"My future looks bright" nghĩa là gì?

Đời đẹp như hoa. Photo by Rodion Kutsaev

"(One's) future looks bright" = Tương lai trông có vẻ sáng sủa -> Ý là sau này mình có tương lai tốt đẹp, thành công và đầy triển vọng.

Ví dụ
Emy Flor likes to say one thing to people who ask for her help in borrowing money so they can purchase a home. “Not everyone needs to buy a home to prove that you have a direction in life or that your future looks bright,” Flor told the Georgia Straight in a phone interview.

They want to impress me, take their own confidence and say ‘Oh yeah, I was in camp with Whyte and I did alright against him, my future looks bright’. They’re bringing it to me hard, no question. They’re making me alert and breathing new life into me, forcing me to work harder but train smarter, too. It’s hard but a good kind of hard – these guys don’t play no games!

Emilia Clarke played the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen for eight glorious seasons on Game of Thrones. Many people can’t imagine her in any other role and will always know her as Khaleesi. Clarke is a household name now and her future looks bright. In a recent interview, she revealed what she learned from playing the very formidable (ghê gớm, kinh khủng) and strong Daenerys Targaryen.

"Not in Kansas anymore" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: madeleine ragsdale on Unsplash

"Not in Kansas anymore" = không còn ở Kansas nữa đâu -> nghĩa là ở trong môi trường hoàn toàn xa lạ, không thoải mái.

Ví dụ
We're definitely not in Kansas anymore, as the halls (sảnh) of the Las Vegas Convention Center pulsed with all stripes of futuristic (tương lai) tech.

You’re not in Kansas anymore, so please, make an effort. Most clubs ask that you come dressed smart casual, or upscale chic. That means NO JEANS or rips (quần rách), leave your sandals and flip flops at home and don’t wear hats or excessive jewellery (trang sức). Goes without saying, but wife-beater shirts on men will not be welcomed.

“We're not in Kansas anymore Toto!!” the Crescent City CHP office stated on social media. “Do not underestimate (coi thường) the power of this storm!

"Stare in the face" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ ơi, ai kia ak? Photo by  Zach Vessels

"Stare (someone or something) in the face" = Nhìn thẳng/trực tiếp vào mặt ai mà không chớp mắt; đương đầu hoặc đối mặt với một vấn đề một cách trực tiếp.

Ví dụ
As the Proteas stare a massive defeat in the face, their coach takes responsibility and says his skipper isn’t retiring anytime soon.

If they lived amongst constituents, experienced more or less the same services day in day out, had the poor state of infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng) stare them in the face every day, would they require to be roused (khích động) into action by protests?

But any time I wear a smartwatch, I feel completely trapped. It's easy enough for me to just ignore my phone when it buzzes in my pocket and check back later, but when the notification is staring me in the face from right on my wrist (cổ tay), it's harder to ignore. It's right there. And on especially busy days where I'm constantly getting notifications from emails, texts, social media, and so on (usually during trade shows like CES), I catch myself staring at my wrist more than I ever stare at my phone.

"Steal a look" nghĩa là gì?

"Steal a look (at someone or something)" = Trộm ánh mắt -> Nhìn ai/cái gì một cách nhanh chóng, dè dặt và lén lút.

Ví dụ
With extravagant gowns (áo dài quá cao) (looking at you, JLo!) and sleek, sharp suits, these couples know how to steal a look or two when it comes to dressing up. Whether they’re at a red carpet event, an awards ceremony or an after party, these Latinx celebrity couples (các cặp đôi người nổi tiếng) sure know how to be the best-dressed in every occasion.

Imagine this–you just dropped the top back, you’re driving through the city and you quickly steal a look at your sweetheart in the passenger seat. Crystallized sun-droplets dance across your faces, while the sweet Los Angeles air billows against your two-piece silk garb (quần áo, cách ăn mặc). You just pulled up to the cookout, and are greeted by the sublime (tuyệt vời) scent of barbecue, and Arin Ray’s Phases II reverberating (vang dội, lẫy lừng) from the backyard speakers.

