It’s overcast, cold and raining. Lord love a duck, it’s England, what do they expect? The only reason they ever had an Empire is that beastly (khó chịu) weather: they were looking for someplace with a little sun and something good to eat.
This origin is supported by the earliest example in a long-forgotten tale of 1907, The Wheel O’ Fortune, by Louis Tracy, a British journalist and prolific (viết nhiều) author: “‘Lord love a duck!’ he guffawed (cười hô hố). ‘If only I’d ha’ knowed, I could have told my missus (bà xã). It would have cheered her up for a week.’”
