"Issue a call for" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jim Reardan on Unsplash

"Issue a call for" -> nghĩa là công khai đòi hỏi hoặc yêu cầu điều gì.

Ví dụ
Thames Valley Police (TVP) and Slough Borough Council (SBC) have joined forces to issue a call for residents to limit the spread of COVID-19 and abide by (tuân theo) lockdown rules. The force and local authority are launching the appeal as cases continue to be high in the town, with the rate of infection standing at 1,019 per 100,000 people.

Then city staff will issue a call for proposals (đề xuất) for a service provider to construct and manage the project, and operate the housing units.

Top ultra-Orthodox rabbi Chaim Kanievsky will tomorrow issue a call for extremist (kẻ cực đoan) factions (bè phái) to stop their violent protests against the enforcement of lockdown rules, Channel 12 news reports.

“We want to be clear and issue a call for as much help as possible in the community,” he said. "The more compliant (dễ dãi) we can be with lockdown, the more we do to protect people in social care.”

"Force the issue" nghĩa là gì?

Ép tui nhiều quá, tui ra ngoài chơi cho mọi người vừa lòng. Photo by Oliver Schwendener on Unsplash

"Force the issue" -> nghĩa là bắt buộc phải đưa ra quyết định ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ
“We were able to get in the lane with some of our offense and force the issue on them,” Crotts said. “When we went on our runs, our defense really locked down and played pretty good. I thought overall we played well. Something I talked to the girls about is when we got out to that 15-, 17-point lead, we kept having a little bit of a mental letdown (thất vọng). That’s something we talked about that we are going to address is when you get a 15-, 17-point lead to keep putting your foot down and not let up.”

And after President Biden’s inauguration (nhậm chức), his executive (sắc lệnh) order to rejoin the Paris climate agreement and his plan to unveil a climate initiative (sáng kiến) on Wednesday that includes banning (cấm) new oil and gas drilling on federal (liên bang) land, it appears that governments could soon force the issue of corporate climate risk disclosures (phơi bày).

And if facilities are not voluntarily (tình nguyện) working towards low-carbon targets, regulations will force the issue. The Government’s environmental taxes and tax reliefs are there to encourage businesses to operate in a more environmentally friendly way.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball during the second quarter. Clay County continues to force the issue by attempting shots from behind the perimeter (vành đai) while knocking down only one, while North Laurel managed to extend its lead to 29-19 at halftime after seeing Hailee Valentine and Emily Sizemore score four points apiece.

"Fudge the issue" nghĩa là gì?

"Fudge the issue" có fudge là né tránh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là né tránh vấn đề, tránh không làm gì.

Ví dụ
But the fact Wade’s default (vắng mặt) response to this not-very-significant question was to fudge the issue – rather than simply say, quite reasonably, ‘well, no, we’re not’ – is bizarrely telling.

What relevance will current residence have? The temptation (ham muốn) will be to fudge the issue by widespread issuance of dual nationality but this should be resisted as it is fraught with risk, particularly for Britain, of “benefits arbitrage” with those of dual nationality being able to access the most attractive welfare environment.

Sometimes they know the name of your electricity provider or bank; sometimes they don’t know but happen to guess correctly; sometimes they fudge the issue by writing some generic (chung kiểu cách) text that’s just enough to get your interest.

Police and politicians fudge the issue for fear of not being politically correct. But until they accept violent crime is being carried out by Somali and Arab gangs, they won’t be able to tackle (giải quyết) it. It’s a lesson for the UK too.

"Feel all the feels" nghĩa là gì?

Bao giờ được nghỉ tết?? Photo by Duangphorn Wiriya on Unsplash

"Feel all the feels" -> nghĩa là trải qua nhiều cung bậc cảm xúc mãnh liệt.

Ví dụ
So my encouragement (lời động viên) to anyone out there chasing your dreams…feel all the feels. Be excited…be nervous…but most important be expectant (mong đợi) and opened to growth throughout the process. If you are hesitant to take that step…do it! You’ll never know where it might lead you until you take that first step.

There are gut-wrenching historical dramas, epic romances that will make you feel all the feels, devastatingly (sắc bén) serious stories of the human condition—basically everything a secondhand drama queen or king could want.

