"Rock the boat" nghĩa là gì?

If you 'rock the boat' (khiến thuyền chao đảo), you do or say something that will upset people or cause problems -> nghĩa là nói hoặc làm điều gì khiến người khác phiền lòng hoặc gây rắc rối.

Ví dụ
Sena, which is playing a second fiddle (đóng vai trò thứ yếu) at the Centre and in Maharashtra while sharing power with BJP, also sent a message that the party will not rock the boat and destabilise (gây mất ổn định) the government.

In the face of a man in a position of power abusing that power and thinking he was doing nothing wrong, I kept my head down and I stirred the cocktail in my mixing glass. I didn’t want to rock the boat, either. I was new, and I wanted people to like me.

In extreme cases, Francis said, clergy can display what psychologists call “the dark triad”: narcissism* (tự yêu mình, quá chú ý chăm sóc vẻ đẹp của mình), Machiavellianism and psychopathy (bệnh thái nhân cách). But he also warned that more rigorous (khắt khe, nghiêm ngặt) testing could exacerbate (làm trầm trọng thêm) a trend in the Church of England to recruit conventional clergy who do not rock the boat.

Public sector net borrowing figures out this morning, are unlikely to rock the boat and today could prove to be another day where Sterling is driven largely by external factors (yếu tố ngoại lai). Next week, investors will begin to focus on the next Bank of England meeting in the first week of August, which is shaping up to be a fairly significant risk event for the Pound.

"Miss the boat" nghĩa là gì?

việt nam ko thể lỡ lần nữa... Photo courtesy Helge V. Keitel.

'Miss the boat' = lỡ chuyến tàu -> nghĩa là để mất cơ hội quý báu.

Ví dụ
If you want to make six figures and help out people in need, there’s no better starting point than a degree in labor law. Ensuring that those who work every day to put meals on their family’s table are safe and properly compensated (đền bù xứng đáng) is no small task. Law grads are landing jobs at a higher pace than in previous years, and there’s no reason for you to miss the boat.

"Despite being on the cusp of a new wave of broadcasting technology, there seems to be less enthusiasm compared to what happened previously. I believe it may be due to more people abandoning (từ bỏ) conventional (truyền thống) TV for YouTube and the various commercial formats streamed via the internet. We're now in an era where the viewer can select the programs he wants to see, and watch them when he wants, so TV's raison d'etre has been diminishing". The TV manufacturers and broadcasters better get their act together, and soon, or they'll miss the boat, Shukan Jitsuwa concludes.

As I started to write about onboarding, I thought about how people miss the boat on how much impact it has. That made me ask: Why? When organizations spend millions of hours, brain cells and dollars on their recruiting efforts, why do they drop the ball on a no-brainer opportunity to keep that positive momentum going? That’s when I realized the reason: Onboarding is the second impression. Nobody has been repeating for years that the second impression matters as much as the first. Maybe that’s why some organizations give onboarding minimal attention even when the numbers prove how essential it is.

"Sail in the same boat" nghĩa là gì?

'Sail in the same boat' nghĩa là hành động chung, cùng hành động.

Ví dụ
Condemning government (lên án chính phủ) while sailing in the same boat reeks of hypocrisy (đạo đức giả). It would be unacceptable and sad, if the allegations are true that funds were abused (lạm dụng), misappropriated (lấy tiền một cách sai trái để sử dụng cho mình; biển thủ) or diverted (làm trệch hướng, thay đổi mục đích).

For the first three years, whenever Ouma gave blood for a VLT, he had to wait for one month before he could get his results. And sailing in the same boat were the more than one million HIV positive (dương tính) patients across the country.

This emotional delusion (ảo tưởng cảm xúc) created by media (truyền thông) is not the real cause (nguyên nhân thực sự) of this suicide (tự tử). More important is the fact that this young man saw such a little value in his existence that he could sacrifice it for such a trivial reason. It is this phenomenon that needs our serious attention, especially because most of us average people are sailing in the same boat.

"Be in the same boat" nghĩa là gì?

sóng cả vẫn vững tay chèo... Photo courtesy leyla.a.

'Be in the same boat' = cùng trên một chiếc thuyền -> nghĩa là cùng trong tình huống éo le giống ai đó (be in the same unfortunate circumstances as others); cùng cảnh ngộ.

Ví dụ
I know a few other schools are waiting for the first four games, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're in the same boat.

