"Run the Gauntlet" nghĩa là gì?

Gauntlet có nghĩa là bao tay sắt. 'Run the gauntlet' có nghĩa là bị người khác hạch hỏi hay chỉ trích nặng nề. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ giới quân đội trong đầu thế kỷ thứ 17. Đó là ṃôt loại hình phạt theo đó binh sĩ mang vũ khí đứng thành hai hàng và đánh đập người phạm kỷ luật trong khi người đó chạy giữa hai hàng binh này. Sau này, run the gauntlet chỉ dùng để chỉ bất cứ sự chỉ trích hay đả kích nào.

“When I proposed that our high school eliminate (loại bỏ) soda machines in the building (trong trường), I thought I’d have everyone’s support. Instead, I was atttacked (bị chỉ trích) by many parents and teachers for taking away the students’ right (quyền) to choose what they wanted to drink. I never expected (không bao giờ nghĩ rằng) to run the gauntlet (bị đả kích) on that issue.”
“First, I had an in-depth (kĩ lưỡng) interview with the personnel director (giám đốc nhân sự). Then, I was asked to go over my resumé with the food department manager (quản lý ban thực phẩm). Finally, I got questioned at length (hạch hỏi dài dòng) by the head of the kitchen staff (đầu bếp trưởng). All of this so that I could get a job cooking food at the hotel. I certainly ran the gauntlet (trải qua mọi nỗi khó khăn) for that position”.
