'Get a word in edgewise/edgeways' có từ edgewise = edgeway là từ phía bên cạnh, và vì thế có nghĩa là vội xen vào một lời nào (insert oneself into a conversation or express one's opinion despite competition from other speakers).
Ví dụ
If your date won't allow you to get a word in edgewise, it's not the right person for you.
The Republicans had no say. Will the GOP-controlled House and Senate get a word in edgewise before papers are signed? We don't know.
While the Zhivago kids don't make it easy to get a word in edgewise, their lightning-fast exchanges made for an entertaining gabfest (cuộc trao đổi kéo dài) filled with backstage (ở hậu trường) anecdotes (giai thoại), top-notch (xuất sắc) bickering, and some surprisingly sage words of wisdom.
Bono could be edgy (bực mình, cáu kỉnh), but never in a cynical (hoài nghi, yếm thế) or political way. When PEPFAR got off to a slow start, he came to see me in the Oval Office. “You’re the measurable results guy,” he said, “so where are the results?” I would have told him, but he wouldn’t let me get a word in edgewise. Once the program was up and running, he came back. “I’m sorry I doubted you,” he said. “By the way, do you know the U.S. government is now the world’s largest purchaser of condoms?” I laughed.
