'Keep under one’s hat' có một từ mới là hat nghĩa là cái mũ, cái nón. Keep under one's hat nghĩa là giữ một cái gì ở dưới nón, tức là giữ bí mật một điều gì.

Ví dụ

Nobody in the family knows that my sister is going to have a baby except (ngoại trừ) me. She told me not to tell anyone. For now, I’m keeping it under my hat. It will be our secret (chuyện bí mật) until she has a chance to make the announcement.
