Trong thành ngữ này, động từ to push có nghĩa là xô, đẩy và to shove có nghĩa là đẩy một cách mạnh bạo. Thành ngữ 'when push comes to shove' được dùng để chỉ một tình hình gay go, không còn lựa chọn nào khác, buộc mình phải hành động.

“Normally I work out every day, but I often have to travel out of town for work and don’t have access to a gym. So I run up and down the stairs at the hotel where I stay and use the room’s furniture for doing sit-ups. When push comes to shove (khi kẹt lắm), I always find ways to exercise.”
