"Off the record" nghĩa là gì?

'Off the record' có từ record là sổ sách ghi chép các sự kiện, hay là hồ sơ. Vì thế 'off the record' nghĩa là không được công bố hay ghi chép công khai. Off the record còn được dùng như một tĩnh từ, và được đặt trước một danh từ, chẳn hạn như off-the-record remarks, là những tuyên bố được giữ kín, hay off-the-record information, là những thông tin được giữ kín.

Ví dụ
The city treasurer (thủ quỹ) mentioned (đề cập) to a newspaper reporter that she doesn’t trust (tin tưởng) the mayor. Since she offered her opinion off the record, you won’t read it in the paper. It was made in strict (chặt chẽ) confidence (kín đáo).

The movie director (nhà đạo diễn phim) should have kept his mouth shut at last night’s party. When he joked (nói đùa) to a TV reporter that the studio president was cheap, he thought it was off the record. What a shock (kinh ngạc) when he heard his comment (lời phát biểu) repeated on the air!

Many of us with desk jobs know Google chat's "off the record" function all too well. When a conversation about the boss' weird (kỳ quặc) new haircut gets a little too controversial (gây tranh cãi), we switch it on, assuming nothing will be remembered by the Internet powers that be. But is it really the great secret-keeper we all assume (giả sử đúng) it to be? Does "off the record" really mean off the record?

“President Obama owes Prime Minister Netanyahu an apology,” Greta Van Susteren said in her “Off the Record” remarks this evening. The Atlantic reported that White House staffers called the Israeli prime minister a coward and "chickensh-t." White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest did not apologize for the insult (lăng mạ), instead saying that the remarks don’t reflect the views of the president.
