"All cats are grey in the dark/ in the night" hoặc "at night all cats are gray" = Khi trời tối thì con mèo nào cũng màu xám. Cụm từ này có nghĩa không quan trọng ngoại hình hay sự khác biệt của ai với ai. Tương tự tục ngữ Việt Nam có câu "tắt đèn nhà ngói cũng như nhà tranh".

Ví dụ
A: "I can't believe you're going on a date with someone you've never met before! What if you don't think he's attractive?"
B: "Ah, all cats are gray in the dark, so it will be fine."

Alcorn has had the picture in his classroom for years with the quote “In the dark, all cats are grey.” It’s paraphrasing (diễn giải) a Benjamin Franklin letter from 1745, advising a young man to choose an older woman as his companion (bạn đồng hành).

Rod-related (tế bào cảm quang hình que) loss of acuity (thị lực) is why, at night, something moving in the distance may look like an animal. But as you get closer, it might really be a paper bag. Also, because rods are only responsive to the blue end of the spectrum (quang phổ), they are blind to red light and are also colorblind. Hence, the saying “at night, all cats are grey.”
