Ngựa thiêng ở đền Thần đạo Nhật Bản

Khi thăm quan một số đền Thần đạo lớn ở Nhật Bản, bạn sẽ thấy trong khuôn viên đền có một chuồng ngựa, ví dụ như Shinkyu-Sha ở đền Toshougu Shrine ở Nikko, hay trong bức ảnh hôm nay là Geku of Ise Grand Shrine ở thành phố Ise, tỉnh Mie, Nhật Bản.
Đây là truyền thống xa xưa của Nhật Bản bắt nguồn từ đồ hiến tế của một trong những Nhật hoàng đầu tiên dâng tới đền Kibune ở Kyoto. Trong năm nhiều mưa, đồ hiến tế của Nhật hoàng có một con ngựa trắng - như là lời cầu nguyện để trời ngừng mưa, còn trong năm hạn hán, đồ hiến tế là một con ngựa đen, với lời nguyện cầu mang mưa tới.

“The authors speculated that horses may simply have been applying an ancestral ability to read the facial expressions of their own species “onto a morphologically different species,” in this case, humans. These same University of Sussex scientists found last year that horses have 17 distinct facial expressions—more than dogs’ 16, or chimpanzees’ 14—many of which are similar to humans’ 27 facial movements, like creased brows or eyes widened in fear. (So far, this method of coding facial expressions hasn’t been applied to wild animals, and those that aren’t part of humans’ evolutionary lineage.)”
