'Bring to a head' (shared via VOA) có một từ mới là head nghĩa là cái đầu. Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là đưa tới một chỗ rẽ quan trọng khiến tình hình phải thay đổi.

Ví dụ
“I have been trying to persuade my Dad to quit smoking, but he never made a serious effort to stop until last month. When he became short of breath (khó thở) playing with his grandson, he realized that his bad habit had to end. It brought to a head (Vụ việc này đã khiến ông nghĩ đến) his addiction to cigarettes. He’s been tobacco-free ever since.”

“Our best trained workers are all over 60 years old. And they’ve been leaving the company faster than they’re being replaced. The CEO ought to recognize what’s happening. Retirements are bringing our labor shortage problem to a head (Những vụ về hưu đang khiến cho tình trạng thiếu nhân công trở nên trầm trọng cần phải được giải quyết). So he’d better come up with a solution quickly.”

In a dramatic bid to end the stalemate (thế bế tắc) and bring matters to a head, Tsipras has decided to go for broke by calling a referendum (trưng cầu dân ý) on whether or not Greece should deign to accept the “humiliating” (sỉ nhục) terms of the extended economic lifeline.

The Western powers, to their shame, eventually brought matters to a head over the issue of free trade in the most self-evidently harmful product they sold, insisting on the right to the unrestricted importation of—from all the fruits of Western progress—opium.