The Salt-N-Pepa Lifetime biopic (phim về cuộc đời của người có thật) premiered on Lifetime on Jan. 23, and the reenactment (tái hiện) of the lives of one of the most popular '80s-'90s female rap groups is bound to make Gen-Xers feel all the feels. Salt-N-Pepa stars Laila Odom as Sandra "Pepa" Denton, G.G. Townson as Cheryl "Salt" James, and Monique Jasmine Paul as Dee Dee "DJ Spinderella."

Today is a new day and I definitely feel less 'off' but going with the flow and expecting to feel all the feels again soon. Hormones are no joke.

“Be on the in” -> nghĩa là tiếp cận, nắm được thông tin nội bộ hoặc bí mật.

Ví dụ
He's not the one of insiders, so please be careful if he aims to be on the in the whole system.

I think she's a spy on my conduct (theo dõi hành động của tôi). I feel like she's gonna be on the in something.

They feel unsafe to work with that policewoman. Maybe they're afraid of being on the in their secret information.

“Be in the money” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in the money” -> nghĩa là có rất nhiều tiền, được thưởng nhiều tiền.

Ví dụ
The owner is not obliged to exercise the option; she will do so only when the option is “in the money”: ie, when the strike price is breached.

“We know that our room for error is very small and you need to concentrate for long periods in the game to be in the money. "You can get away with a lot of things at the Wanderers or SuperSport Park where there is pace and bounce‚ but on the sub-continent room for error is very small.”

Considering the above, we have to be optimistic regarding Pakistan’s fiscal framework (cơ cấu tài chính) and our ability to reduce the rising debt-to-GDP ratio. Whenever the country decides to push hard, the upside is unlimited. That we are ‘in the money’ is a contention we should be surely comfortable with. The good news from our analysis is that finance is not the real issue; never has been, never will be. It is our ability to organize ourselves to get hold of the finance that has been, is and will remain the real issue.

“Be in the club” -> nghĩa là đang mang thai.

Ví dụ
"I'm [scared] if I am in the club, just like, to being caring about somebody, it's so big responsibility. Which I am not ready for."

Shawn Johnson East announced that she is in the club, expecting her second child with husband Andrew East — see her baby bump pics.

“Be in your black books” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in one’s black books” = cho vào sổ đen -> nghĩa là mất cảm tình, không ưa nổi ai.

Ví dụ
He and his friends invited me to come over and watch while I was in their black books.

I must be in their black books. And I can't blame them." Jamie Knight Knight has performed at two Champions League finals.

Depending on one’s political bent (khuynh hướng chính trị), there is a host of reasons to dislike the current Australian prime minister. Scott Morrison landed solidly in my black books in March 2019 when he used International Women’s Day as an opportunity to assure Australian men that they should not have to make way for women’s empowerment — completely missing the point that the only men that women wish to replace in the workforce are the incompetent and/or violent ones, and eliciting my enduring sympathy for his daughters.

“Be in poor voice” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in poor voice” = giọng yếu -> nghĩa là hát không hay.

Ví dụ
On Dec. 30, 1835 Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” made its premiere with the admired soprano (giọng nữ cao) Maria Malibran. The opera did not get a good reception due to the two sopranos being in poor voice and as a result of Malibran ignoring the censors (kiểm duyệt). The result was an opera that would be ignored for 130 years and one that would not be presented until the 20th century.

“We have waited in vain (vô ích) for two nights,” sings the Doctor in the last act of Verdi’s Macbeth, words that took on a peculiar resonance (âm vang lạ kỳ, riêng biệt) for the audience at the Metropolitan Opera last Wednesday. The first two nights of the company’s season comprised a listless new Figaro and a revival of La Bohème hobbled by a soprano in poor voice, both exercises in futility (vô ích, không hiệu quả). But then came Macbeth, worth the wait of not just two nights but of two whole seasons.

There was no material from the new Jacksons' album, "Victory,"—perhaps because, disappointingly, it is such a spotty (bất thường, không đồng đều) effort. Jermaine Jackson, a solo recording artist in his own right, did perform three of his songs; but he was in poor voice, and often seemed off pitch.

“Be in floods" nghĩa là gì?

“Be in floods (of tears)” -> nghĩa là nước mắt giàn giụa, khóc rất nhiều, thường xuyên.

