'Grit one’s teeth' có một từ mới là teeth, số ít là tooth, nghĩa là cái răng. Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là nghiến răng chịu đựng một tình thế khó khăn.

Ví dụ
Maggie was running well in the marathon when she stripped and sprained (bong gân) her ankle (mắt cá chân). The pain was intense and she had a long way to go. Many people would have quit. But Maggie decided she was going to continue. So she gritted her teeth (nghiến răng chịu đựng) and made it to the finish line (đích cuộc đua).

I interviewed a group of soldiers years ago who had become paraplegic (bị liệt) after land mine accidents. How many of us might have retreated from society? Yet each of them found inner strength to move forward in their lives. Despite many challenges, they gritted their teeth. And they found ways to help other wounded soldiers undergoing physical therapy.