A fan responded to Teigen’s video with a link to Medolac — a place to buy donated breast milk — which is a fantastic option for moms in the same boat as Teigen.

This means that we have to work harder together, adding “We are in the same boat, so let’s make sure we row in the same direction and remain the market leaders.”

The Prince George Chamber of Commerce is in the same boat as many others when it comes to their feelings on the NDP government’s first year in office. It’s been a rocky relationship, to say the least between the two after a CFIB Report Card this morning issued a “D” grade due to a number of policies impacting the sector. One of which is the Employer Health Tax set to take effect on January 1st.

"Lightning never strikes twice in the same place" nghĩa là gì?

Lightnings over Dresden Inner City. Photo courtesy Andre Klärner.

'Lightning never strikes twice in the same place' = sét chẳng đánh ai hai lần -> nghĩa là vận rủi không bao giờ xảy ra tương tự với cùng người đó lần hai (misfortune does not occur twice in the same way to the same person).

Ví dụ
THEY say lightning never strikes twice, but, through no fault of his own, young Sydney auctioneer Jake Moore yesterday found himself at the centre of another controversy.

Lightning never strikes twice in the same place, the old adage goes. But the appearance of teenage prodigy Rodrygo at Santos shows that the Vila Belmiro side can still produce electric attacking talents on an incredibly regular basis.

They say lightning never strikes twice, but sometimes winning lottery tickets do. A Methuen man has won $1 million on a scratch ticket for the second time in 2018. The Massachusetts State Lottery says Jason Williams visited lottery headquarters Tuesday to claim the $1 million prize he won playing the “200X” $30 instant game.

The myth goes that lightning never strikes twice in the same place. Don't tell Russell Knox that. During the final round of the European Tour's Irish Open, Knox needed to sink about a 50-foot putt for birdie in order to force a potential playoff with Ryan Fox. Following Fox's birdie putt sliding by for the win, the two headed back to the 18th tee for a playoff. As fate would have it, Knox then placed his approach shot in almost the exact same spot on the playoff hole.

"In the same breath" nghĩa là gì?

out of breath (hết cả hơi). Photo courtesy Lazurite.

'In the same (next) breath' nghĩa là nói một câu/nhận xét mà 2 ý trái ngược hẳn nhau (of a statement, immediately or almost immediately after something else has been stated, often something contradictory); vừa nói thế này, lại thế kia; nghĩa khác là đồng thời, một hơi, một mạch (= at the same time).

Ví dụ
The state BJP has condemned (lên án) the attack (vụ tấn công), but in the same breath held the organisers responsible.

Governor Dannel Malloy joined advocates and the legal team. He applauded the U.S. District Court ruling declaring the children’s separation from their parents unconstitutional (vi hiến), and in the same breath, made a suggestion to the federal government (chính quyền liên bang).

He may not be the easiest person to work for, yet the fruits of Bezos’s labour are evident in Amazon becoming not just a retail powerhouse, but gaining the more prestigious title of Silicon Valley tech leader, now mentioned in the same breath as Apple and Google (dare anyone who’s dropped paper books for the Kindle to bet that that’s not the future of reading).

Since the 2016 campaign Trump has forcefully rejected any suggestion of Russian support for his candidacy. After his electoral victory, which caught even Trump by surprise, the president reluctantly (miễn cưỡng) acknowledged (thừa nhận) Russian meddling (can thiệp) in the election (bầu cử) — the unanimous consensus (đồng thuận, nhất trí) of the intelligence community (cộng đồng tình báo) — while in the same breath suggesting other countries could be responsible.

"The same old story" nghĩa là gì?

đội tuyển bóng đá argentina không nhảy được điệu tango trên sân, vì, như thường lệ, quá phụ thuộc vào messi. Photo courtesy Ferran Legaz.

'The same old story' nghĩa là chuyện rất thường xảy ra (what is about to be or has just been mentioned is nothing new; it is a situation that happens repeatedly); 'chuyện thường ngày ở huyện'.

Ví dụ
Will It Be The Same Old Story In Wimbledon Men's Singles In 2018?

Before a ball was kicked there was a real fear that the Three Lions would crash out early and it would be the same old story - but their run to the semis has seen the country fall in love with international football again.

The Curse of Champions continued as Germany crashed out of the tournament in the group stages with their defeat to Mexico being the lowest ebb. Argentina, owing to their firepower in every part of the pitch were expected to shine, even after scraping through the qualifiers. However, what unravelled was the same old story of overdependence on Messi who for once seemed out of sorts thus losing out to France in one of the most pulsating matches of the Cup.

