"Right off the bat" nghĩa là gì?

'Right off the bat' nghĩa là ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ
I was surprised by that because I don't think we went out everybody charging at Giordano right off the bat.

On that instance, we knew we had a driver that was possibly impaired just by the officer's observations of this individual right off the bat.

Right off the bat, Sacred Heart’s defense turned into quick offense as Nate Tabor led all scores at the half with 12, and Connor Tierney recorded six blocks.

WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle recently did a Q&A on Facebook and commented on a number of interesting topics. Right off the bat, one fan asked him about comparing Daniel Bryan vs. Mustafa Ali on SmackDown to his match against John Cena on the night that he made his main roster debut on SmackDown in 2002. “I believe it had the same feel. The champ (Bryan) gave the new kid (or younger kid) a chance and the new kid stuck with him the entire match. Nothing more exciting than to see a heel champ lose (or almost lose) to the young buck. Great story telling. Both matches had that.”

"Bat an eye" nghĩa là gì?

great-horned owlet: he was awake, but would doze off from time to time, not at all threatened by me. i was amazed that he let me slip closer and closer to him without batting an eye. Photo courtesy devra.

'Bat an eye' có từ bat là nháy mắt, chớp mắt -> cụm từ này thường được dùng ở thể phủ định để nói là 'không chớp mắt', không nháy mắt, = không thể hiện cảm xúc (sự kinh ngạc, sửng sốt, khiếp đảm; tức giận, buồn bã...); 'không ghê tay'...

Ví dụ
Most of the time businesses don't bat an eye, but on that day, Read got into a heated argument with Tim Hortons' employees over Joey.

When asked about that future – and a potential world title in Japan in March – the two didn’t bat an eye. “It’s too expensive not to go for gold,” Donohue offered, followed by Hubbell: “We were silver last year so why wouldn’t we reach a little higher and go for gold?”

So our hypothetical (có tính cách giả thuyết) utopian (người đề ra/ủng hộ chính sách thiếu thực tế; không tưởng) folks wouldn’t bat an eye at two men sharing a kiss, but would likely get pretty pissed if someone came around advocating the use of tear gas against people in need, or death for sick people who don’t have the money to pay for treatment, or killing machines for everybody—all of which are mainstream (dòng chính, chủ lưu) conservative (bảo thủ) points of view (quan điểm, lập trường).

It was flamboyant (hoa mỹ, khoa trương, cường điệu) and deliciously gaudy (lòe loẹt, hoa hòe hoa sói; cầu kỳ, hoa mỹ), with Bollywood glitterati arriving decked in bejeweled saris; at one event, the famously fashionable groom sported a sparkling cat on one shoulder of his kurta, or long tunic (áo dài thắt ngang lưng). The western media barely bat an eye. Two Bollywood stars getting married, after all, wasn’t a big deal, no matter the fact that they had the pocketbooks and loyalty of about a billion people.

"Take a telling-off" nghĩa là gì?

Neverland reprimand. Photo courtesy greyloch.

'Take a telling-off' nghĩa là bị rầy la, mắng nhiếc vì làm gì sai.

Ví dụ
The CV also boasts that the youngster’s other qualities include being able to ‘handle defeat’ and take a telling-off from a teacher without sulking (hờn dỗi, sưng sỉa).

He’d huff and puff but when he knew he was in the wrong he’d take a telling off well. He was noted as unadoptable but he was turning into a wonderful young man.

Football is getting soft and a lot of players can’t take a telling-off because they’re on fortunes. There are true pros who are a credit to the game but a lot aren’t.

In the real world, though, even serial cereal lovers will surely gag at the concept of drinkable Weetabix, a concept that ranks somewhere between fizzy Marmite and corned beef slurry on the scale of liquefied desirability. Frankly, we’d rather take a telling-off from our boss.

"Screw your courage to the sticking place" nghĩa là gì?

hết sức can đảm đi giày cao gót dự hội sách... Photo courtesy ActuaLitté.

'Screw your courage to the sticking place' nghĩa là quyết tâm, cương quyết, kiên quyết; kiên định, vững vàng, không chùn bước; đây là một câu trong Macbeth của Shakespeare, năm 1605.

