"Slippery Slope" nghĩa là gì?

Từ slippery có nghĩa là trơn trượt và từ slope có nghĩa là con đường dốc. Về nghĩa đen, cụm từ này có nghĩa là con đường dốc trơn trượt khiến người ta dễ ngã. Vì thế, thành ngữ này được dùng để chỉ một chiều hướng hành động có thể dễ đưa đến thất bại hay tai họa.
Ví dụ
“I realize when my 12-year old took a bottle of perfume from a store without paying, she was shoplifting. But that doesn’t mean she’s heading down a slippery slope (trượt dài) towards a life of crime. She understands the seriousness of what she did. And she promised never to steal again.”
“The citizens are divided over whether to allow an amusement park to be built in our town. Supporters argue that it will bring entertainment and a needed source of tax revenue. Critics say we’d be getting on a slippery slope (sa vào tai họa). Before long, they contend, we could expect more and more traffic problems, and undesirable development; and the community’s quality of life would eventually be destroyed.”
