Sinh viên không trả nợ đúng hạn có bị phạt?

Khi phát biểu tại lễ tốt nghiệp của đại học Morehouse College, tỷ phú Robert F. Smith bất ngờ tuyên bố gia đình ông sẽ trả hết nợ của tất cả các sinh viên tốt nghiệp năm nay.
Tổng cộng số nợ hiện còn của 396 sinh viên là khoảng 40 triệu đô.
Nhiều sinh viên cảm kích trước nghĩa cử của ông, và nói họ sẽ "pay it forward", tức là về sau sẽ giúp người khác.
Smith, một kỹ sư hóa, là sáng lập viên hãng đầu tư Vista Equity Partners, và theo Forbes, ông có tài sản ròng khoảng 5 tỷ đô, là người da đen giàu nhất ở Mỹ.

Morehouse College seniors (sinh viên năm cuối) got a surprise Sunday when billionaire investor (nhà đầu tư tỷ phú) Robert F. Smith announced during his commencement speech (bài phát biểu lễ trao bằng tốt nghiệp) that he would pay off the student loan debt (món nợ sinh viên) for the historically black college's graduating class.
"On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we're going to put a little fuel (một chút xăng) in your bus (đi xe buýt hằng ngày)," he told the newly minted (mới ra lò) graduates in Atlanta before saying his family was creating a grant to eliminate (xóa sạch) their student loans.
The announcement was met with a standing ovation (sự hoan hô, tung hô) and chants (hô khẩu hiệu, ngợi ca) of "MVP!"
...The exact amount to be covered for the 396 students is still being calculated, school President David Thomas told CNN on Monday, but the sum will likely be in the tens of millions of dollars. Thomas called Smith's gesture (hành động) "a liberation gift (món quà giải phóng)."
"When you have to service (trả nợ) debt, the choices about what you can go do in the world are constrained (bị hạn chế, bó hẹp)," he said. "(Smith's gift) gives them the liberty to follow their dreams (giấc mơ), their passions (đam mê)."
