Sự thật

Calumny of Apelles, 1494–95, with "Truth" at left. Uffizi, Florence.
Botticelli made this painting (bức họa) on the description (miêu tả) of a painting by Apelles, a Greek painter (họa sĩ) of the Hellenistic Period (thời kỳ). Apelles' works (tác phẩm) have not survived (không tồn tại), but Lucian recorded (ghi chép) details (chi tiết) of one in his On Calumny: On the right of it sits Midas with very large ears, extending his hand to Slander (vu khống, vu cáo, phỉ báng) while she is still at some distance from him. Near him, on one side, stand two women—Ignorance (sự ngu dốt) and Suspicion (sự nghi ngờ, ngờ vực, hoài nghi). On the other side, Slander is coming up, a woman beautiful (đẹp) beyond measure (không bút nào tả xiết), but full of malignant (thích làm điều ác, hiểm ác, ác tính) passion (đam mê, say mê, tình cảm nồng nàn, sự giận dữ) and excitement (phấn khích), evincing (tỏ ra, chứng tỏ, biểu lộ) as she does fury (sự giận dữ điên cuồng và mãnh liệt, cơn thịnh nộ) and wrath (sự phẫn nộ, tức giận tột bậc) by carrying in her left hand a blazing (nóng rực, cháy sáng, rực sáng) torch (ngọn đuốc, nguồn cảm hứng) and with the other dragging (kéo lê) by the hair a young man who stretches (duỗi, vương) out his hands to heaven (thiên đường) and calls the gods (thiên thần) to witness (làm chứng, chứng kiến) his innocence (ngây thơ, vô tội). She is conducted (dẫn đường, hướng dẫn; chỉ huy, chỉ đạo, quản lý) by a pale (tái, nhợt nhạt, xanh xám) ugly man who has piercing eye and looks as if he had wasted away in long illness; he represents envy (sự ghen tị, đố kỵ). There are two women in attendance to Slander, one is Fraud (gian trá, lừa lọc) and the other Conspiracy (âm mưu). They are followed by a woman dressed in deep mourning (đồ tang), with black clothes all in tatters—she is Repentance (sự ăn năn, hối lỗi, ân hận). At all events, she is turning back with tears in her eyes and casting a stealthy (lén lút, vụng trộm, rón rén) glance (liếc nhìn, cái nhìn thoáng qua), full of shame (xấu hổ, tủi thẹn, ô danh, nỗi nhục), at Truth (sự thật), who is slowly approaching (đến gần, lại gần).