Ví dụ
With some 62 book-related events loaded into a single 10-hour day, Portland Book Festival is an unparalleled opportunity, even for those of us who don’t like to leave our couches, teapots and teetering stacks of books. So gird your loins and screw your courage to the sticking place, my friends—you still have a few days to prepare. And prepare you must!

After Lady Macbeth advised her husband to “screw your courage to the sticking-place” in Act I, the guilt of murdering King Duncan in Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play” drives her to pace the halls of her castle in her sleep, uttering her most famous soliloquy. “Wash your hands. Put on your nightgown. Look not so pale. — I tell you yet again, Banquo’s buried; he cannot come out on ’s grave.”

Just as you were minding your own business, your phone pings automatically with a notification that you've been added to some random group. You're now part of neighbourhood watch, a high school group and disturbingly (in my case) a "Chinese Friends" group. It makes for the stuff of eye-rolls and deep sighs. And just like in real life some characters make you grateful for mute buttons and others ultimately push you to screw your courage to the sticking-place, and be that person who "has left the group".

"Hammer and tongs" nghĩa là gì?

Two monks working in the blacksmith shop at Mission Santa Barbara, ca.1900. Photo courtesy Ashley Van Haeften.

'Hammer and tongs' nghĩa là tràn đầy năng lượng, hết sức nhiệt tình; dốc hết sức lực, với tất cả sức mạnh; dữ dội.

Ví dụ
Hashing power is a hammer and tongs approach, whereas a smart combination of AI and blockchain would see far more efficient code-breaking.

WE KNOW SOME PEOPLE REALLY LIKE FORTNITE, but going hammer and tongs over a sexed-up takes on Epic Games' cartoonish characters is arguably pretty niche.

The Congress had gone hammer and tongs after the BJP holding the party and its government led by Vasundhara Raje responsible for the alleged suicides of more than 250 farmers in the state.

Football is often described as being a cruel game and so it proved when we were robbed of at least a point by two glaring errors from Basque referee Gorostegui Fernandez. His first howler came on seven minutes with both teams going at it hammer and tongs. Good work down the right by Fran Gamez saw Raillo head in a beauty, which was chalked off for alleged offside. There was absolutely no way offside (việt vị) came into the equation and the goal (bàn thắng) was totally legitimate (hoàn toàn chính đáng).

"Talk to the hand" nghĩa là gì?

Empty Headed Conversation, Havana, Cuba. Photo courtesy Gareth Williams.

'Talk to the hand' = nói chuyện với bàn tay -> là lời nói chen ngang, thô lỗ để ngắt lời và gạt bỏ điều ai đang nói (đôi khi dài hơn là "talk to the hand, because the face isn't listening," hay tương tự; 'nói chuyện với bàn tay, vì cái mặt có nghe đâu); như 'nói chuyện với cái đầu gối/bịch bông'.

Ví dụ
Forget "talk to the hand;" in 2019, we're crawling away from unwanted conversations.

"Gossip Girl" star Michelle Trachtenberg and "90210" chick AnnaLynne McCord talked to the hand at the same event in Hollywood on Thursday.

She accessorised her swimwear with a playful straw floppy hat, that included the phrase 'talk to the hand' embroidered around the rim, and an over-sized pair of shades.

Vituperative backchat had probably been invented at cocktail parties by this point, but little of it had made its way into mass-market romantic song. If anyone talked to the hand, no one really mentioned it back then.

"Ride the pine" nghĩa là gì?

'Ride the pine' nghĩa là (nói về một cầu thủ, thường là bóng chày) ngồi trên ghế (dự bị) chứ không (được) tham gia (tích cực trong) trận đấu; 'mài đũng quần trên ghế dự bị'.

Ví dụ
Stephen Gionta has been incredibly ineffective since his arrival and he'll continue to ride the pine along with Luca Sbisa.

A chance to ride the pine on the Vancouver Canucks’ bench embarked Burnaby-trained goalie Matt Hewitt on a worldwide adventure to pursue his dream.