If true, there are some interesting implications for Hygiea itself. The asteroid (hành tinh nhỏ) would have a notably different composition than Vesta or Ceres and might resemble a rubble pile covered with a layer of regolith (tầng phong hóa) rather than a true asteroid. It’s not clear if these findings will persuade NASA to devote more resources to puzzling out this mystery; a dwarf planet (hành tinh người lùn) designation would definitely be a bump for Hygiea’s overall profile. NASA has an upcoming mission to 15 Psyche planned, so it’s possible that we might be able to steal a look at Hygiea depending on their respective orbital positions (vị trí quỹ đạo) when the Psyche mission deploys.

"Take a long hard look at" nghĩa là gì?

Test ly cafe đầu tay. Photo by  Battlecreek Coffee Roasters

"Take a long hard look at" = Kiểm tra/xem/suy nghĩ thật kỹ, thật lâu và cẩn thận.

Ví dụ
I seriously think #ThisMorning needs to take a long hard look at yourselves!! Samantha Markle slagging off her sister today for your ratings!

It makes no difference, though. Even if they win on Sunday, it doesn't detract (lấy đi, gièm pha) from the fact that United are such a distance off, they need to take a long, hard look at what's going on at that club.

Under former general manager John Dorsey, while several splashy moves were made to improve the Browns, the hijacking (vụ không tặc) of the teams future in terms of draft picks and depth were an expense too great. As Stefanski comes in and looks to right the ship, you can fully expect him to take a long hard look at every option, whether that be moving on from players currently on the roster, or acquiring players he's familiar with.

"Take one look at" nghĩa là gì?

Xem sách có viết thiếu chữ nào không. Photo by  Markus Spiske

"Take one look at (someone or something)" = Kiểm tra kỹ lưỡng ai/cái gì một cách nhanh chóng và như thám tử/phong cách kỵ sĩ.

Ví dụ
As early as the 1770s, Abigail Adams was urging her husband to “remember the ladies.” Take one look at the Constitution, and it’s pretty easy to see he did not. A century later, in 1872, Victoria Woodhull ran for president of the United States. Did you know that? Probably not, because our culture still struggles to remember the ladies.

All you have to do is take one look at the Galaxy Fold to know that, as a consumer product, foldables (có thể gấp lại) aren't quite there yet. We've seen plenty of concepts from companies like TCL, too, but even those are far off from being in our hands. The good news is we know that a handful of foldables will come out in 2020 and some of them look pretty neat.

You would like to think that even if the president of the United States decided to go through with a back-channel inquiry (sự điều tra, thẩm vấn) to the Ukrainian government to see if he could get them to investigate the Bidens, he would take one look at Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman and say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. These guys look like the most oafish henchmen (tay sai/người hậu cần ngu ngốc, đần độn) since Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckardt went after Nancy Kerrigan. You wouldn’t trust these guys to pick up a take-out lunch order, much less use them to execute a secret and politically sensitive request of a foreign government.”

"Things are looking up" nghĩa là gì?

Coffee time. Photo by  Jason Blackeye

"Things are looking up" = Mọi điều đang trở nên khả thi, đang cải thiện và có thêm hy vọng.

Ví dụ
But things are looking up. In 2018, 1,183 US companies in business for at least two years and with at least 10 employees installed new CEOs, according to the annual Women CEO Report. Of those, 264, or 22.3 percent, were women, up from 18 percent in 2017.

Already, things are looking up. In the southern most town of Kawthaung, which borders Thailand, there are plans to open an international airport, which would improve air connectivity to the region. Memories Group, one of the most established high-end tourism companies in Myanmar, backs this plan. Its CEO Cyrus Pun has set his sights on the Mergui Archipelago.

Those that have been following Arrow over the last two seasons know that Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara) has lived a tough life full of hardship. She never knew her father, was estranged (bị xa lánh, ly thân) from her mother and was separated from her brother at birth. However, now that "Crisis on Infinite Earths" has restarted the Arrowverse, things are looking up for Blackstar.

"You look a little peaked" nghĩa là gì?

Back to the past. Photo by  The New York Public Library

"You look a little peaked" = Trông bạn hơi héo hon, tiều tụy.

Ví dụ
'It was such a sweet shift in our relationships because originally, it was all pranks and teasing each other. And here I am pregnant (có thai), so it’s like pulling out my chair and just making sure I have enough water and, "Are you feeling okay? You look a little peaked." "I’m fine.”'

