'When in Rome do as the Romans do' có từ Rome là thành phố La mã, và Romans là người sống trong thành phố đó. When in Rome, do as the Romans do có nghĩa là khi sống ở La mã thì cũng hành động như người La mã, tức là nhập gia tùy tục. Thành ngữ này xuất hiện từ năm 1530 khi một tu sĩ từ thành phố Milan đến thăm một tu sĩ khác ở La mã, và hỏi ông ở La mã là có nên ăn chay vào ngày thứ bảy hay không vì phong tục này khác với phong tục của ông ở Milan.