In central defense, with top center back Justen Glad continuing to ride the pine, Petke paired two players who had never played together before in the heart of defense.

James Reimer was already scheduled to start, but now we have to see if Michael Hutchinson will be called up to be the backup goalie, or if Luongo will be healthy enough to ride the pine in case of an emergency.

"Angry as a wasp" nghĩa là gì?

'Angry as a wasp' = giận giữ như ong vò vẽ -> nghĩa là cộc tính, nóng nảy; 'giãy lên như đỉa phải vôi', giãy lên như cá lóc bị đập đầu.

Ví dụ
Whether the Policy Makers like it or not, I'm back inside their hallowed portals as angry as a wasp - and just as nasty.

Her cellphone buzzed, angry as a wasp in her pocket. Sydney debated whether to answer it. She'd forgotten her headset and Route 1 was crwaling with cops. Still, what if it was something urgent?

You don’t know what it’s like to be alone until the day when your boyfriend, angry as a wasp, leaves you in the crowded plaza in the middle of Cuzco. You sit there, hugging your backpack and kicking your hiking boots against the dusty steps for a minute, and then an hour, and then two, until you’re wild with worry, strung out on fear. Because the sun is starting to set over the Spanish cathedral, and you’ve heard that you have to be careful, that gangs of feral (hoang dã; hung dữ, hung tợn, cục súc) boys will take everything but your underwear (quần lót). And people are watching you: the hunched (lưng còng) lady selling gourds (quả bầu) engraved with stories of saints and heartbreak; and the extroverted shoe-shine kids, who come so close you can see the reflection of the sky in their jet hair. Their eyes are hungry. You can’t stay much longer. But if you go, how will he ever find you again?

"Pull an all-nighter" nghĩa là gì?

đợi xem pháo hoa năm mới... Photo courtesy Matthias Ripp.

'Pull an all-nighter' nghĩa là thức (trắng) đêm, để học bài hoặc để làm trọn vẹn/hoàn thành việc gì.

Ví dụ
Montreal métro will pull an all-nighter for New Year's Eve.

I'm not quite sure I love it enough to, say, pull an all-nighter on Black Friday in the name of scoring some of the best deals.

It was a party we looked forward to all year — an excuse to pull an all-nighter outside when normally we’d be under curfew in the dorms, followed by the reward of towers of pancakes as night turned into morning.

Don’t actually pull an all-nighter: If you have to teach yourself six chapters of anatomy, it’s tempting to stay up all night in order to do so. But, according to this study from ScienceDaily, your brain actually loses efficiency with each hour of sleep deprivation (thiếu ngủ). The study recommends studying in small 20-30 minute increments multiple times per day a few days before your test.

"Leave a nasty taste in the mouth" nghĩa là gì?

dư vị ngọt ngào... Photo courtesy John Tornow.

'Leave a bad/nasty taste in the mouth' nghĩa là để lại dư vị cay đắng, để lại ấn tượng không mấy hay ho.

Ví dụ
It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth, and cries are already being voiced that Financial Fair Play rules need to be stricter.

Without a brave campaign by the former head of Conservative party communications Carrie Symonds, who waived her anonymity to reveal that she had been drugged by Worboys, this worrying case might never have achieved the political salience it did. What might have happened if his victims couldn’t bring such pressure to bear? But that’s not the only reason this case leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The first time you experience an upgrade, or step away from a hostel/cheap hotel, in favour of something more swanky (trưng diện, phô trương, sang, hợp thời trang, huênh hoang, khoe) and take in the difference in service levels it’s hard to walk away. And, as Lamer says, some LCC’s can be very disappointing in this area, leaving customers with a nasty taste in the mouth. Ultimately cash is king but if passengers don’t have to budget I’d suggest a traditional carrier every single time. No matter which rock stars you might get to spy.

"In the buff" nghĩa là gì?

'In the buff' có từ buff là da trâu, da bò, cụm từ này nghĩa là trần truồng, lõa lồ.

Ví dụ
A naked cleaning company is hiring people to work in the buff.

