'Cut the mustard' (shared via VOA) có từ mustard là cây hay hạt mù tạc, và động từ to cut là cắt bớt, hay trong trường hợp này là dùng giấm để làm giảm bớt vị cay của hạt mù tạc khiến cho loại gia vị này trở nên ngon và đậm đà. Vì thế, 'cut the mustard' có nghĩa là có đủ khả năng để làm một điều gì.
