'Get the short end of the stick' có một từ mới là short, nghĩa là ngắn. Người Mỹ dùng get the short end of the stick khi họ nhận được những gì ít hơn họ mong đợi, và cảm thấy bị chèn ép hay bị đối xử bất công.

Ví dụ
Poor (tội nghiệp) Donna! Last week was the third time that she had to work the late shift (ca đêm), but none of the other workers did. It was so unfair. She got the short end of the stick (bị thiệt thòi) once again. She might have to speak up (lên tiếng bênh vực quyền lợi) for herself.

Look how long housewives (bà nội trợ) were portrayed as morons (người đần độn). They got the short end of the stick. To watch a TV commercial from years ago, you’d think a woman’s highest ambition (tham vọng) was to get her husband’s shirt collars clean or to make desserts that were works of art (sản phẩm nghệ thuật)!

There’s nothing like illness to take away a sense of control, even if we often have less of it than we imagine. What people don’t like to think about is that you can do everything right—in life or in a treatment protocol—and still get the short end of the stick.
