'Too big for one's boots/shoes/trousers/breeches' có từ boot là giày ống, nêu ai đó 'too big for his boots' nghĩa là họ quá tự tin, tự phụ tự mãn; làm bộ làm tịch (behaves as if they are more important or more clever than they really are).

Ví dụ
Busuttil’s stand is the perfect way to deal with a scheming (có mưu đồ) bully, clearly too big for his boots. If the Prime Minister won’t take the decision to sack (sa thải) a failing (khuyết điểm) minister, then Busuttil should not volunteer to do the dirty work for him.

No matter how good the player is, and in Keane’s case Ferguson admits he was moulded (đúc) in his own image, once he began to feel he was bigger than the manager it was a case of – you take the high road off to Celtic and I’ll take the low road and reassert (xác nhận lại) my authority (thẩm quyền) at Manchester United. This follows a familiar pattern: David Beckham got too big for his boots, got a boot in the face for his troubles and he decamped (tẩu thoát, chuồn) to Real Madrid.

The company, and Mr Cavatorta, are not prepared to elaborate (dựng lên) on the reasons behind this second abrupt departure. However, at the very least, it must silence the apologists (người biện hộ) who argued that Mr Guerra’s departure was a positive development for the company and due, at least in part, to him having grown too big for his boots.
