"Brownie points" nghĩa là gì?

'Brownie points' (shared via VOA) có một từ mới là point, nghĩa là điểm. Vì các brownie (nữ hướng đạo sinh từ 8-11 tuổi) luôn luôn nhận được điểm tốt khi hoàn thành một công tác tốt, cho nên kể từ thập niên 1950 brownie points có nghĩa là điểm tốt cho một hành động tốt.
Ví dụ
Critics may not have valued Lady Bird Johnson as a glamorous (rực rỡ và quyến rũ) first lady like her predecessor (người tiền nhiệm), Jacqueline Kennedy. But she scored (ghi) major brownie points (điểm tốt) for beautifying (làm đẹp) the nation’s capital with flowers and trees. She’s also praised for making our highways more attractive.
To get ahead (thăng tiến) in our department, you have to produce results. Yet the new hire thinks he’s going to be recognized simply for staying late every night. The reality is that he’ll never win brownie points with the boss that way.
