"Bread and Butter" nghĩa là gì?

'Bread and Butter' có một từ mới là butter nghĩa là bơ. Bánh mì phết bơ là loại thức ăn chính của người phương Tây, cũng giống như cơm của người Á châu vậy. Vì thế, bread and butter là công việc thiết yếu để làm kế sinh nhai của một người. Cụm từ này còn có nghĩa là phần cơ bản nhất của một công việc, một nghề, hay một tình thế.
Ví dụ
When I saw my neighbor’s artwork (tác phẩm nghệ thuật) at a gallery (phòng triển lãm), I was amazed by his talent. I assumed (cho rằng) that painting was his bread and butter (kế sinh nhai). But he told me that it’s only a hobby (sở thích riêng), he couldn’t live on the money he makes from the paintings he sells.
After poor sales (không bán được nhiều) of our economy cars (xe tiết kiệm, tức loại xe rẻ tiền), our company decided to focus (chú trọng) once again on producing luxury (sang trọng) vehicles. After all, it’s those models that have always been the foundation (nền tảng) of our business. They’re our bread and butter (phần cơ bản nhất).
