"Down to the wire" nghĩa là gì?

'Down to the wire' có nghĩa là tới phút cuối cùng, hay chỗ cuối cùng. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ trường đua ngựa, nơi mà ngày xưa người ta thường chăng một sợi dây ở đích cuối cùng để xem con ngựa nào về nhất.
Ví dụ
Deadlines (hạn cuối) for filing college applications are fast approaching (đến gần) and my son hasn’t written his essays. He’d better hurry (làm gấp) because it’s getting down to the wire (hạn chót sắp tới nơi rồi). I don’t know why he’s waiting until the last minute. I hope he can still get into a good school.
Barbara decided months ago to participate (tham gia) in this year’s AIDS Walk (buổi đi bộ quyên tiền chống bệnh AIDS). But with just two days left before the event, she still hadn’t asked many people to sponsor (bảo trợ) her. Finding herself down to the wire, she sent an e-mail to everyone she knew. Fortunately, she received some generous pledges (cam kết bảo trợ), which raised lots of money.
