"A wet blanket" nghĩa là gì?

'A wet blanket' có một từ mới là blanket, nghĩa là cái chăn, cái mền. Ngày xưa, khi có đám cháy, người ta thường dùng chăn mền ướt để dập tắt ngọn lửa. Ngày nay a wet blanket dùng để chỉ một người phá hoại niềm vui của người khác vì anh ta âu sầu hay bi quan.
Ví dụ
My friend Jim wanted to do something completely different, so he invited a group of us to go skydiving (nhảy dù từ máy bay xuống đất)! Although it sounded scary (đáng sợ) to me, I didn’t want to ruin everyone’s good time (làm mọi người mất vui), so I went along. It turned out to be a lot of fun. I’m sure glad I wasn’t a wet blanket after all.
My husband has taken an executive (quản trị) position with a noodle (mì sợi) company. He doesn’t know much about noodles. That’s one of the reasons he wants me to go on this retreat (nơi tĩnh dưỡng) with the other execs and their spouses, so he can learn more about the industry. I didn’t want to be a wet blanket so I went along with him.
