"Cast in Stone" nghĩa là gì?

To cast nghĩa là đúc khuôn và stone nghĩa là đá. 'Thành ngữ này' có nghĩa là đúc khuôn, hay chạm, đục vào đá, tức là một điều gì cố định, không thay đổi được. Người Mỹ còn dùng set in stone, carved in stone, hay etched in stone cũng có cùng một nghĩa.

Ví dụ

“It seems like yesterday that my daughter was in kindergarten (mẫu giáo), and now she’s graduating (tốt nghiệp) from high school. Her class is celebrating with a graduation on June 10th. While I really want to attend, I’ll be on a business trip. And I understand the date of the ceremony can’t be changed. It’s cast in stone.”

“There’s a lot of confusion (ý kiến lẫn lộn) about wine. Should you only drink white wine with chicken and fish, and red wine with red meat? When it comes to deciding what goes together best, experts now say that there are no rules cast in stone. You should let your taste (khẩu vị) guide you and serve what you please.”
