"To the letter" nghĩa là gì?

'To the letter' có một từ mới là letter nghĩa là chữ. Vì thế 'to the letter' (tới từng chữ) có nghĩa là chú ý chặt chẽ đến từng chi tiết, hay triệt để thi hành một mệnh lệnh.
Ví dụ
Here’s how to get to my house, but be careful! It’s rather confusing (khá rắc rối) because you have to make a lot of turns (rẽ nhiều lần). You could easily get lost (đi lạc) if you don’t follow my directions to the letter. So please drive exactly as I have indicated.
When my grandmother prepares her homemade (làm tại nhà) pasta (món mì làm bằng bột và trứng) dishes, she does it from memory (trí nhớ). Her cooking is guided by tasting (nếm) and smelling, not by adding exactly certain ingredients (thành phần món ăn). She simply doesn’t believe in following recipes to the letter.