There is huge excitement among Indian Netflix audiences this month. After Netflix India’s original movies “Love Per Square Foot” and “Lust Stories”, the first-ever Netflix original Indian web series “Sacred Games” released on July 6. From the trailer, the plot looked simple – the same old story of a gangster’s rise and fall. We’ve seen it in Bollywood before. But after watching the series, one can’t resist getting attached to it and wanting more. Its influence rises with every episode, and at the end of the season, we are left dumbstruck.

"On the same wavelength as" nghĩa là gì?

không cùng sóng với Trump. Photo courtesy Fibonacci Blue.

'On the same wavelength as' nghĩa là suy nghĩ và có quyền lợi (như ai) và do vậy hiểu được người đó; 'bắt sóng nhau'.

Ví dụ
On the other side of the global barricade, millions of French supporters of Marine Le Pen’s far right are on the same wavelength as Trump on issues like immigration and borders.

Pjaca skips and shimmies (nhảy điệu simmi) down the right flank (cánh phải), foxing Lucas Hernandez with a couple of stepovers. He tries to pick out Sime Vrsalko, but the Croatia right-back isn’t on the same wavelength as (không hiểu ý) his team-mate (đồng đội) and a promising move breaks down.

In neighboring Syria, Beijing has already made sure it is positioning itself as a major actor in the nation’s reconstruction, alongside Iran and Russia. China sees Syria upgraded as a BRI node. Now, couple that with a parliamentary report at the Bundestag in Berlin ruling that the US presence in Syria is illegal. This means that for the leading EU nation, Damascus cannot possibly be characterized as a pariah (người sống ngoài lề xã hội, bị xã hội bỏ rơi; người hạ đẳng) anymore. The EU could be on the same wavelength as Russia, which is working with Iran and Turkey for a Syria solution in Astana, and China, which supports the Astana process. What next? The EU in Syria copying China’s policy for the Arab world?

"Not to be in the same street as" nghĩa là gì?

'Not to be in the same street as' nghĩa là kém tài ai, không so được với ai (to be completely different, usually worse, in quality than).

He ran well. He is in the same street as them, he just came up a bit short today. He needs a good gallop. It was a bit tough, the opposition, but he ran well. There is the race at Goodwood, the Lennox, but he is not bad over six and you can play around. You have a flirtation with these sort of races, but you can always drop him down a cog and win with him. Maybe he is just short of the best, but he is not bad.

"Speak the same language" nghĩa là gì?

nhiều màu da, nhưng cùng chung một ngôn ngữ, đó là bóng đá. Photo courtesy kremlin.ru.

'Speak the same language' nghĩa là có chung tiếng nói, hợp nhau (understand one another as a result of shared opinions or values).

Ví dụ
Choosing wine requires knowledge that young people don't have, Westrelin said. That's why they seek information from people they trust (which may very well not be the brand itself), someone who speaks the same language, and someone they can relate to.

Memphis believes in Gasol, his talent, and experience. According to the 33-year old defensive stopper, he is fortunate: “I’m lucky to have a very good relationship with the owner. We are honest with each other, very sincere. We speak the same language, in that regard. We know each other very well, and we have a close relationship.”

Success in social entrepreneurship is contingent upon solid relationships between all stakeholders. Through mutual empathy and understanding, your executive team, Board of Directors, employees, funders, and partners need to align with your social mission. Your mission is what ultimately impacts your end beneficiaries. In another layer of complexity, your end beneficiaries are likely not the partners or funders you are selling to. In this context, ensuring that all your stakeholders are speaking the same language goes far beyond literal language translation.

"On the same page" nghĩa là gì?

hai tâm hồn cùng chung ý nghĩ. Photo courtesy Pedro Ribeiro Simões.

'On the same page' = (of two or more people) in agreement -> nghĩa là đồng ý, nhất trí với nhau (về vấn đề gì); nghĩ giống nhau.

Ví dụ
US and South Korea 'on the same page,' vice foreign minister says.

A lot of people apparently are on the same page. "This is the first day of the year we've rented every single boat we have in service already before noon. That's impressive for us," harbormaster Shelby Allman said.

