"Tar and feather" nghĩa là gì?

Từ tar có nghĩa là hắc ín hoặc là chất nhựa từ thực vật; động từ to tar nghĩa là bôi trét chất nhựa này. Tương tự, từ feather có danh từ mang nghĩa ‘lông chim’ và động từ là ‘gắn lông.’ Thành ngữ 'tar and feather' (shared via VOA), khởi nguồn từ thế kỷ thứ 12 ở châu Âu, là một hình phạt người có tội bằng cách bôi hắc ín rồi trét lông gà lên người đó. Bây giờ thành ngữ này chỉ có nghĩa là chỉ trích hay phạt nặng.