Ví dụ
This accumulation (chất đống, tích tụ) of frustrations seemed to intensify (làm mãnh liệt, dữ dội, sâu sắc) his emotions upon finally winning today. ”I thought I’d be in floods of tears, but I’m in shock,” he said at the finish, before promptly bursting into tears, the significance of his achievement apparently just sinking in.

“I am in floods of tears after meeting them, I was just so excited,” she told us. “It was better than my wildest dreams; it has given me a lift and the push I need to fight the cancer.” After being diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer (được chẩn đoán bị ung thư buồng trứng) in October 2018, Mairéad dreamed of meeting Westlife before she died, telling us: “I just would love to meet them before I go to heaven. "I don’t know how long I have but they said they will keep giving me chemo (hóa trị) after chemo to try to keep it at bay for as long as they can but they can’t say.”

A widow was left in 'floods of tears' after a council worker accused her of lying about her husband's recent death. Anita Foy rang up Salford Council's tax office last week to report her husband's passing, but was greeted on the phone by a 'rude' and 'straight-to-the-point' employee. After informing the council of the death, the council worker allegedly responded: "sorry, where's he gone?" to which Mrs Foy replied: "Heaven I think, love". Following the call, Mrs Foy went about her business, but was called back by the same employee around an hour later.

“Be in a transport of delight” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in a transport of delight” có transport là cảm xúc mãnh liệt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất vui mừng, hạnh phúc và hoan hỉ.

Ví dụ
Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, is in a transport of delight after retaining his seat at the December 7 elections.

This may bore you. It’s been so long since we’ve been together that I’ve grown self-conscious about what I say. I must miss you, Woof, because I’m miserably lonely with hundreds of good friends about me. During one of our rowdy (om sòm, ầm ĩ)“in-love-with-each-other” phases, it was your habit to pique (xúc phạm, khêu gợi) me by asking, “Why do you love me?” I’ve finally hit on a rational answer and I think it’s the right one. I have a number of wild dreams which come and go with the green in the leaves. Once conceived I tell you about them. If they’re good dreams you take them up with a flood of enthusiasm and we’re very soon shrieking (la, kêu thét) to each other about them in a transport of delight much greater than if the dream were realized. Then we sink back, logically in each other’s arms, happily exhausted by a swift trip to heaven and back.

The exhibition begins with her ‘first success’: a portrait of Annie Philpot, the daughter of a local family, who managed to stay still without laughing after an appeal to her feelings and a warning about ‘the waste of poor Mrs Cameron’s chemicals and strength if she moved’. In her fragmentary (từng đoạn) 1874 autobiography (tự truyện) Annals of my Glass House, Cameron later wrote that she was ‘in a transport of delight’, and ‘ran all over the house to search for gifts for the child’. Her reaction was partly a reflection of the fact that children were among the hardest subjects to photograph without them dissolving into a fidgety blur (viết nhơ, sự không rõ ràng đến bồn chồn/sốt ruột). ‘You don’t seem to know how to fix a restless child,’ Lewis Carroll told the artist Emily Gertrude Thomson in 1893, ‘I wedge her into the corner of a room, if standing, or into the angle of a sofa, if lying down.’

“Be on the bum” nghĩa là gì?

“Be on the bum” có bum là kẻ ăn vô công rồi nghề, hạng tồi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ăn bám; nghĩa khác là làm việc, hoạt động sai hoặc bị hư hỏng.

Ví dụ
"A nappy (tã lót) could be on the bum for 30 minutes and then ends up in the bin and takes 500 years for a disposable nappy to break down," she said.

And the starvation army they play, And they sing and they clap and they pray. Till they get all your coin on the drum. Then they tell you when you are on the bum.

“Why don’t you write good short stories about Europe or out West or when you were on the bum or war or that sort of thing? Why don’t you write one about just things that you and I know? Write one about what the Anita’s seen. You could put in enough social life to make it appeal to everybody.”

“Be shitting a brick” nghĩa là gì?

“Be shitting a brick” = vãi ra quần -> nghĩa (lóng) là quá khiếp sợ, lo lắng.