Bare All Cleaning, which sends women round to do chores in the buff, has hit back at claims of sexism by rolling out a gardening service performed by naked blokes.

Fully one-third of Americans opt for minimally invasive fat reduction or body sculpting treatments to look better in the buff, according to a new survey of 500 men and women from Cutera, Inc. And those who exercise regularly are most likely to have a body-sculpting treatment, with runners and yoga enthusiasts topping the list.

The raunchy (dâm dục, dâm ô) calendar features bare-breasted (ngực trần) babes (gái) leaning against farm machinery (máy móc nông nghiệp). While another shows some daring students doing the splits in the buff while hanging out on the uni's famous Mathematical Bridge. The pictures feature a variety of Cambridge University sports teams including men's' volleyball, skiing, women's football, men's lacrosse (môn thể thao dùng vợt để bắt và ném bóng) and fencing (thuật đánh kiếm).

"See a mote in another's eye" nghĩa là gì?

cười tươi trong ánh mắt em dịu dàng... Photo courtesy The Whisperer of the Shadow.

'To see a mote in another's eye' nghĩa là nhìn thấy khuyết điểm của người dù chỉ bằng hạt bụi (mà không nhìn thấy khuyết điểm của mình).

Ví dụ
People, let's not get off-topic here. This is about vile Christian terrorists who engaged in sick act towards their own son.
-> Now let's count how many Muslims kill their son because he is gay. See how that works? Sir, you have seen a mote in the eye of a Christian when there is a beam in the eye of Muslims.

We must not forget that the EP tries to intervene in the process of the Council as an actor with full competence. This clearly runs counter to the Council Legal Service’s opinion which states there is no role for the EP under TFEU in this phase of the Article 7 procedure. Is rule of law really important here? Or better: you can see a mote in another’s eye yet cannot see a beam in your own?

After the events of Aug. 11 and 12, the world, or rather, that part of the world that devotes itself to the moral instruction of others, has told us that we must face our racist past (quá khứ phân biệt chủng tộc), purge (thanh trừng, làm sạch, thanh lọc) ourselves of vestiges (dấu vết, di tích) of white supremacy (da trắng thượng đẳng) and otherwise cleanse our souls. I wish that the moralists (nhà luân lý học, nhà đạo đức học) would look to themselves and begin some of their hoped-for reform at home. As the rabbi says, “You see a mote in your neighbor’s eye but miss the log in your own.”

"Strip to the buff" nghĩa là gì?

'Strip to the buff' nghĩa là cởi hết quần áo, trần truồng.

Ví dụ
My skinny-dipping takes place either in very remote places, or after dark, which is my favourite thing in the whole world. (Although I confess that the news the Ukip bankroller Arron Banks also regards a moonlit beach as an opportunity to strip to the buff did take the edge off my pleasure for a week or two).

Fred Earl calls himself "a perennial gardener, someone who gardens for ever". Certainly, the Dunedin man and his wife, Gaynor seem to show no signs of slowing down, even at 87. One of their bravest exploits recently was to strip to the buff to be photographed for a fundraising calendar for the Dunedin Gardening Club (DGC), of which they are the longest-serving members, having joined in 1980.

The other outstanding act is David O'Mer, an aerialist (diễn viên đu dây, diễn viên nhào lộn trên không) who rises from his bath and twirls aloft clad only in wet jeans in cockily (vênh váo tự mãn) breathtaking and charmingly droll parody (trò chế nhạo, khôi hài, bắt chước hài hước để châm biếm) of those over-sexualised denim adverts. Yes, sex is strongly on the agenda in this show – but it's all good clean smut (lời nói tục tĩu, chuyện dâm ô), even Ursula Martinez's strip to the buff at each stage of which she makes a red handkerchief disappear and then re-materialise in less and less mentionable places.

"A mote in the eye" nghĩa là gì?

'A mote in someone's eye' có từ mote là bụi, hạt bụi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là lỗi nhỏ, hành động khinh suất/không suy nghĩ kỹ, thiếu thận trọng.

