"Go off the deep end" nghĩa là gì?

'Go off the deep end' có động từ go off là bất ngờ rơi vào một chỗ nào, và deep end là phần sâu của một hồ bơi. Vì thế, thành ngữ này dùng để chỉ một hành động phi lý, vô trách nhiệm hay rối loạn, y như khi người ta bị rơi vào chỗ nước sâu trong hồ bơi vậy.

Ví dụ
How is Ann ever going to save any money (để dành tiền)? Just last week, she went off the deep end (hành động hết sức phi lý) and spent $500 on new shoes! She should be more responsible (nên tỏ ra có trách nhiệm hơn) than that!

When it comes to women Jim tends to be rather reckless (khá liều lĩnh). Can you believe he’s fallen in love with our boss? I think she’s beautiful too, but I’m not about to go off the deep end and propose (ngỏ lời cầu hôn).

The idea isn’t for Muslims to spy on one another or choose between their religion and their country. The vast majority are horrified (kinh khiếp) by Islamic State violence and, we suspect, would gladly work to prevent its spread (truyền bá) in North America. If they recognize radicals in their midst who are distorting (xuyên tạc) Islamic ideals, now’s the time to alert authorities — before they go off the deep end.

For years, customers have been treated more like ticket numbers than human beings. As automation has taken over, a very vital step in the customer service process has been lost. The human touch. Call center industry advisor Gail Goodman explains, “It’s that kind of stiff (cứng nhắc, không tự nhiên), robotic, ‘I have been told to say this and I’m going to say it’ behavior that just makes the angry, unsatisfied or frustrated (nản lòng) customer go off the deep end.”
