"Great white hope" nghĩa là gì?

'Great white hope' có hai từ mới là hope nghĩa là hy vọng, và white nghĩa là màu trắng. Thành ngữ này dùng để chỉ một người hay một vật được trù liệu sẽ thành công lớn. Nó xuất xứ từ đầu thế kỷ 19, khi một vô địch võ sĩ quyền Anh người da đen tên Jack Johnson dường như không thể bị đánh bại được. Great white hope được dùng để chỉ bất cứ đối thủ da trắng nào có thể thắng được anh Johnson. Ngày nay nó chỉ có nghĩa là bất cứ người hay vật gì có thể thành công lớn.