Ví dụ
He sees what he perceives to be a mote in the eye of the ordinary people while being unable to see the beam in his own eye. Hypocrite!

The boat was only 20 feet long but very seaworthy, considering the size. You put that on the ocean, and it was like a mote in the eye of God, a speck on the landscape.

V-Eats’ inventive and technically savvy fare is a good addition to the vegan palate—an adventure for the vegan and meat-eating alike and a mote in the eye of steak-city Dallas.

Already, the nation, planet, and solar system—not to mention the seven Earth-like satellites orbiting the star TRAPPIST-1—had endured forty days and forty nights of The Donald’s vacuous (trống rỗng, ngớ ngẩn, ngây dại, ngây ngô) gaggles (đám người ngồi lê đôi mách, đám người ồn ào), mendacious (sai sự thật, láo, điêu, xuyên tạc) brags (khoe khoang khoác lác), vainglorious (đầy tính dương dương tự đắc, khoe khoang) tweets and virulent (độc ác, hiểm độc, cực kỳ có hại, làm chết người) proclamations (tuyên bố). Yet, even before his address to Congress and the wider nation began, Trump’s historically abysmal (khủng khiếp, kinh khủng; sâu không dò được, thăm thẳm) approval ratings had clawed their way back toward fifty-fifty, and more than three-fourths of Americans of both parties were expressing their agreement with the statement: “Donald Trump will bring real change to Washington.” Whether that change will be cathartic (thuốc tẩy nhẹ) or catastrophic (thảm khốc, thê thảm) is a mote in the eye of each person affected.

"Tear a strip off" nghĩa là gì?

'Tear a strip off (someone)' nghĩa là mắng nhiếc ai thậm tệ vì phạm lỗi lầm hoặc hành vi sai trái.

Ví dụ
Toyah hides under Imran's desk as Nick comes in to tear a strip off him for the way he treated Leanne.

He's since lived in New York and now, ten years on, he's ready to tear a strip off Silicon Valley's tech culture but not 'hate on the tech itself'.

“Alun was a very wise and sensible guy who was very politically savvy (hiểu biết, lương tri). If I raised a concern about an issue with Radice’s approach he wouldn’t tear a strip off the CEO, but instead used the information to approach the situation carefully,” says Williams. “That approach often helped the company arrive at a better decision,” he adds.

For those of us who thought the media was being a bit tough on old Brian “Saxonwold Shebeen” Molefe for his unsavoury (ghê tởm, ô nhục, nhơ nhuốc) snouting as Eskom CEO, three High Court judges have now confirmed the most dismal (buồn thảm, tối tăm, ảm đạm) view of his and his board’s behaviour. Not only must he pay back his illegal pension millions, but the court tore a strip off him and others like him, ordering him to pay his and his adversary’s full legal costs.

"A gleam in her eye" nghĩa là gì?

'A gleam in someone's eye' = tia hy vọng trong mắt ai; nét mặt (rạng rỡ) thể hiện sự vui vẻ, thích thú, hoặc biết bí mật.

Ví dụ
He wore a smile and a gleam in his eye — no hiding under a hat and dark glasses — from the moment he walked on stage, and why not?

Big Ben had a gleam in his eye when reminiscing (hồi tưởng, nhớ lại, kể về quá khứ) about his childhood hero, joking Elway had such a big arm “he could throw the ball through the car wash, and it wouldn’t get wet.”

At half-time, however, the Stanley Rivers coach, Joey Chambers, brings his players in tight and, with a gleam in his eye, tells them quietly: ‘When he gets the ball next time, just let him go through.’

In just two to four weeks, Holmes should be back up and running at full speed. He is going to Inova Mount Vernon for his surgery. Around 30 other people also got chosen for free services this year. "To be able to work a full shift without any pain," Holmes said with a gleam in his eye. "To put on shoes. To bend over. To go back to school. To just enjoying my life."

"Catch her eye" nghĩa là gì?

'Catch somebody's eye' = catch the eye of (someone) nghĩa là thu hút sự chú ý của ai (giao tiếp bằng ánh mắt); thu hút sự quan tâm của ai (vì hấp dẫn, dễ chịu...).