Ví dụ
Any sane man in the same situation opposite Roy Keane would be shitting a brick, but a young Rooney clearly had no fear whatsoever! Advert.

With the track completed, we then had to go in and record the vocal. I went into the studio and Bob lowered the lights to get me in the mood. Just then, in walked Gene and Paul, and they sat down on the couch in front of the board. I was shitting a brick, all alone in there, about to sing KISS’s first ballad. Meanwhile, those two fuckfaces were sitting in the booth stone-faced like they were at the zoo watching an animal through the glass.

Let’s be honest here: They don’t have nearly enough footage to turn this into a complete episode. If the extended repelling down a mountain sequence didn’t tip you off, maybe it was the full-ass performance from Air Supply that literally zero people asked for. When we had a full 20 minutes left to introduce Hannah B. as the next Bachelorette and they found the time to allow her a full-ass rose ceremony? This was bad, y’all. Also, do you think Caelynn is shitting a brick?

“Be quids in” nghĩa là gì?

“Be quids in” = được mấy pao -> nghĩa (lóng) là được lời to.

Ví dụ
We could all benefit from a bit of extra cash at the start of the year. And if you're the lucky owner of one of 2020's rare coins, you could be quids in if you decided to sell it online.

A mystery man from Lanarkshire is quids in after winning £10,000 a month for a year on the National Lottery. The lucky man - known only as Mr W - won the life-changing prize by matching the five main numbers in the Set For Life draw on Monday, July 6. And who knows, the man could be a resident of the East Kilbride or Strathaven areas. He celebrated his fantastic win by splashing the cash on a swimming pool for his holiday home.

The rarest and most valuable 50p coins have been revealed - and they could be worth up to £316. Coin site ChangeChecker has a list of the coins to watch out for and if you find any of the ones below in your pocket you could be quids in. The value of the coin depends on the demand from collectors. In general, the lower the mintage (tiền đúc) the rarer the coin, and the rarer the coin the more valuable it is. That said, ChangeChecker's scarcity (khan hiếm, khó tìm) index also takes into account two other key pieces of information.

"I don't want to alarm you, but" nghĩa là gì?

"I don't want to alarm you, but" = tôi không muốn làm bạn lo lắng, nhưng -> câu dùng để thông báo tin xấu.

Ví dụ
I don’t want to alarm you, but this is a big one: you are going to lose your mind. We should explore this idea by way of a story. A man fills the sink (bồn rửa) to do the washing-up. He leaves the tap running while he attends to other business about the house. You know how it is. One child discovers the stairs. Another throws a bowl of plums down the toilet. Never a dull moment.

I don’t want to alarm you, but there’s a bug in your kettle. Technically, it’s a worm (con sâu) in the firmware of your Fellow electronic kettle, but it was put there intentionally (có chủ ý). What is the brand’s purpose for the worm? Are they trying to steal all your brewing data to sell to the Russians? Are they listening to our conversations around the coffee counter to get ideas for new products?

I don’t want to alarm you, but I’m going to present a statistic (thông số) that’s pretty alarming. Fiorentina’s top three strikers—Dušan Vlahović, Christian Kouamé, and Patrick Cutrone—have combined for 2 goals across 1182 minutes in Serie A this season.

My husband Peter called for an ambulance and I remember him describing (miêu tả) how my face was drooping down one side, then I heard the operator say to Peter: “I don’t want to alarm you but I think he’s having a stroke (đột quỵ).” I owe Peter my life, because I could have died without his quick actions.

"Have got it in for him" nghĩa là gì?

"Have got it in for him" -> nghĩa là liên tục chỉ trích, quấy rối hay cố làm hại ai (do thù oán).

Ví dụ
The 42-year-old former glamour model implied that her neighbours have 'got it in for her' as they keep reporting her to the authorities.

She believes her neighbours have "got it in for her" after police officers turned up at the posh five-bedroom home she is currently renting.

"He thinks they will slam him with all the time they can put on him," the 53-year-old said, predicting at least another 16 years behind bars. He’s fully aware that the powers that be have got it in for him.

However, he has not presented any evidence or counter-polling to substantiate his claims that the surveys in question were somehow rigged or manufactured. But that hasn’t stopped him from pushing the claim and also allegations the US media have got it in for him.

"Give up the cause" nghĩa là gì?

