"Lower the Boom" nghĩa là gì?

Động từ to lower có nghĩa là hạ thấp xuống; boom có nghĩa là cái sào dài dùng để kéo căng buồm trên thuyền. Khi gặp gió mạnh, cái sào này có thể đung đưa rồi rơi xuống và đập vào những người ở trên thuyền. Vì thế 'lower the boom' có nghĩa là trừng phạt nặng.
Ví dụ
“We warned (cảnh báo) our teenage son not to come home late again. So when he returned after midnight, we were in the living room waiting. That’s when we lowered the boom (trừng phạt) on him. For the next month, he’d have to stay in (phải ở nhà) except for going to school. It was harsh (khắc nghiệt) but necessary punishment.”
“A friend of mine is stupid if he thinks he can avoid paying income taxes. Eventually the government will find out and then lower the boom on him. That means he’ll get a stiff fine. Well, that’s what happens when you don’t obey the law.”
