"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride" nghĩa là gì?

'If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride' = nếu những mong ước là ngựa, thì thằng ăn mày cũng sẽ cưỡi -> nghĩa là người ta thường có nhiều mong ước, nhưng chỉ ước thì chẳng có nghĩa lý gì (people make a lot of wishes, but wishing is useless).

Ví dụ
There is an old saying, if wishes were horses then beggars would ride. Personally I think 13 is far too young to be entering transgender therapy.

Kerry Sanders’ journalistic piece on Jose Diaz-Balart’s MSNBC show questioning whether Miami is the next Silicon Valley reminds me of an old proverb, “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.”

OPEC production quotas are calculated as fractions (phân số) of stated reserves (dự trữ). Again, at first glance, this seems like a great wish. If Venezuela’s reserves were re-calculated then they could just turn on the tap and produce enough for everyone, get rich and we’d all be happy, right? That’s what OPEC did to bankrupt the Soviet Union in the 1980s by driving down oil prices. But if wishes were horses then beggars would ride, and this is not the 1980s – when such a thing as spare capacity actually existed – and worldwide demand was twenty million barrels a day less than today.
