black in the center.

The family-run firm (công ty) has gone from strength to strength and the store continues to bring up-to-date quality designer jewellery to suit all tastes.

The five-bedroom house at 15 Towers Street, Ascot, was transformed over the course of 14 months by the talented team at Zephyr Industries so that it now boasts (khoe) an array (một dàn) of exclusive features - from a giant wine cellar for 2,000 bottles to a glass elevator and rooftop entertaining zone. While previously the home was a 'beautiful old Queenslander property', Zephyr Industries Director Brayden Larkin said it needed some work to bring it up to date.

"Able to take a joke" nghĩa là gì?

Hài kinh. Photo by  Katrina Berban

"Able to take a joke" = Có thể làm trò cười -> Có thể giữ bình tĩnh và vui vẻ phản ứng lại việc mình bị làm trò hề; sẵn sàng chấp nhận việc bị làm trò cười.

Ví dụ
Scousers are known for their sense of humour (khiếu hài hước) - and we'd like to think we can take a joke better than most people.

“I don't hit women, but if I did I'd hit you.” When McCammond said that was offensive, Barkley accused her of not being able to take a joke.

Players in the women’s World Cup have demanded equal pay to their male counterparts, so it follows that they should be equally able to take a joke, even a bad one.

Indeed, his appearance was almost entirely without controversy (gây tranh cãi) as he waxed poetic on his philosophies (triết lý sống) on failure and how important it is to be able to take a joke.
