"Toe the line" nghĩa là gì?

'Toe the line' (shared via VOA) có động từ to toe là dùng ngón chân để chạm vào một vật gì, và line là một lằn hay một vạch. 'Toe the line'có nghĩa là tuân theo ý muốn hay mệnh lệnh của cấp trên, cho dù mình không đồng ý với họ. Thành ngữ này bắt nguồn từ thế kỷ thứ 19 để nói về những người tham dự một cuộc chạy đua. Họ phải đặt ngón chân của họ vào vạch trên sân và đứng im cho tới khi được lệnh bắt đầu chạy.
