'Go out on a limb' có từ limb là một cái chân, cái tay hay là một cành cây, 'Go out on a limb" nghĩa đen là trèo ra một cành cây rồi bị vướng vào đó khó leo xuống được; vì thế cụm từ này nghĩa là làm hay nói một điều gì khiến mình bị rơi vào một thế kẹt, bị chới với khó thoát ra được (in or into a dangerous or uncompromising position, where one is not joined or supported by anyone else; vulnerable; be put in a precarious position, become vulnerable, be put in a risky situation; be sticking one's neck out).
