'No cross, no crown' = no pain, no gain ("If you don't take pains you won't achieve anything") không có huấn luyện cực nhọc (pain), thì sẽ không đạt được (gain) mục đích; Gạo đem vào giã bao đau đớn/ Gạo giã xong rồi trắng tựa bông (có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim, khổ học thành tài); không đau, không ăn tiền (không đau, không đậu) :); to be a specifically Christian metaphor: "No earthly cross of metaphorical crucifixion, no heavenly crown of sainthood." Có người nói đùa "no cross, no crown" = "không cây thập giá, không vương miện" theo hàm ý "đừng nói chuyện tôn giáo và chính trị", nhưng không đúng vậy, chỉ là đùa thôi.

Ví dụ
The lesson of Singapore is "no pain, no gain", or as we say "no cross, no crown" and your team seems not to know this. Stay conscious, my friend!

In 1668, when he was only 24, Penn’s beliefs and outlandish comments landed him in the Tower of London. While in prison, he wrote “No Cross, No Crown,” to show the nature and discipline of the holy Cross of Christ and preach that denial of self is the only way to the Kingdom of God.

The Church says that masturbating for BOTH girls AND guys is WRONG and should thus obviously not be condoned. It's something that probably almost everyone (if not indeed everyone) does at least once or more times in their life but it's also a temptation that must not be acted upon. No pain, no gain. No cross, no crown. No work, no reward. So you can either keep deluding yourself with thinking you can call yourself a Catholic, while at the same time supporting issues that the Church EXPLICITLY forbids, or you can come clean and take your faith seriously. C'est tout ;~)

"No pain, no palm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown."
"No pain, no gain", "No guts, no glory". "No work, no reward."
"No pruning, no grapes; no grinding mill, no flour; no battle, no victory; no Cross, no Crown!"
"No laming, no naming, no struggle, no Promised Land; no cross, no crown".