The sponsor of the legislation, Kathy Tran, was asked if her bill could permit a woman to receive an abortion (phá thai) even during labor, provided a doctor would certify her mental health was “impaired (suy yếu, khiếm khuyết).” The answer was “yes.” Furthermore, Ms. Tran’s bill proposed to lower the number of certifying doctors from three to one and the standard from “substantially and irredeemably (tuyệt vọng, không thể cứu vãn) impair” to “impair.” Call it the “you look a little peaked to me” standard.

My name is Kate, and I'm a germaphobe. I won't shake your hand if you look a little peaked, and I'll discreetly move away if you cough on the subway. I'm an expert at elbowing open a swinging door, as well as knuckling my way through an ATM transaction. The arrival of my daughter four years ago seems to have shifted my functional phobia (ám ảnh, sợ hãi) into overdrive. One afternoon, as I sanitized (làm vệ sinh, sát trùng) every page of a children's board book from the library, I began to worry that I'd crossed a line.

"Wax and wane" nghĩa là gì?

"Wax and wane" -> nghĩa là tăng rồi giảm, giảm rồi tăng; thăng trầm, thịnh suy.

Ví dụ
The symptoms (triệu chứng) of bronchitis (viêm phế quản) are similar, regardless of which type causes the disease. However, chronic bronchitis does not go away, although symptoms can wax and wane.

But the details of the agreement suggest that there remains considerable scope for friction (va chạm, xích mích) between the two sides, and Moody’s continues to expect tensions between China and the US to wax and wane in the years ahead.

This is hardly the first time Trump has shown interest in defining his 2020 opponent. He has, for instance, been calling Warren “Pocahontas” (or, as he put it in his latest tweet on the subject, “Pocahontus”) for years; his off-color campaign (chiến dịch) to depict (mô tả) her as dishonest for claiming Native American ancestry tends to wax and wane with her position in the polls.

"On the outside, looking in" nghĩa là gì?

"On the outside, looking in" = Chỉ biết đứng ở ngoài nhìn thôi -> Bị loại trừ khỏi nhóm/tổ chức hoặc hoạt động mình muốn tham gia.

Ví dụ
“Klobuchar has a decent (tử tế, tốt) organization, but because she’s on the outside looking in and is making small gains, [she’s] the one who could end up having her chances hurt the most,” Murray said.

"It's huge," said Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson, who has goals in each of his last two games. "We've been able to string together a few wins here. To be able to go into the break with three more would be huge. We're still on the outside looking in, so every point is important."

The next three seasons would be miserable for the Cats as they quickly went back to their losing ways. It’s not that they had awful seasons – they were just seeming to be that team that was always on the outside looking in. As they continued to miss out on postseason play, the Panthers became active in the 2019 offseason in order to get back into the playoff picture. Now, this season, they have a big chance ahead of them after the All-Star break.

"Look the other way" nghĩa là gì?

"Look the other way" = Hướng theo lối khác -> Cố tình không chú ý tới việc làm sai trái; làm trái quy định; làm ngơ về việc liên quan tới trách nhiệm của mình.

Ví dụ
The government, the officials and the regulators know of this cheating by the millers, but they look the other way instead of taking any action.

“I ask [Romney] to look into his conscience and think about the people that he represents, to not look the other way,” said MoveOn organizer Laurie Woodward Garcia. “There is no justice in a nation that looks the other way and ignores evidence.”

When your preferred party is in power, you will be tempted to look the other way when Congress exercises unconstitutional powers. But, come next election, the other party will be in power — and Congress will retain those same unconstitutional powers. Repeat this cycle for a century or so and you end up with a government that intrudes (xâm phạm) into people’s lives in any way it wants. We would do well to remind our congressional overlords that they work for us, and the rules by which they should do so are clearly articulated in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.

"Look sideways at" nghĩa là gì?

"Look sideways at (someone or something)" = Nhìn sang một bên -> Xem hoặc nhìn ai/cái gì với thái độ nghi ngờ và không tán thành.

Ví dụ
Competition is a measuring element; it is a benchmark (tiêu chuẩn) to determine if your actions are well on track. Therefore, customer acquisition requires that you also look sideways at what your competition is doing, in which scenario (kịch bản, viễn cảnh) it moves and communicates.

People are in denial about the experience of entering a slow-motion breakdown; they can only look sideways at the smoke as it comes into focus for the second summer in a row. Climate breakdown is becoming our reality. A common question, half-panicked, half-resigned, asks: is this the new normal?