Luôn luôn có hi vọng. Photo by Dayne Topkin on Unsplash

"Give up the cause" = từ bỏ lý lẽ -> nghĩa là nhân nhượng hoặc đầu hàng, từ bỏ lập trường của bản thân.

Ví dụ
Being stubborn (cứng đầu) and not wanting to give up the cause, no matter how hopeless it seems, might sound depressing. But to me, it shows the strength of teenagers and young adults. Even though the task ahead of us may seem impossible, we are still prioritizing (ưu tiên) it and tackling it head-on because anything less than a future that ensures climate justice for everyone is unacceptable.

The key is to persevere (bảo vệ) and never give up the cause despite the number of setbacks (khó khăn). The exasperation (mọi thứ trầm trọng hơn) which afflicts (làm khổ sở) you at times will ease as you notice the fruits of your labours starting to appear. Indisputable evidence of improvement will bring a sense of relief.

He also said it was important to reschedule the event because local businesses and charities depend on the funds (quỹ) it raises. "We're not going to give up the cause, we're just going to do it in a safer manner," O'Dwyer said.

Fernandes threaded through a perfect pass for his French team mate, who was denied by Foster’s excellent block. But Martial did not give up the cause, retaining the ball, executing a drag back which put defender Etienne Capoue out of contention (lý lẽ) and then chipping a perfect finish over Foster.

"Show good cause" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

"Show good cause" -> nghĩa là chứng minh, cung cấp những lí do, động cơ hoặc mục đích chính đáng, hợp lý cho điều gì.

Ví dụ
But Saul and Black both hold term appointments which do not expire until 2025, meaning Biden must show good cause to remove them now. The White House has not announced its plans for the agency, but a confluence (ngã ba) of events Wednesday have fueled speculation (suy đoán) that Saul’s days atop (ở đỉnh) the Social Security Administration may be numbered.

However, a person who misses the deadline (hạn chót) but can show good cause for missing the due (hạn) date may still file an appeal. Good cause may include:
- circumstances (tình huống) beyond a person’s control, such as illness or injury
- delays from efforts to get supporting evidence
- a death or serious illness in a family

And, if you quit your job by your own choice, you can only collect unemployment (thất nghiệp) benefits if you can show good cause, McCamley said, meaning that you were dealing with an abusive employer, an unsafe workplace or work conditions that changed without your consent.

She did not show good cause for the delay in service. Nor did she explain why she had not sought more time to serve before the 90-day deadline expired. Plaintiff finally served the defendant (người bị kiện) more than a year after filing the complaint.

“Be in hand” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in hand” = trong lòng bàn tay, trong tầm tay -> nghĩa là ổn định và được kiểm soát.

Ví dụ
Our admin team is coordinating (điều phối) the delivery of food hampers for pupils entitled to free school meals. We have 33% disadvantaged pupils, so that’s a lot of hampers, but everything seems to be in hand.

Nearly half should be in hand by Friday, and the rest should arrive next week, spokeswoman Char Jackson said Wednesday. An additional 2,650 replacement devices for staffers should begin arriving next week — which will free up devices for students.

At the current pace of vaccination, if a meaningful number of hospitals dive in and achieve even modest consent rates, this study could enroll 30,000 participants in a handful of weeks and start generating insights in a few months. If we move on this question, and I can’t think of a more important one to prioritize (ưu tiên), preliminary (sơ bộ) data could be in hand by March.

“The dead hand of” nghĩa là gì?

“The dead hand of (something)” = bàn tay chết -> nghĩa là yếu tố/nhân tố ngăn cản sự tiến bộ/tiến triển.

Ví dụ
While Trump’s tenure (nhiệm kỳ) is drawing to a close, his judges will ensure that the dead hand of the Trump administration governs the nation for decades to come.

Nor is this exclusively the result of the dead hand of the past. As Winchester explains, “Since 2007 the amount of American land owned by these wealthy (giàu có) 100 has increased by 50 percent, and is showing no signs of slowing down.”

British businesses, and especially hauliers (người vận chuyển) or commercial fishermen, trying to cope with the dead-hand of Brexit may well scratch their heads and wonder how they swallowed Boris Johnson’s sunny-uplands, Britain-unchained guff.
