"His name is mud" nghĩa là gì?

Mud có nghĩa là bùn. Nghĩa đen của thành ngữ này có nghĩa là tên một người nào đó là bùn, và nghĩa bóng là một người nào đó bị mất danh tiếng hay bị hổ thẹn, bị mất uy tín.
Ví dụ
“I really admired the charity work of my neighbor. For years, he had raised lots of money to help provide food and shelter for homeless people in the community. But now an investigation (điều tra) has found him guilty of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from donors. These days his name is mud (mất hết uy tín). He should go to jail (phải bị bỏ tù)!”
“My kids have been asking again when we’re going to Disneyland. I realize I did promise them last summer that I’d take them. I’d better start making plans. If they don’t get to go, my name will be mud. I just can’t disappoint them.”