Since you're allowed to start taking benefits as early as age 62, you're actually looking at an eight-year window to claim Social Security. But if you and your partner don't get on the same page with regard to choosing a filing age, you could miss the chance to really maximize your benefits.

If we have a game plan, and we stick with it, we need everybody to be on the same page. I don’t think every game we’ve played everyone’s been on the same page. Sometimes it’s individual errors, lack of concentration … we need to cut out that kind of stuff, and have a well-rounded professional performance from the guys.

"I don't care a farthing" nghĩa là gì?

đội tuyển bóng đá quốc gia có vô địch world cup 2018 cũng chẳng quan tâm... Photo courtesy FaceMePLS.

'I don't care a farthing' = tôi cóc cần.

Ví dụ
The East India Company maintained a small fleet in Bombay habour to deter attacks, but as ensign John Burnell wrote in 1710: “Angria doth not care a farthing…sometimes braving and threatening them in the Port.”

The media grind all this grist far too finely and often not too fairly. Most of us wait for results, knowing the process is carried out by well-intended legislators of limited talent, along with a few too many zealous masochists and some possibly certifiable pathological psyches. Best practices indicate most of us are better adjusted if we ignore all that stuff until something does look likely to be resolved. Case in point: The 2016 Media Election began sometime this spring. The 2016 People's Election well get serious next August. Gotta understand money, motives and ratings. We should not care a farthing right now.

What dangers you can make us scorn (khinh miệt, khinh rẻ)! With ale (rượu bia), we fear no evil; With whisky, we’ll face the Devil! The ales so swam in Tam’s head, Fair play, he didn’t care a farthing for devils. But Maggie stood, right sore astonished, Till, by the heel and hand admonished, She ventured forward on the light; And, vow! Tom saw an incredible sight! Warlocks and witches in a dance: No cotillion (điệu nhảy côticông), brand new from France, But hornpipes, jigs, strathspeys, and reels, Put life and mettle in their heels.

"Not worth a brass farthing" nghĩa là gì?

con gái muốn chơi gì là tùy, các nhà làm luật không nghĩa lý gì ở đây... Photo courtesy Brian Evans.

'Not worth a brass farthing' có từ farthing là đồng pha-đin = 1/4 penny -> cụm từ này nghĩa là chẳng đáng một xu (completely worthless or useless; having little or no value).

Ví dụ
Would playing football have kept all that from happening? Probably not, but how the hell do I know? I do know I didn’t want to find out. My advice may not be worth a brass farthing, but parents should make the decision on their own. If legislators don’t want their children playing football, don’t allow it. Just don’t tell us what to do with ours.

With a few honourable exceptions, virtually the entire political class has been plotting to either overturn the Leave vote, or water it down so significantly that it becomes meaningless. Neither of the main parties’ manifesto commitments, to implement properly the wishes of the 17.4 million people who voted to take back control of our laws, trade deals and borders, was worth a brass farthing.

Still, it’s interesting to observe Makal using the whole of the final chapter to admit his appreciation of “primitive” Anatolian folk songs: “How deeply they touch one, though it may be that they are not worth a brass farthing to our bright modern musicians.” It’s a revelation of sorts. After 190 pages of railing against the ignorance and backwardness of village life, Makal is finally able to resign himself: “Perhaps what makes me weep is the very fact that the world is not worth joy or grief, and yet one cannot help but weep for it.”

"Consult my pillow" nghĩa là gì?

Rồi nhiều đêm em nằm suy nghĩ. Về những phút giây như vẫn còn đây. Rồi lại thấy anh về trong mộng. Nắm tay em có nào hay... Photo courtesy w00mer.

'Consult one's pillow' nghĩa là nằm vắt tay lên trán mà suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
He frequently consulting his pillow how to behave himself on such important occasions.

Speaking in an interview with X-fm 95.1, Richard Quashigah said it was time Hon Teye Nyaunu “consulted his pillow and reflected on his actions and inactions, because to declare that you would work to ensure the downfall of the party sounds very strange”.

As this promise did not cause the young lady to "jump out her skin" or saddle, it is highly probable that she did not perceive any great harm in it; nor did it occur to her then, or when consulting her pillow at night, that she violated female propriety, by answering, simply, and somewhat emphatically, "I hope you will."