Ví dụ
Kate paints hidden compositions (bố cục; kết cấu) that catch her eye because of their beauty, historical past and interesting aspects.

She spends a lot of time exploring the world around her - the mesmerizing (thôi miên; mê hoặc, quyến rũ) shapes and colors that catch her eye, but McKinley sees the world differently than most.

She also admitted that a man could easily catch her eye by riding up to her in a muscle (cơ bắp) car — or on a dirt bike — while sporting a Metallica t-shirt and some “questionable (có vấn đề, còn phải bàn cãi) tattoos (hình xăm).”

THE two vintage magazines with the words 'SWIM - A quarterly of the CSC Penang' clearly emblazoned (ca ngợi, tán dương; vẽ rõ nét (như) trên huy hiệu) across their front covers catch my eye during one of my regular visits to the Lorong Kulit Flea Market in Penang. CSC is the acronym for the Chinese Swimming Club. These magazines, in any condition, are not easy to come by and the 1948 publication date makes them both rare (hiếm) and desirable (đáng thèm muốn, đáng ao ước, đáng khát khao).

"Cast her eyes down" nghĩa là gì?

'Cast eyes down' = to tilt one's head or gaze downward (Usually a sign of shame or to appear not to have seen someone.) -> nghĩa là cúi mặt xuống, cúi gằm mặt... (vì xấu hổ, giả vờ không thấy ai đó).

Ví dụ
In the school cafeteria, Mahilum cradled her temples and cast her eyes down to her Bible.

As McLaughlin cast her eyes down and attempted to defend herself against a man well across the line when it comes to appropriate behaviour, muted laughter was heard from her colleagues.

Dianne Alfaro sat in a pew (hàng ghế dài trong nhà thờ) in the back of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, her head bowed during Mass on Sunday morning. She cast her eyes down as the hymn (bài thánh ca) “Jerusalem My Happy Home” swelled around her. As the words “Hosanna in the highest!” echoed in the cathedral (nhà thờ lớn), she never looked up. That is, until she finished buying a pair of black boots (đôi ủng đen) off the internet on her iPhone. “At some point, the priest during the Mass says, ‘Lift up your hearts.’ He does not say, ‘Lift up your cellphones to take pictures,’” Pope Francis said last week during a general audience at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, where he urged Catholics to leave their phones home.

'Can't take (one's) eyes off sb/sth' nghĩa là không thể rời mắt khỏi ai/cái gì, vì họ/điều đó quá đẹp, hấp dẫn, thú vị, dễ chịu...

Ví dụ
Preeta blushes (đỏ mặt (vì thẹn, bối rối...); ánh hồng, nét ửng đỏ; liếc nhìn) and just can’t take her eyes off Karan.

I can’t take my eyes off Deepika because of how happy she looks. We are loving these inside pictures and we are keeping our eyes glued to the screens for more coming our way.

I can’t take my eyes off this pit (hố, hầm bẫy). I try imagining the 10,000-plus human bodies burning underneath the ground as they laid here on top of their friends and family members, awaiting their death.

'By an eyelash' nghĩa là chênh lệch cực ngắn, cách biệt rất nhỏ (về khoảng cách, thời gian, chiến thắng...).

Ví dụ
Phillips was safe at first by an eyelash and shockingly ended up scoring later in the inning (lượt chơi của một cầu thủ; lúc cờ đến tay, cơ hội đến tay, thời kỳ cầm quyền).

After some agonizing moments, it was determined through video review Johnson nipped Ciulla by an eyelash — one-hundredth of a second, to be exact. Johnson’s official time was 55.29 seconds. Ciulla’s was 55.30.

Red Sox second baseman Brandon Phillips raced to his right, scooped (vốc, hất lên) up the ball and fired to first. Donaldson raced down the first base line and beat the throw by an eyelash – a sign his calf is back 100 percent.

In a very close toss-up race that adds to the increasingly strong Democratic House performance tonight, Annapolis grad Elaine Luria has defeated freshman congressman Scott Taylor by an eyelash in the military-heavy Second District of Virginia.