As the world prepares to enter into a new decade, we’d be remiss if we didn’t revel (liên hoan, say sưa) in nostalgia (hoài niệm) about some of our favorite things from the last ten years. With that idea in mind, some of The Root’s talented (and hilarious) staff decided to share their hot takes on all things black from the 2010s—and what a black decade it was! Believe it or not, Barack Obama was our president, Patti LaBelle changed the pie game as we knew it, and Jordan Peele made us all look sideways at people who stir their spoons in teacups, all within the last decade.

"Look in on" nghĩa là gì?

"Look in on" = Ghé thăm ai/xem cái gì; tới gần để xem hoặc kiểm tra.

Ví dụ
"When I do go away on deployment I have to get my friends to look in on her and some of my relatives to keep in contact with her," he said.

The 53rd annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is in full swing, and whether your in town or thousands of miles away, you can look in on some of the action with StateCollege.com's Arts Fest webcam.

We’ve got one suggestion: Make a beeline (đường thẳng trực tiếp) for the nursery, where you can look in on all the mamas and babies at this year’s show. On a recent visit, photographer RJ Sangosti met 11 tiny piglets (heo con) that, let’s face it, just shot to the top of your 2020 Stock Show must-see list.

"Look down at" nghĩa là gì?

"Look down at (someone or something)" = Liếc nhìn thoáng qua, tỏ ra vẻ kẻ cả, xem thường người khác và coi mình hơn hẳn.

Ví dụ
An old joke says it’s always a good day when you wake up and can look down at the grass instead of looking up at it.

So if I’m able to find my happiness through music and he’s able to see that, then he’ll see that that’s what living your true life is. But there is no metaphor, there’s no words, there’s no song, there’s no nothing that can describe what it feels like to look down at this person that you’ve made and see them looking back at you. How this little person that’s farting (đánh rắm) and blowing bubbles (thổi bong bóng, nhổ bọt) of spit in his mouth, is someone I respect so much. He has inspired me.”

It is a labor of love; when Cormier’s daily routine of investigating major crimes in Pawtucket ends, her cold-case work begins, virtually all on her own time. “I joke with people I’m not in this job for the income, I’m in it for the outcome,” she says in a way that tells you she’s not really joking at all. Many faces in her office look down at Cormier, Christine Cole’s most of all, her bright eyes that of a little girl who will forever be ten years old. “I look at her face every day,” says Cormier. “I look at her face all the time and, as a mother, that hits me hard.”

"Put through the ringer" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: nikko macaspac on Unsplash

"Put someone/something through the ringer" -> nghĩa là bắt ai hoặc cái gì phải trải qua khổ cực, đau đớn hoặc chỉ trích.

Ví dụ
Just a week before its nationwide (toàn quốc) release, Sarmad Khoosat’s upcoming film, Zindagi Tamasha, is being put through the ringer, even though the director has complied (tuân theo) with every demand of the censor board on two prior occasions, before receiving the NOC (No Objection Certificate).

In 2017, his collaboration (hợp tác) on the Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi club-banger, Despacito, took him to his favored chart placement. But solo Justin hasn't had a single in the top tier (tốp đầu) since 2016's undeniably infectious hits, Love Yourself and Sorry. With all chart semantics aside, Bieber has been put through the ringer the past few years - and not just musically.

“I put him through the ringer sometimes and I think it built up his mental toughness,(sức mạnh tinh thần)” Rahn said.

"Lock, stock and barrel" nghĩa là gì?

I'm ok Photo by Yogendra Singh from Pexels

"Lock, stock and barrel" đây là tên của 3 bộ phận trên một khẩu súng gồm khóa nòng,báng và nòng súng -> hoàn toàn, toàn bộ không sót thứ gì.

Ví dụ
It’s the feeling that next time we’ll catch them acting, next time we’ll see the artifice (sự khéo léo) and the technique rather than being transported lock, stock and barrel into the psyche (tinh thần) of the person they’ve created.

The story goes that while stopping at a gas station one day he met Gustavo Olguin, a Mexican cook selling fritos, an extruded fried corn snack. The idea interested Doolin and seizing the opportunity, he purchased the tiny business lock, stock and barrel, complete with customer list.