Notwithstanding Miss Sally was not so much enamoured as her spark, yet, when she consulted her pillow on the subject, it raised some emotions in her mind, which she had never experienced before; and, being much perplexed with doubts and fears, she was once going to communicate her thoughts to her fellow prentice who lay with her; but thinking that might be of dangerous consequence to the young gentleman, as probably the affair might, by that means, reach his father’s ears, she then, upon mature consideration, chose not to entrust, even her bosom friend, with the secret.

"Take the piss out of sb/sth" nghĩa là gì?

Manneken Pis (Flemish, means “little man pee”). Photo courtesy Arild Finne Nybø.

'Take the piss out of somebody/something' nghĩa là lấy ai/cái gì ra làm trò cười (to take liberties at the expense of others, or to be joking, or to be unreasonable; mock, tease, joke, ridicule, or scoff.)

Ví dụ
Foil Arms and Hog perfectly take the piss out of the English football press.

We've done it lads. We've finally done it. After thirty plus years of hurt, we've finally started to properly take the piss out of ourselves and go full meta with the whole England hype train.

Everyone loves it when celebs are prepared to take the piss out of themselves, and if Ryan Reynolds has proved anything over the years, it's that he knows he's as good a target for savage (có ác ý, thù nghịch) trolling as anyone.

After the video clip went viral, people online have been lining up to take the piss out of the driver as well, with one saying that it looked like the man sat at the bar was getting a free Lamborghini with his drink. That'd be quite nice, wouldn't it?

"Marry in haste, repent at leisure" nghĩa là gì?

cũng có ngoại lệ chứ nhỉ, 3 tháng... Photo courtesy Flashback Tunisie.

'Marry in haste, repent at leisure' nghĩa là lập gia đình hấp tấp ắt sẽ hối hận dài dài (those who rush impetuously into marriage may spend a long time regretting having done so).

Ví dụ
The old saying ‘marry in haste, repent at leisure’ could be applied equally to tenants: it’s much, much better to take your time in choosing suitable people and ensure the property is fully ready than to rush into a tenancy.

Marry in haste, repent at leisure, the old saying goes. It turns out that the same applies to divorce. People who push for a rapid divorce settlement, typically men whose infidelity ended their marriage, often get a poor deal that they come to regret, lawyers have said.

We’re shorthanded and overwhelmed, a key employee has moved within the company, opted for a fresh start elsewhere or taken a leave of absence, maybe business has suddenly ramped up with a signing of a new client or the winning of a large contract — we need help in the form of a body who can step into the role today and do the job now. Someone to solve our pain. Desperate, we hire the person who we perceive to be the most qualified to fill the void and for a time, they do. ‘Marry in haste, repent at leisure’ goes the adage. Because we hired someone at the top of the curve, within months they are bored and looking around for a new suitor.

"More haste less speed" nghĩa là gì?

slow is more difficult... Photo courtesy The Skyline View.

'More haste less speed' nghĩa là thà chậm mà chắc, dục tốc bất đạt (you make better progress with a task if you don't try to do it too quickly).

Ví dụ
Suddenly, the world tips into a spiral of catching up, childhood adages (cách ngôn, ngạn ngữ) about “more haste less speed” bounce around your head, and you commence an ultimately fruitless search for bread to make toast.

With an early draw, Olivia took a more haste less speed approach over the newly-shortened course as she claimed first place in 58.26 seconds. Olivia has been working hard throughout the year at her junior events and her dedication (cống hiến, hiến dâng) paid off.

"More haste, less speed. It's reasonable that everyone's anxiously hoping China will become stronger and more developed as soon as possible. But we need to take our time and be focused. Only through concentrated practice can we get to the fruit. It's not contradictory at all to our Chinese dream of achieving a better-off future,"

'In the wilderness' có từ wilderness là vùng hoang vu, vùng bỏ hoang, nơi vắng vẻ tiêu điều, hoang tàn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không còn ở địa vị quan trọng nữa, không còn ảnh hưởng nữa (về chính trị); mờ nhạt trên chính trường (If politicians or other well-known people spend time in the wilderness, they are not in an influential position or very active in their profession for that time).

Ví dụ
For so long he had waited in the wilderness for a recall to Test cricket.

Paine has only been appointed for this series and regained his place in the ODI side in January after nearly seven years in the wilderness.

That same discipline was on show in India’s Intercontinental Cup triumph as Halder worked himself back into the national team fold after a year in the wilderness.

Republicans are poised to be completely and utterly lost in the wilderness for a full generation if President Trump miscalculates and therefore misplays his current power gambit (thí quân để mở đường cho tướng).
