As first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Biden and other dignitaries looked on, Obama traced Pinckney's life— only 41 years long — as a man of the cloth and a state senator, lauding him as a "good man" who was "slain in his sanctuary."

Faced with a punitive, confiscating, murdering king, who's losing territory hand over fist, what is one to do? Gather your fellow barons, call in the weakened, discredited monarch and get a man of the cloth to preside while you thrash out a peace treaty. And so they did at Runnymede in the year 1215 in a bid to end the Civil War that had been tearing the place apart under King John, incidentally a man so awful that no king since has had that name.

In feudal systems, authority was personal; governance reflected (phản ánh) the ruler’s will (ý chí) but was also circumscribed (giới hạn, hạn chế) by tradition, limiting the resources available for a country’s national or international actions. France’s chief minister from 1624 to 1642, Armand-Jean du Plessis, Cardinal de Richelieu, was the first statesman (chính khách) to overcome these limitations. A man of the cloth steeped in court intrigue (vận động ngầm), Richelieu was well adapted to a period of religious upheaval (biến động) and crumbling (vỡ vụn, đổ nát) established structures.
