"On the sidelines" nghĩa là gì?

Sidelines là những lằn vạch ở hai bên một sân đấu bóng, ấn định khu vực ngoài khu vực thi dấu, dành cho khán giả ngồi xem. Vì thế, 'on the sidelines' có nghĩa là ở ngoài lề để quan sát chứ không tham gia vào một trận đấu hay một câu chuyện.
Ví dụ
“The owner of our newspaper said he may have to end production because of the tough economy and decreasing readership. That caused lots of us readers to form a coalition. Our goal is to persuade management that the publication can and should be saved. We realize how critical it is to get involved right now and not sit on the sidelines (không thể ngồi bên lề được).”
