'On the shelf' có từ shelf là giá, kệ -> quẳng lên giá, xếp lên kệ, nghĩa là xếp xó, bỏ đi, không còn có ích nữa (đồ vật) (in a state of disuse or inactivity, out of consideration); và quá lữa, lỡ thì (con gái).

Ví dụ
Calgary Flames defender (hậu vệ) Ladislav Smid is on the shelf, so Tyler Wotherspoon was summoned (triệu tập) to take his blueline spot on the roster.

It’s hard to view Microsoft’s demonstration of its HoloLens and not think of Google’s struggling Glass product, whose interactive eyeglasses have been put back on the shelf.

East-west highway project still on the shelf: A program manager for a proposed $2.1 billion east-west highway that would connect two Canadian provinces said the privately funded project is still alive, but not a high priority.

Don tasked General Tommy Franks with updating the plans. Just after Christmas 2001, Tommy came to Crawford to brief me on Iraq. The plan on the shelf required a six-month buildup (xây dựng lực lượng) and four hundred thousand troops. The experience in Afghanistan was at the forefront of our minds. Thanks to new technology and innovative planning, we had destroyed the Taliban and closed the al Qaeda camps using far fewer troops.