Narrow Band IoT Market 2019-2024 report offers a lock stock and barrel worth of the marketplace to make lucid decisions (quyết định sáng suốt). The report begins with an overview of the Narrow Band IoT and its definitions. The market report engulfs idiosyncratic market gauges identified with market size, generation, income, utilization, CAGR, net edge, cost, and furthermore key factors.

"Look daggers at" nghĩa là gì?

"Look daggers (dao găm) at (one)" = nhìn giận dữ, nhìn hầm hầm; nhìn trừng trừng.

Ví dụ
In the stills, Ahn Dan Te and Shin Yeon Hwa look daggers at each other across the meeting room table and fill the room with tension.

“They look daggers at you, and then look sweetly up at the dear little girl in the grandstand (khán đài), and then daggers at you. I mean at me, and by the time they pitch, you, I mean me, are ready to swing at anything.”

In an interview with Mehr News on May 13 the commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said “As long as the naval forces (lực lượng hải quân) of the Islamic Republic are protecting its borders (biên giới), the enemies (quân thù, địch) will never dare to even look daggers at the Iranian nation.”

"Look as if you have seen a ghost" nghĩa là gì?

Có bóng chi đen đen đó? Photo by Monica Silva

"Look as if you have seen a ghost" = Trông như người mới gặp con ma nào -> Nhìn rất kinh khủng, bị shock nặng, mặt mày tái mép vì sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
Edward came home that night. "That is certainly not the face I wish to see when I come home. You look as if you have seen a ghost," He laughed.

I am not sure of the time, but believe it was perhaps just after 9pm. I opened the door and went in, shut the door and stood with my back to it. Someone in the hut said “Christ Jimmy, what’s the matter with you? You look as if you have seen a ghost”.

I am sure that everyone is well aware of the impact NAB has had over the last couple of years. It has struck fear in the hearts of many, so much and so that the second they hear the name NAB or see NAB written on a piece of paper they become silent and look as if they have seen a ghost.

"Look as if butter wouldn't melt in mouth" nghĩa là gì?

"Look as if butter wouldn't melt in (one's) mouth" = Trông như vẻ miếng bơ không tan chảy trong miệng -> làm ra bộ đoan trang, ngây thơ; màu mè

Ví dụ
'Don't be fooled by that English schoolgirl look she had in those days, all angles and planes, no curves and rounds,' Bogarde once told me. 'She looked as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, but she probably grasped the meaning of that kinky stuff better than I did.'

“The thing is, Rachael is posher than me, and very ‘normal’ looking – looks as if butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth,” says Hammond, who is best known for her role as Donna Yates in EastEnders. “Whereas I’m a four-foot woman in a wheelchair. So people make a lot of assumptions about both of us and we can have a lot of fun with that.”

The first was Safeena, the female lead of Gully Boy, played by the incandescent (sáng chói) Alia Bhatt. In the movie, you first see her through the prism (lăng kính) of her hijab (một tấm khăn trùm đầu và ngực). So, even if it is at subliminal (tiềm thức) level, you expect her to portray a traditional Muslim girl who prays five times a day and ends up marrying the man her parents chose for her. But before that thought can even coalesce (liên kết) in your mind, the character springs a surprise on you. She has been in a relationship with a young man in the neighbourhood for years now – conducting her affair with admirable sneakiness and breathtaking chutzpah (sự cả gan trơ tráo), spinning tales even as she looks as if butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.

"Look a picture" nghĩa là gì?

Bắt trọn từng khoảnh khắc. Photo by  W A T A R I

"Look a picture" = Đẹp như tranh -> Rất đẹp, hấp dẫn và lôi cuốn mắt nhìn.

Ví dụ
A wake is to be held at the Royal British Legion Club, Lucknow Street, just by Fratton Bridge. As to the photograph, it looks like it is a steam-driven pump to be used alongside the fire engines. The firemen look a picture, don’t they?

The eye-catching, delicate pom-poms not only look a picture but carry a heavenly fragrance (hương thơm ngát) and provide a valuable nectar (mật hoa) source for friendly garden insects (côn trùng) that emerge in milder (êm dịu, dễ chịu) weather.

The countryside is bursting with vibrancy (sự rung động, tiếng vang) and colours, growth is surging ahead and even the worst fields look a picture at the minute. It's still a long way until harvest, but every field is 'ditch to ditch' with healthy crops, there are no poor or bare patches to be seen and crop potential, as far as we can say at this time of the year, looks to be excellent.
