"Fair and square" nghĩa là gì?

'Fair and square' có một từ mới là fair nghĩa là công bằng, hợp lý. Square ở đây là một tĩnh từ và có nghĩa là thật thà, trung thực. Vì thế fair and square dùng để chỉ tính công bằng, thẳng thắn...
Ví dụ
Talking about soccer brings back fond memories (kỉ niệm đẹp) of my high school days. Although there was one match (trận đấu) in particular I’ll never forget. The referee (trọng tài) made a series of bad calls (quyết định sai lầm) that cost my team a victory. He was not fair and square (không công bằng và trung thực chút nào).
There’s no reason to be angry (tức giận). The election for city council was fair and square. It was an honest contest (tranh cử ngay thẳng) and I simply lost. I congratulate my opponent.
