Nearly 99 million years ago, two harvestmen (nhện chân dài)—known to some as daddy longlegs (nhện chân dài, còn gọi là con chôm chôm)—decided to have sex. Little did they know that their final act would still be preserved (bảo tồn) today, enshrined (cất giữ trân trọng) in amber (hổ phách) in striking detail. The fossil (hóa thạch), which shows one ancient (cổ xưa) arachnid (động vật thuộc lớp nhện) at the moment its penis (dương vật) was fully extended (cương hết cỡ) (above), offers a rare example of Cretaceous (kỉ Phấn trắng) copulation (giao hợp). Male harvestmen have a retractable (có thể kéo thụt vào) penis that spends most of its time tucked away (chui vào, rúc vào) inside its body—unfortunate for arachnologists, because these genitals are a great way to tell the difference between species. So this new mid-coitus (giữa lúc giao cấu) fossil gives researchers a unique look at how ancient harvestmen are related to the species that exist today—and just how these ancestors were different.
